The announcement of the "new Bond" caused a certain difficulty in my house. My husband was a fan of the books. He still has the paperbacks, lovingly preserved, "grab in case of fire" stuff. (President Kennedy was a fan, thus ensuring Fleming's US sales.) Sean Connery was James Bond. In his movies, he did "spy stuff."

Roger Moore was never James Bond. Moore, who so rocked in "The Saint," was a walking excuse for outlandish plots, special effects and storylines that stretched crediblity until it was way past the snapping point.

George Lazenby, in his one appearance, was decent. He got to marry the gorgeous Diana Rigg, the late Mrs. Bond.

I liked Timothy Dalton a lot, because he did look like he'd kill a person and enjoy doing so.

I didn't like Pierce Brosnon. The PC people had hit the scripts; he always looked like a smart ass; the feel was all wrong. Many nice things can be said about Halle Berry...but I still think Ursula Andress knocks her over the left field fence.

The blonde guy? *sigh* Well, we'll end up owning his movie because my husband will want his collection to be complete...but geeze....

I've never seen David Niven as James Bond, either, but I definitely will search for it, as I can't bear an incomplete collection.

Another nearly totally forgotten James Bond was the *first* James Bond in the television production of "Casino Royale." Peter Lorre played the villian, La Sheef. Linda Christian, the very first "Bond girl" played Valerie Mathis.

(I have the VHS tape right here and unfortunately there is no date on it so I can't tell you what year the television production played, but it is safe to assume it was in the "way back.")

IMHO, Connery is number one. Brosnan is a very strong second actually. Dalton is a distant third (for the same reason mentioned, he looked like he could easily kill people).

Roger Moore totally blew chunks as Bond! He turned it into a satire. And he was well-past his prime. Moore will always be Simon Templar though.

Dravyk...if I may interrupt the Brit love fest for a moment...you're exactly correct regarding "real spies." I read a lot of spy novels. I collect the books of Jack Higgins, who is not the world's greatest writer but he's a wowzer of a story teller. I've read a great deal of Ludlum. Matt Damon, who did an excellent job in the movies, I admit, bore absolutely no resemblance to the Jason Bourne in the books, who was much older. In any good spy novel, the "hero" is totally nondescript. In bad spy novels, he's either stunningly handsome, has "piercing eyes" or some such nonsense. One of Jack Higgins' main characters is Sean Dillon, who is short, has pale blonde hair and "cold eyes," but since he's former IRA and is usually infiltrating the IRA...he actually is nondescript for the world in which he works...if you follow that.

He used anearly word processor and if you check his books you will find exact c&p descriptive paragraphs in his books.

Btw did I mention that my father was imprisioned by Col Gadhafi in 1970 for alledgedly being a spy?

My father worked for the United Nations (ILO) but had many friends at Wheelus Air Base so I guess they thought why is a labour expert at a military facility all the timne and why is he always in places where there is civil wars.

We arrived in Libya in 68 from Lagos

So who knows....lol

But he retired after his release and a stint in Geneva.

I went to Amazon.com and bought two of his latest books in hardcover rather than wait for the paperback. Luckily, in the review, a "warning shot" was fired regarding one of his main characters. I most certainly would *not* have appreciated running into that without a warning.

Yes, I'm familiar with the "cut and paste" descriptions. I reread his books constantly because I find the comfortable familiarity very soothing. Nice way to relax. I can always tell when I hit one of those "where have I read this before?" passages. I don't mind, though. Certain writers I read because they have an exquisite use of the language. Others, like Higgins, are in the "tell me a good story" category. They get much more tolerance than the first type.

My husband has already been informed that I need a new bookcase.
