Why do people tend to take credit

And why do people tend to give them credit for things they have no control over....

"I am so much smarter than you, my iq is....."
"He is the smartest guy I know, sharp as a whip"
"Oh you are so beautiful" (and of course the return of "thank you")
"I am a member of the so and so family therefore..."
"My family was here before the pilgrims"

Many of the things that people brag on, they were born with. It was the luck of the draw. And we tend to congratulate them for it and hold them up on pedestals for it thereby reinforcing their perception that they are somehow "more special" than the rest of us.

And as for a person taking credit for what their ancestors did before them...

It is not what you have to work with, it is what you do with it that matters.

I dont believe that IQ is decided at birth, it is influenced by your environment a whole lot.

Perhaps, but most of what would make up your "intelligence quotient" would have been created during your earliest years, a time period over which you have no control....
