The Internet is beginning to feel like shopping in one of those funny smelling dollar stores. Every spam email and pop up ad I get is for the cheesiest crap - mini race cars, knife sets, surveillance cameras - i'm fucking waiting for the sea monkeys and the x-ray glasses.

it's just really tacky. i don't think when Douglas Copeland coined the term 'cyberspace' he had a digital flea market in mind.

I keep spammed for the mini-rc cars and they claim "very rare" yet I can find them at WalGreens for like $12....hmmm, maybe I can buy a bunch from WalGreens and re-sells them suckers on EBay who think these will be impossible to find for Xmas........

Disappointing - definitely

With the opportunity to accelerate the information age the path of least resistance and it's close cousin the lowest common denominator rear their ugly heads

The irony being that most (early) internet users are educated and have above average incomes

Is the flea market appearance and attitude due to the low barrier to entry for businesses or does Ebay (yes you too can buy everyone's junk - welcome to the world's largest garage sale) and a sluggish American economy contribute? All the above and some other?

Tacky should be John Waters, Pink Flamingos and Black Velvet Elvis - not the internet

I too get 3+ spams a day for mini race cars - now if I can only get a good deal on Thomas the Tank engine stuff

My wife waited for the grand opening of the nnew 99 Cent Megastore (yes, we're super cheap motherfuckers, my relatives still insist on celebrating Christmas, fuck them, they get a ceramic bordhouse from the 99 Cent Store). Although she did get an awesome Razor Scooter for 99 Cents (grand opening promotion). She was joking with the checkstand clerk about "so, when are you guys going to be on the internet?" and the clerk actually said "according to our store manager, we're going to have an internet website in January".


You think the Internet is tacky now? Just wait until shoppers can go online and buy a whole lot of crap for 99 cents....

In all fairness, I use the internet almost exclusively these days for information, shopping, work , etc.

I read the Atlanta paper and the small local paper online. I read Boortz since I can't get his radio show, when I have a question regarding laws, medical information, and such, I go to the internet.

Like the past few years, I'll do almost all my Christmas shopping online. I buy things throughout the year also. I haven't been inside a mall in years! I needed a new copy of Quicken recently (1999 didn't like XP ) and in 10 minutes, I had a new copy. Without even having to brush my hair! I do hours of research on cars before I buy them, including seeing dealer inventory and getting online quotes - saves a ton of time at the dealership! And I find out information about my migraines before my doctor does.

My kid has done every college registration online, as well as taken summer courses over the internet. His HS had grades and teacher comments online. Right now I'm taking a RE class over the internet.

Not to mention I'd be working in some crappy office wearing a dress suit and wearing panty hose instead of sitting here in a T-shirt and sweatpants if there were no internet

Do I have to put up with some crappy pop up ads and spam in order to get all this? Sure! But IMHO, for me, it's MORE than worth it - something's gotta pay for all the free crap I get, hehehe.
