Jamie Foxx - Ray
Has never been nominated in the past. He may also be nominated for best supporting actor for Collateral, which would make him the first man to have two acting nominations in the same year since Al Pacino in 1993. Nine people have previously got two acting nominations in the same year in Oscars history but none has ever won both.

Leonardo DiCaprio - The Aviator
DiCaprio's only previous nomination came for best supporting actor in 1994, when he was 19, for What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He lost out to Tommy Lee Jones.

Clint Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby
Has had three personal Academy Award nominations in the past - one for best actor (Unforgiven, 1992) and two for best director (Unforgiven and Mystic River, 2004). He has won one - the directing statuette for Unforgiven. If he is also nominated for best director this time, it would be the first time the same person has got nominations for both acting and directing in the same year since Roberto Benigni for Life Is Beautiful in 1999. Only Benigni and Sir Laurence Olivier have directed themselves to a best actor award - but no-one has ever won both best actor and best director in the same year.

Johnny Depp - Finding Neverland
This would be his second nomination in a row after his first and only previous nomination for Pirates of the Caribbean last year. He was beaten by Sean Penn.

Paul Giamatti - Sideways
Has never been nominated before.

Javier Bardem - The Sea Inside
Nominated once before for Before Night Falls in 2001 - it was the first time a Spanish actor was nominated. Would become the first Spanish actor to win, and the first person to be up for best actor for a foreign-language film since Roberto Benigni won for 1999's Life Is Beautiful.

Liam Neeson - Kinsey
Was nominated once previously for Schindler's List in 1994, but lost out to Tom Hanks.

Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda
Has never been nominated before.

Imelda Staunton - Vera Drake
Has never been nominated before.

Kate Winslet - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Winslet has been nominated three times before - but has never won. Her previous nominations were for Sense and Sensibility (1996), Titanic (1998) and Iris (2002). She may also be nominated for best supporting actress for Finding Neverland, and would become the first actress to have two nominations in the same year since Julianne Moore in 2003. Nine people have previously got two acting nominations in the same year in Oscars history but none has ever won both.

Catalina Sandino Moreno - Maria Full of Grace
Has never been nominated before. Would become the first Colombian actor to be nominated and the first actress to be nominated for a foreign-language role since Fernanda Montenegro in Central Station in 1999.

He also received a best picture nomination for The Remains of the Day in 1994. Now 73, he would be the oldest winner of the best director award if he won, beating Roman Polanski, who was 69 when he won for The Pianist in 2003.

Michael Gondry - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Has never been nominated before.

Mel Gibson - The Passion of the Christ

travesty!
leaving Nick Frost out of the Best Supporting Actor category for Shaun Of The Dead
I demand a recount

at least Paul Giamatti got nominated after being shafted over "American Splendor"

Don Cheadle is also a fine actor who's finally getting some recognition

am I the only one who thought Jamie Foxx was far better in "Collateral" than "Ray" (he was good in both, but I really liked how he played Max in "Collateral")

Oprano needs a movie section, hehehe
