Just curious of what Bush supporters here think about this. This broad issue was tops among Bush supporters, even moreso than terrorism. I myself have VERY little doubt that a crackdown, and a very hard one at that, will be coming in the next couple years. It's a slam dunk easy thing to do to throw to his base which got him reelected and while I agree there are many things companies can do to minimize their risk I could easily see them going after standard hardcore porn and trying to get more restrictions content wise put in place.

Every time an aggragator goes under, it is good for the business of those who take care of business. The demise of third party billing is a greater threat and opportunity than anything else we face.

One of the key items on this years ballots in many swing states was Gay Marriage. it is a hot button issue that brings up uber conservative types that otherwise might not go to the polls. These people typically vote for Bush.

The republican party made sure that this issue was on the ballot in a dozen states, many of them swing state, in order to get additional votes to the polls that might not otherwise have turned out.

Gay marriage was defeated in pretty much every case, and in pretty much every case, Bush carried the state with significantly better numbers than forecast.

Basically, the republicans took advantage of the state proposition system to get more republicans to vote.

Neat trick.

Yes this is what I'm thinking. The most Bush can do is hurt the US porn production industry, leaving it easier for us non US guys.

He will not cut off porn consumption in the US that's for certain.

Grimm, it's a good job of playing politics, but it is again more proof that the election of the president isn't exactly a straight up contest. Having local, state, and federal officials, plus props and other things all on the same balloting day can lead to abuse. In this election, that abuse was more obvious than usual.

It's just another way for the party in power to abuse the rules, then change them before the next election!

Uhhh ... this is bullshit, Alex.

First of all, I think it's pathetic the way gays have become the new niggers for the Republican base. Funny how the ignorant fools who will bleat "fear mongering" don't have the same recation to this "threat to the family" horseshit.

I think it's sad and cynical that the forces of reaction are battling this non-issue so hard, WHICH THEY WILL LOSE based strictly on constitutional grounds. It may take decades, but they will.

But it's perfectly legitimate, and looking at it strictly from the perspective of effective political manuevering, it was damned good.

PD, go and look at the "swing states" from this election. Go see how many of them had the Gay marriage bomb on the ballot at the same time.

It's a get out the vote action, I wouldn't be surprised if republican affiliated groups actually petitioned to get it on the ballots.

it's a nice trick that brings certain types of people to the polls - conservative religeous people. While they are there, they are going to vote for the president too.

I'm impressed.

I know all that, Alex. It's tacky, it's cynical ... and it was very effective.

Doesn't mean there was anything abusive about it.

Alex,

to think that politics is straight up in any way is naive. Not to say that all politicians are crooks, but there are certain compromises that need to be made to get to the highest office in the land. Its all a matter of making your bullshit taste like steak to meat eaters, and a salad to vegetarians. people like Rove are in charge of spinning the stance and stacking the deck. It is a dirty game. there is not a single person in washington that hasn't had to lie to some part of the American public to get where they are. Its a big war to see who will be king.

And then of course, winner takes all, and everything goes back to normal, right? The politics involved in getting a man to office more than likely will not be mentioned again once the man gets there. Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others, right? (Churchill)

Government is cyclical. in 4 years, we may see a democrat, who will look a lot like this republican, because middle of the road is all that is left. I heard multiple commentators talking about how "shored up" the Rep. party is now. they arent shored up, they just figured out first that the majority of america isnt left or right. but stands on the fence, having conservative and liberal views. All american are liberal, All americans are conservative. The Dems just didnt figure it out. If nothing else, you can say the rep. party is organized and well run. the democrats are simply outmanned when fear and necessary military action (im not talking about iraq) is on the table. They are not ready to say "we need to go to war". So when a stratifying moment like 9/11 happens, they come to the table ill prepared and almost sheepishly follow along.

What the Rep. party pulled off on Nov 2 was nothing short of mechanical. It was a close election. but the popular vote meant that, all those people that Kerry and moveon got out to vote... i think Rove used them to his advantage. Sure, you get em out there, and well get em to vote for us. The gay marriage referndums were a stroke of genius as well. Getting mom and pop churchgoer out there to vote, god forbid dudes start marryin dudes

But despite al that

Dont expect great things out your govrnment, vote for selfish reasons, as voting for idealistic reasons is like taking a viagra to watch a porn movie. prety soon you just get frustrated and bored, and maybe a little chafed
