Free Porn Will Destroy the Net

Jonathan Zittrain is a professor of Internet Governance and Regulation at Oxford University. He recently wrote a book called, “The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It.” The basic premise seems to be: on a long enough life span all good things are likely to get subverted in ways that leave them unusable; the internet, an accidental creation/discovery in the late 70s by a few computer nerds, is no exception.

Take spam. We all hate it. The more time passes the more sophisticated it becomes. It’s one form of internet abuse that threatens to bring down the house if its allowed to evolved unchecked.

Zittrain warns that eventually abuse of the web, including evolved spam, can reach such levels that people feel it is no longer worth the effort to go online — or if they do, it could become a musical chairs-like situation, where users habitually skip around as certain sites lose out to internet abusers.

Recently websites and blogs have begun requiring users to enter letters into a “captcha“* (see below), in an attempt to zero-out spam content in comment sections. This we know.

But did you know that spam originators — people who make it – have upped their game to where they’ve now set up websites that offer free porn to hackers who can crack captcha codes?

Not cash, porn — the new, great motivator.

Every second — second — more than 28,000 users are viewing pornographic material online. And every second — second — over $3,000 is being spent on porn.

In fact, the internet porn industry does more revenue than the big tech companies combined: Yahoo, Microsoft, Google, eBay, Netflix, Amazon, Apple and Earthlink.

Porn is the crown jewel of the internet, and though business is good there’s a problem on the horizon — one at least partially of porn’s making.
The internet is just a hodgepodge of technologies layered on top of one another in order to keep it viable for ever growing numbers of users. Since the internet was created/discovered by accident, questions of how much space there is on the world wide web have had to be continually revisited.

As the internet has grown at an astronomical rate, more technologies have needed to be developed and added in order to keep it sustainable — a hodgepodge scenario.

But there’s a problem that may leave us all in for a rude awakening much sooner than you think (less than 2 years): the internet is running out of space!

What’s killing it? We are of course, but specifically videos (and mobile technology). Videos are being uploaded so frequently and are taking up so much space that they’re threatening the overall usability of the web.

It’s kinda like an expanding waste line. It started out small but each year it gets more bloated. Till eventually it gets so big it threatens to burst wide open, killing the person. Either they can shed the fat or buy bigger clothes. But this is America so we already know what they’re gonna do: buy bigger clothes for the web.

But it’s not a done deal; unless some deep pockets invest hundreds of billions of dollars to build more capacity, entire swaths of the web could experience “brownouts” before 2010.

Young people are generally apathetic when it comes to government, but imagine the holy terror they’ll unleash when they hear the words: No more Facebook. They’ll raise arms against the powers that be and the whole campaign will be coordinated via IM.

So let’s recap: pay-for-play porn is the most lucrative game on the web, dwarfing the earned revenues of the biggest “legitimate” internet business out there. Unlike porn sites which spam you death, these companies are dependent on a secure internet and thus stand to lose out if spam cripples the net’s infrastructure. Meanwhile, hackers are being bribed with free porn to make spam even more lethal, thus guaranteeing that the web becomes increasinlgy unsafe.

Nicely said. I was sitting here thinking about how 1st the history channel has been telling me the world is going to end via this MEGADISASTER!!! or that MEGADISASTER!!! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE TOMORROW! My neighbor keeps telling me Jesus is coming back soon and WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE TOMORROW! Faux news has me convinced that Al queda is everywhere and guess what that means? (yeah the we're all going to die tomorrow thing again). I could deal with all that, but if THE INTERNET IS GOING TO END TOMORROW! Well, then I hope that either the History channel, my neighbor, or faux news isn't pulling my chain after all. I went outside the other day, it was pretty boring out there, just some trees and grass and a big blue celing.

