Marriott Hotels to Ban Porn

...Marriott Hotels has banned smoking from their rooms -- now Concerned Women for America is wondering when the chain is going to ban another health hazard: pay-per-view pornography. "We've been after Marriott for years to stop providing pay-per-view porn," says Jan LaRue, CWA's chief counsel. "But their excuse is that 'some' customers want it." LaRue figures that percentage of customers is relatively small -- say, five percent. "If it's only about five percent, they've lost that excuse," she maintains. "I'm guessing that their cut from porn is a lot bigger than their cut from cigarette machines in the lobby." In its announcement, Marriott cited that the demand for non-smoking rooms "continues to rise with new information from the Surgeon General on the hazards of secondary smoke." LaRue wonders why the worldwide hotelier is listening only the report about health hazards related to smoking. "What about former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop's report on the dangerous consequences of viewing pornography?" she asks. "What about the mental and psychological health consequences related to dependency on porn?" LaRue suggests that Marriott eliminate pornography as an amenity, thereby creating what she describes as a "truly safe and wholesome environment" -- and likely seeing a boost in sales as a result.

That's so ridiculous. Smoking in the rooms, I can understand. This is PAY PER VIEW right? Which means it isn't running continueously or anything...it's just there for those who want to watch. It's not forced upon anyone of course...She's just got a stick up her butt.

The funny part is that she's arguing that watching porn is bad for your mental health but the one argument that I might agree with, she doesn't bring up. As a parent, the one point that could possibly make me think about supporting this is the fact that if my kids were in the room and my wife was out and I was in the shower, or whatever, they could access the porn channel with no problem. It would seem appropriate to me to require the guest to request that the porn channel be activated in their room at the time of check in and then be allowed to pick a password that would need to be keyed in from the room somehow.

This is bad for the rest of the biz. Having the larger companies promote porn is a good thing. If the rest of the hotels do the same thing, expect congress to start getting antsy about coming after the biz when they no longer have deep pocketed lobbyist to worry about.

organizations protest porn in hotels, supermarkets, on tv....etc, on a daily basis

porn ain't going no where, it makes hotels millions of dollars every year in revenue, and considering comcast and disney are both some of the largest distributors of porn in the world, I doubt we will see much "banning" of porn

Actually Hammer, It is the opposite - for a fee, you can have it blocked at most hotels. $3.50 is the last price I heard about.
