no, they can't....Germans completely destroyed Treblinka, leveled it and put the forest about it. For 20 years birds hasn't ventured into the forest- too much gas in the soil.

I don't remember Dachau being very green, other than the worship areas... and the banks of the ditch between main camp and ivy covered chambers.

I remember getting out of car and starting to walk up to entrance, a tourbus had pulled in and was unloading. The people were animated, not really cheerful but secure in one version of reality... and there were happy smiles.

As I walked through back gates, saw much different look in the eyes of those who were leaving... and there was not one smile.

Some history can not be taught in a classroom...

I found Chinese living in USA, originally from Taiwan, has no feel for this place whatsoever, gotta be their country history. Smiling, making photos in front of barbed wired fences, crematoriums...lucky bastards.

The cemetery in Malaysia, where the servicemen who built the bridge over the river Kwai gave me kreeps, but thoise folks would probably make pics in front of the graves as well.

Surprised you didn't walk up and knock the smile right off their face Serge... They don't owe you anything; but the collective memory of each of those places (or any like them) warrants respect... A slapdown attitude adjustment was certainly in order.

I didn't have to, the guy on the tour who survived the Krakow ghetto, had all of his relatives perished in Auschwitz, told them all to go and fuck themsleves when he was asked to make a group photo of them in front of the crematorium.
