He wrote an editorial in the Times about it 2 days ago, I read a longer story about how Gates had gotten into the philanthropy business. Apparently he had been reading about starvation in Africa and he asked his father-in-law 'this stuff really happens?' or some such, then he started the foundation with his pop as one of the directors.
They've given billions in 'investments' to starving countries, in the form of returns-based money. Some people view it as a little harsh but why shouldn't charities be run by paying for productivity. Right on, Bill! C. |

I'm not anti-MS other than being critical of their hurried releases and general incompetency in planning OS releases. But I think Bill has done an amazing job with his foundation; his wife deserves a lot of the credit as well. Even if he got into charity a little late and for a weird reason (that one day he was reading about all the starving poor and said 'hey maybe I can help!') he's on the right track.
