I never paid much attention to this song but since Ive learned to play poker the "who wants to play those 8s and Aces" caught my attention....I just dont get the rest of the song........I know there are music junkies here, anyone know the story behind the song?

Fire Lake
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band
-from the album "Against The Wind"

Who's gonna ride that chrome three wheeler
Who's gonna make that first mistake
Who wants to wear those gypsy leathers
All the way to Fire Lake

Who wants to break the news about Uncle Joe
You remember Uncle Joe
He was the one afraid to cut the cake
Who wants to tell poor Aunt Sarah
Joe's run off to Fire Lake
Joe's run off to Fire Lake

Who wants to brave those bronze beauties
Lying in the sun
With their long soft hair falling
Flying as they run
Oh they smile so shy
And they flirt so well
And they lay you down so fast
Till you look straight up and say
Oh Lord
Am I really here at last

Who wants to play those eights and aces
Who wants a raise
Who needs a stake
Who wants to take that long shot gamble
And head out to Fire Lake
Head out
Who wants to go to Fire Lake
And head out
Who wants to go to Fire Lake
Head out
Out to Fire Lake
Who's gonna do it

Meatpuppets, lake of fire

Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don’t go to heaven where the angels fly
They go down to the lake of fire and fry
Won’t see them again till the fourth of july
I knew a lady who came from duluth
She got bit by a dog with a rabid tooth
She went to her grave just a little too soon
And she flew away howling on the yellow moon
Now the people cry and the people moan
And they look for a dry place to call their home
And try to find some place to rest their bones
While the angels and the devils
Fight to claim them for their own

Much better song.

Its about dying man.

Its about death and hell.

Eights and Aces is the Dead Man's hand... to raise the stakes against death in a poker game.

Interesting this recurrence of 8s and As in cards, they are supposed to be the sure split hands in blackjack. But perhaps not always, don't believe the little cards the casinos sell lol...

The Aces and Eights myth is old and deep, and refers to a poker hand instead of black jack though.

Its the hand Wild Bill was supposedly holding when he died.

'When Wild Bill Hickok fell down dead on the floor, he had in his hand five cards, the cards that became known as a "dead mans hand" (a two-pair of aces and eigths).'

Hence the name.

The song is clearly about gay men and the risk of AIDS.

Who's gonna ride that chrome three wheeler
Who's gonna make that first mistake
Who wants to wear those gypsy leathers
All the way to Fire Lake

Gay leather men on the way to Fire Island.

Who wants to break the news about Uncle Joe
You remember Uncle Joe
He was the one afraid to cut the cake
Who wants to tell poor Aunt Sarah
Joe's run off to Fire Lake
Joe's run off to Fire Lake

Uncle Joe was afraid to cut the cake because he is gay. Who's going to tell Aunt Sarah that her husband is gay.

Who wants to brave those bronze beauties
Lying in the sun
With their long soft hair falling
Flying as they run
Oh they smile so shy
And they flirt so well
And they lay you down so fast
Till you look straight up and say
Oh Lord
Am I really here at last

Talking about the promiscious gay men at Fire Island.

Who wants to play those eights and aces
Who wants a raise
Who needs a stake
Who wants to take that long shot gamble
And head out to Fire Lake
Head out
Who wants to go to Fire Lake
And head out
Who wants to go to Fire Lake
Head out
Out to Fire Lake
Who's gonna do it

Who wants to risk having gay sex and possibly die from AIDS.

Kimmy,

This is from the Gambling Master's website himself... The "Wizard of Odds"..

http://www.wizardofodds.com/games/blackjack/

The Basic Strategy
The most important thing to know about blackjack is the basic strategy. This strategy is simply the best way to play every possible situation, without any knowledge of the distribution of the rest of the cards in the deck. Following is the basic strategy for four of more decks when the dealer stands on soft 17. Links are also provided to more basic strategy charts for other rules. However the most common game is the multiple deck game (4 or more decks) where the dealer stands on soft 17. If you only memorize one table I would suggest the one below. It can be played effectively under any rules.

Here's the Blackjack House Edge calculator:

http://www.wizardofodds.com/games/blackjac...seedgecalc.html

I don't think there are any rule scenarios where not splitting aces is correct!!

Haha..

Maybe if you're counting cards and you have a really lean shoe remaining... Even then, you should still probably split aces catch one ten and take a push.

Don't forget to memorize the Surrender tables....

http://www.wizardofodds.com/games/blackjac...ack/bjapx6.html

The only time you don't split 8's is when there is no Double After Split allowed and the dealer is showing an ace. You Surrender.

Aces and 8's....Hehehe.. I was watching a table once where a guy was playing $5000 per hand on three hands and had a whole messload of splits and double downs and had nothing but 19's and 20's on every hand and had $55 grand out on the table and the dealer drew a 7 card 21!!

Too damn funny!! :P

The chances of winning splitting aces into a ten is 9-5 against. Don't make me do the math
The chances of winning BOTH might be 9 to 5 against.. However, Basic Strategy says ALWAYS split aces.. How can you argue with Basic Strategy??

Can you reference at least one expert that suggests not splitting aces? Get the math books out, cuz I don't buy it!!