You guys aren't gonna like it, but unfortunately, it's true.
Free internet porn is a reality that will only get "more so."
There has always been a division in the adult industry.....the "old porn," and the "web porn" people.
The "Old Porn" people made movies/videos in the 80's, and continued into the 90'/00's.
They followed the same pattern....early on, $89.98 retail for porn videos back in 1985, till sometime in the 90's where you could get DVD's DELIVERED (Wholesale) for less than $1
Compilations of 7 hours for a $1. Etc. etc. Now, they essentially release "recycled porn" for the cost of shipping, only to embed it with 1-900 number commercials.
Over time, the content became VERY cheap. They understood this.

Now comes "the internet." Wow! On tap porn, filtered and sorted to your liking. Get it on the PC without having the "evidence" laying around. Dazzled everyone. And now, guess what....? About 10 years old, the same cycle is happening.

You can argue about it all you want, but it's a cycle. This has all happened before, and it will happen again.

There are several reasons the cycle has lasted a bit longer, but this too, shall pass.

Free anything on the Net will change the way it's used and operated. That's for sure. How is the thing we are all guessing at. Me included and the guys who quote Y2K as a "Let's not bother." strategy are the ones who will suffer the worse.

So how do I think it will go?

Most paysites are filling with porn that's not worth $3 let alone $30. So the $30 membership model is under threat for most. Those that have a site worth $30 for 30 days will survive, those that don't will not. The surfers are not sheep and you can lead a horse to water. But you can't make him dive in.

What that will do to the affiliate system is anyones guess, but I do not believe the surfers are prepared to support our out dated model.

i have seen many things come and go over the years ...beepers to cell phones..desk computers to laptops,, cell phones and laptops to iphones ..tapes to cds etc..things will always change and mostly for the best..porn has always been around and forever will be...prices will change as will content and ways to view it... I see a future not the end of it..more of a new beginning!

Ali, there are two issues that are facing porn that is making it harder and harder for this business to continue forward as a business:

1 - the "free" generation 18 to 25 year olds who think everything on the net is free, all movies, all music, all everything should be free. They are also no shy to put themselves out there on the net in sexy videos and whatnot, and they don't expect to get paid for it. To some extent, I think that this has been another knife right at the amateur market.

2 - as a result of 1, the "value" of porn has dropped dramatically in the last little while. Porn has always been a surcharge / premium price product, selling DVDs or tapes at $39.95 when regular movies at $15.95. People are having a harder time justifying the premium for porn. As a result, many companies are squeezed, unable to produce material at a profitable price, or they are forced to lower payments to performers, move offshore, or otherwise cut corners. A few are doing well, but a huge part of the porn world is suffering greatly.

One of the bigger programs out there recently started to recycle their older content as new, and to recycle content from "this" site onto "that" site as new. Before, they always shot new content. Recently, that flow of new content has slowed to a trickle.

One of the other bigger programs has recently cut new content production in half or less, and is instead producting great hits sites and other variations, again recycling content they already have in the can.

Porn will always be around, the true question is "will there be enough money in it to support the current business models?"

I am just trying to think on the better side of things Alex..I know that everything you have written is very much so a hard truth..but when times change you have to change with them..that is all I was stating.
Things were easier before..now you have to really work much harder to be the one on top now..some of the people in the biz have gotten lazy as well and wonder what happened to their profits..it does all have to with the free porn sites..sure it hurts but use them to an advantage!

Ali, the easiest way for me to say that there is a problem is when I look at conversions. Sales were (in the last few years) 1 in 500- 1 in 1000 as reported by sponsors and CC companies. Now the number is anywhere between 1 in 4000 and 1 in 10000 routinely across all sponsors. There is still a huge demand for porn, people are still willing to click on thru to sponsors sites, but they are not buying - or something is getting in the way of buying (thinking things like Zango and other similar devices).

So many things are coming together to create a "perfect porn storm" that is making it harder to produce new content, harder to get sales, and harder to get paid at times as well...

They are not buying because they don't have the extra income as before..ie gas prices, economy is down...I just like to think positively about what is ahead and not complain about it..I prefere to do something more than just wait arond for it to hit! That is part of why I have multiple things that make money that I work on....I try my best to think outside the box..I agree with what you are saying and I get it...I have felt the sting from it just as others have...but I am working harder because I want to keep my profits and I will do my best to keep afloat
