Auburn University Theatre Banner Causing Controversy

One word is turning a lot of heads and drawing much controversy. "I think it is dramatic," says Joseph Ansell, Interim Dean for Auburn University's Department of Liberal Arts.

The theatre department is promoting "The best little whorehouse in Texas" by hanging a banner on the theatre. It reads "Whorehouse coming fall 2005." Ansell says, "Given where we are and the fact there is a lack of support for the arts in the region and certainly on this campus, getting people to pay attention is important."

People are paying attention, but it's not flying over well with some. "Ii am not real thrilled with the sign," says Paul Przyborski's.

Przyborski's grandson is one of hundreds of high school students attending camp at Auburn. Whorehouse is not a word he's ready two define for his grandson. He says, "At some time in his life he will need to be exposed to it, but it is not something you would expect to find on a sunny summer afternoon here at Auburn University."

The Theatre Department says the sign is staying put. It adds the sign doing exactly what the Theatre Department wanted it to, getting attention. "It's not a curse word, it's not insulting a specific individual," says Ansell.

Auburn University Theatre's production of the Tony Award winning play starts September 27.

There is definitely no hoe for grandpa ... and if the fucking kid doesn't know what a whorehouse is by now, there's no hope for him either.

PD if some liberal like you wanted to teach your young children what a ho is, and what a butt plug is, and the subtleties of anal sex - I am sure you would be the first to fight for his "Constitutional" right to do that.

Why not allow some parent to do the opposite??

How do you leap from the use of the word "whorehouse" on a sign at a college theater to butt plugs and anal sex?

When did a high school student become a young child?

I fail to see where I suggested that the grandpa in question doesn't have the right to raise his kid/grandkid as he sees fit.

Grandpa should probably have arranged for his grandkid to tour Bob Jones U, Liberty University or Oral Roberts, however.

I think Grandpa is really over reacting. I was in high school when Best Little Whorehouse was produced on Broadway, it was a huge hit and then it became a "G" rated movie starring Dolly Parton. It was always referred to as just Whorehouse. It's the title of the play, it's just a word. And I'm sure anyone in high school has heard the word before, if he hasn't, it's time to grow up.

the point is if the parent want to do the oposite then he should do it at his house not go around pulling down signs he does not agree to.

if he wants to blind fold his son by all means let him do it but why mess with other peoples way of thinking and try to take down something just because he doesn't agree?
