I hope its in a frame!! LOL

Colin, people definately backdate when they started ... it seems to be almost standard to put 'online since 1997' on a site, almost as important as '100 000 pics, 10 000 videos, 50 000 stories'

I started in April 1998, a month after my 21st b'day. The first person I spoke to in the industry was Todd (STK). Launched purve in July 98 and went to my first show in Jan 1999 at the monte carlo. I met Serge & Em, Webfather and Terry & his wife Sarah from Tropixxx hosting in New York before the show and KK once I arrived at the show.

I missed most of the big bucks because I was too busy enjoying myself, but got one hell of an education!!!

LOL, I did start my nonadult ventures in 97, but it was 99 before I found my way to the dark side. If there was anything internet related I could do over, it would have to be skipping the non-adult stuff entirely, it was way too far ahead of its time. People just weren't going to pay 3k for a sofa they saw on a dial up connection...

I got pretty lucky when I started in adult, between Nick and Tommy yelling at me with their funny accents all the time about how bad my sites were, how pretty they were, how they made the surfer want to stay instead of clicking on a sponsor link, how I was never going to make it in this business, you name it... it really taught me that it takes a tough skin to manage with this crowd.

i think that timetables get messed up. people correlate webmaster boards with the industry.. which is n ot one to one, so we end up with mismatched dates.

I registered my first adult domain, whosyourdaddy.com, in march of 1996. i lost that one when i accidently let it expire (irony there is palpable). But before that i had dabbled in adult through other hosting companies, using subdomains, and ~ acounts.

previously, i had dealt in online tgraffic only in mainstream, through the commonwealth network, and did HTML work and Design on the side, as well as scripting. This is while i was in college, so id place my first income solely from the internet at somewhere around the beginning of 1995, meaning that i have passed 10 years and now feel terribly old

I wrote a piece of Hit Bot code in 1999 as a proof of concept. I saw people releasing them, and all they did was directly get a URL and sent no headers etc. Very easy to detect.

The one i made sent full HTTP headers, with referrer and useragent, and also grabbed images that were on the page etc, to make the server logs look real

It was very basic and shitty, and just really designed to make people think more and be more inventive with stuff they coded like that.

A friend of mine put it on his webpage for download, and it ended up on big security portal/tool sites. A guy in Oz found it and sent me a mail asking if i'd like to work on some porn projects with him.

It's still online at its original home aswell http://www.ccitt5.net/archives/gma-click.c.gz

Quote:
/*
** gma-click.c -- Standard 'click' version -- By GMA -- c5.hakker.com
**
** This program doesn't really do anything special. I just saw certain
** 'pr0n clickers' out there and thought they could be improved in a
** couple of ways, so put this together.
**
** 1) Delay for a random period.
** 2) Connect to web server through wingate.
** 3) Provide the web server with various headers from the alleged
** client including random "User-Agent" values and "Referer" values.
** 4) Download relevant images aswell as html to make the connection
** look legit.
**
** Before you run this you have to add lines like the one on line 104 for
** each piece of html/gif/jpeg you want to download. Read the code and
** figure it all out, then change what you want changing.
**
** (NB: Use only hostnames in the wingate file.)
*/
I didn't use it for any sneaky purposes!

we were doing clipart sites.. averaging 150-200 page views per visitor at times. commonwealth's only problem is they paid 90 days after cycle.

Hey Ant -

We were newbies together on CONDOM so I can definitely vouch for you NOT back-dating. lol Before I found CONDOM I too tried joining YNOT (like Nick) but was told that I was "too much of a newbie" and wasn't allowed in. So I fiddled around with free sites for awhile until I met this guy named Jimmer who told me I could learn to make more $$$ at this place called CONDOM. I took a peek, but never posted. Then the owner of the freehost that all my sites were on (yes, I was a free host warrior until '99 even - lol) sent out an email about CONDOM as well. I figured I'd better give it a try.

The first show I attended was the Miami ia2000 (Nick made me go - thanks Nick! ) and that's where I met most of the people I still work with today. I wish I would have attended the ladies' luncheon, but I had been mis-informed... someone told me it was a male-bashing feminist group (yes, it was the New Jersey speedbump who told me - he started brainwashing me even back then), so I skipped it. I now read on Oprano every now and again that women I *wish* I had known longer were in attendance. Pisses me off at that missed opportunity to have met them YEARS earlier.

