Hmm...lets see...

could be a driver problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;275678

es198xdl.sys is identified as the module and from what I can find, that is a Directsound driver.

Boot up in safe mode (hit [F8] as the computer starts up to get to a menu that will allow you to select safe mode.

Go to your sound devices and reinstall the drivers.

Then try to boot up. If problem still persists, open box, remove sound card.

And if that doesn't work, get a bigger hammer.

Does this article sound like your issue?

Quote:
SYMPTOMS
When you restart your computer, you may receive the following error message:

STOP 0x0000001e KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED in win32k.sys

or

STOP 0xC000021A {Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process terminated unexpectedly.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you downloaded the Backdoor.NTHack virus from a remote host into your computer. This virus is initiated by the Dl.bat file in the InetPub\Scripts folder.

As a result, both the Firedaemon.exe and Sud.exe files are installed on the computer as well as the Os2srv.exe and Mmtask.exe files, which along with the Sud.exe and Index.exe files are run as services.

No, but it does matter that you're running Windows 2000 instead of XP. With XP, you always have the option of doing a system restore, which lets you take the computer back to the state it was in before the problem occured....you just select a date before you had the problem.

Windows 2000 has something similar, it's called "last known good configuration" unfortunately it only saves one point. So if you've installed anything else since the point it was hosed, you're probably screwed. But it's worth a shot.

Hit F8 while it's booting to get the manual startup screen and select "last known good configuration" and cross your fingers.