But to answer your question - YES.. people DO backdate when they started. I was shocked at how many people are now jumping on the pre-2k webmaster thing (Gonzo, didn't you start that one?) trying to say they started in the 90's... when I know damned well that they didn't. I'm not THAT old and my memory's not THAT bad... there's working under the radar and then there's just not being there at all. lol

In the beginning R-n created the telephone lines and the Internet. 2 And the internet was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of AOL. And the Spirit of R-n moved upon the net. 3 And R-n said, Let there be CE: and there was CE. 4 And R-n saw the hits, and saw that it was good: and R-n divided Netpond from ANS. 5 And R-n called the light Fast Cash, and the darkness he called Xpics.

ahahahhahahhahahahahahahahhahaha

BTW... February 1996... started on 128K pipe from a Internet Cafe
Got listed on PK 5 days after I started, and immediately got 2-3K a day.
Cafe kicked me off their system when their own homepage would take
30 mins to load...

Went to the second largest ISP in Buffalo, and immediately accounted
for 10% of their total bandwidth... They would quietly show my site
to corporate clients, who refused to believe it was possible to push
1.5 Gigs a day...

You can't really trust the waybackmachine nor whois as to when someone started in this business. The waybackmachine has me starting in December of 96. Whois shows my first domain in July of 96. But, I actually had JamesandVictoria up on my isp account in February of 96. I suppose if you started after that, the waybackmachine would be kind of accurate.

I have an easy way of knowing when I started. I left the Air Force the first week ok November '96 and had my first site up the same week. Hit the jackpot with Yahoo on day 2 and had my first $10k check within 2 weeks of leaving the Military. Damn I rode that Yahoo listing like a sloppy slut.

MissEve - Remember when you, KC, and I got the C&D for selling the Pam & Tommy videos sometime in early '98. I know I changed my drawers that day.

Vick, I remember meeting you in Vegas in jan '98 along with Claudia. Was dealing with Tad a lot back then.

Grimm - Xpics was so bad about overpaying. I had someone call me up one day wanting to prepay $20k for a couple weeks traffic. Of course I said OK. After the 2 weeks they told me the traffic hadn't performed as well as they had expected and they didn't want to renew the deal. A few hours later a different Xpics rep called me saying they had just found my site and wanted to pay $25k for 2 weeks. Gotta love sales reps

Anyone remember the hotteen.com project? A dozen or so webmasters joined together and used the site to mix and grow traffic. Was a very successful project. Back when the TTS toplist script was king. Before TTS I used a script that Tom at BlueGravity built. Was better than using MKstats like I did for the first few months. Running a toplist by hand sucked but made a ton of $ until I found a way to automate it. Getting a script to run my toplists was like living in the dark all your life and someone flipping a lite on one day. Damn, that was a long time ago.

Damn, I was a real idiot back in the good old days...

I bought my first domain on March 17, 1997. I didn't even know how to copy and paste, so my first sponsor (Websplash at 1 cent per click) took me about two hours to write down and add to my site with notepad. hahaha

With that in mind, I had a friend who had a site listed on Persian Kitty. He was making $1500 a month, and since that was what I took home from the cabinet shop I thought that would be great. I tried for nine months to get listed on Persian Kitty, then when I finally did I put up so many banners I got kicked off.

Someone told me about YNOT, so I went there and read these crazy arguments between two guys. Serge and Viper. I wasn't going to waste my time watching them argue, so I went and started trading links with people. Who knew that was the golden age of YNOT... My site had NO stats, so I had no idea where my traffic came from, and thus I no idea how to get traffic. I am the Rocky Balboa of webmasters though, and knew their had to be a major piece of the puzzle I was missing... (can you say, understatement? LOL)

At one point, Snoops and 12 clicks took pity on me and explained to me what this game was really about. A few Yahoo listings later and I was making more than I ever dreamed possible for doing so little.

Later on down the road I met Sweet T and he offered me a job. I kept my sites going on the side, knowing that "this could never last," and moved to Atlanta. I've been here ever since.

The sites are just about dead now, but things have always been good with NatNet. I've learned a lot and had a great time... oh, and I didn't blow any of that Yahoo cash, except some on my yard. LOLOL

Hit it right on the head, what the hell did they care, they were getting 50 dollars a signup with a year retention because nobody could cancel! I almost felt sorry enough to call them up and say, umm... your last check isnt used up, then i surfed the sites and said "fuck it" LOL.
