I was talking to my wife about the little spam discussion that went on today in a thread that serge locked and put away in the SPAM box.
I told her how someone had claimed it was an optin list only but I had personal proof for myself that it was a harvested email list and not an optin list. And she asked me why the hell I cared. I thought for a few moments and said, well, the problem is the person stated categorically that they "had never harvested emails from any boards" and that the list was an "OPTIN" lisrt. Not purchased, but collected through optins to their various newsletters and that was just a lie. Further when they were called on it, they denied it... and I just hate liars...(dammit)"
Spam does not bother me. If a certain fairly high profile emailer on this board (money money money) were to send me spam and I called him on it he would probably admit loudly and proudly that yep and optin be damned. I can appreciate that kind of honesty.
If you are going to do something, be fucking proud of what you do. Own up when you are caught doing it. Be proud of your cleverness in how you have accomplished something. But fuck, don't deny when you are caught.
Words of wisdom from my Mom: "You can do whatever you want to in this life as long as you are willing to face the consequences" (sorta the Brooklyn constitution)
I agree 100%. I mean, look at Hooper - he admits he spams
There are also a couple of people on the ARS board asking him where he got the emails. I know I've never opted in to any newletters of his or Gary Alan's.
Here's something else interesting from the ARS board in light of what Michael questioned Lee about:
Quote:
Lee,
I tried to check it out but it came up as Spyware. Adaware lists it as spyware. SpyBot S&D lists it as spyware. spywareblaster will not even let you install it. looks like the base application is huntbar, and that is listed here as a Parasite.
There are some differences between a white lie, and a person who is just dishonest.
Spam is an issue that could be criminal soon, and definately has some potential civil issues involved with it. Also the definition of spam is pretty wide open... ( I get spam-copped from people who have join my double opt-in lists on a regular basis) One should definately watch what they post on message boards and such.
On the other hand dishonest people are always dishonest. They are looking to screw, mislead, manipulate.... basicly these are the COCKHOLSTERS of the industry.
We all know who they are. Thing is, it is a very prominate list.... as the industry struggles to find its way, I think more people will tumble into cockholsterdom.....

Maybe Lee was having a low biorhythm day judging by yesterday's performance.
That is why I used no names. There is no way to ever prove that somehow I have not mistyped my name into an email at a submision site which also generated newsletters or whatever.
I know I have never gone and signed up just for a newsletter.
I have submitted to greenguy... If you are listed there, you will get their newsletter unless you opt out... I have never opted out.... similar with other linklists and content sites. I have bought from them, they send me email... Ok with me, just one of those things.
I have never just gone in and signed up for a newsletter or information itself...
I know exactly where the address came from and if need be, I will reveal what it is.
I would definitely be willing to look at proof from someone that I did opt in. Ip addresses, times, dates, source etc.
Lee, its not up to him to prove that you didn't spam him ... that's your responsibility to show that he did opt in ...
>>We currently operate over 15 webmaster resource sites in total all of which parse the opt-in data to a central database.
What is it about the word 'opt in' that so few seem to understand?
OPT IN doesn't mean that i signed up to 1 of 15 resource sites therefore you are entitled to send me a spam for some random product years later ... OPT IN means that i have ticked a box saying 'yes i want to receive email from you'
Call it what it is ... a bulk, unsolicted promotional email ...

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Peaches,
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to address then on another forum.
Ujnfortunately, you forgot to post the part on that thread where it was established that the person who was complaining had been a beta tester of our product and that i had PERSONALLY entered his email address into our database to ensure he had the full release candidate version on his machine instead of the beta test version which is now obselete
As for the issue regarding spyware, at the present time and undergoing further testing from our original programmer of the application and a third party programmer it looks as if the 'spyware' is isolated somewhere in the offices at ARS as we have had a further 10 people run spyware / adware applications on their machine both before AND after they had installed our toolbar and, they have not had the same results as those Matt had.
Of course, i guess its not possible that spyware could have been downloaded onto a machine in the ars offices by any other means that running our toolbar, they dont get thousands of emails or visit thousands of sites as part of their daily work
You are to quick to judge, at the moment it has not been disproved that our application DOES NOT contain spyware in the same way it has NOT been proved that it DOES.
Further updates on this matter will be made available for you to base unextantiated(sp?) claims on once i have them

CJ,
of course you are correct, it isnt up to him to prove i DIDNT spam him but he has been very blatent in trying to embelish HIS opinions about me on this forum WITHOUT proof that we did.
He also says that he can prove we did, i would like to see that proof.

Then please do post this 'proof' that you have.
It will be interesting to see for sure
You say you have proof that we crawled other forums for email addresses, im asking you to prove it.
I am also asking you to prove you have not opted-in to ANY of our resource sites and typed your email address in wrongly as, this would seem to be what has happened in all honesty.
I will think about it here for a moment...
meanwhile, be thinking about what proof you have that I have opted in...
A good solid opt in list will have that information.
just checking my email ... so far i've found 3 ...
i guarantee you, only 1 of these addresses could ever have been entered into one of your resource sites.
just say it lee, you sent a spam!!
spam spam spam spam
embrace it! you are a real webmaster now!!
:P

Like I said, this is personal proof to me..... Yes, at some point Icould have misentered it, but the address in question is one that I use for posting on a certain board and for submissions for sites on that domain.
I happen to keep databases of several flatboards. From February 2002 through just a few months ago, I posted almost exclusively on one board, Voltar's....
In the thread in question, El Pres called you on harvesting from Voltar's.
I went into my database and parsed out the email addresses that are in my message database.
I have made 4278 posts at voltars between February 5, 2002 and today
of these I have 298 posts I used a partyafterdark.com address.
Of these, on 297 I had my name in my email address spelled as sarettah.
On 1 message (message # 25666 on Wed Feb 20, 2002 at 22:50:50 2002 ) I misstyped my email address with the spelling and domain that was used in the message I questioned about this morning.
You can go to Voltars and check the archives if you want, I am not posting text from his board here.
In addition, I went through and found a post from El Pres and a reply from V in which ElPres was apologizing about posting about someone harvesting emails on the board after his message had been pulled. Voltars reply to this was that ElPres had actually been right, Voltar had checked the addies involved and agreed that it looked to him as if someone had been harvesting... I can give the date, time and message numbers of those posts too if need be... Don't want to go rerun the sql right this second... A thunderstorm is blowing up and I am going to have to shut down here in a second.
You will recall that it was when ElPres made the call in today's thread that it was straight out denied and stated that he better not say that stuff without proof.
That is what made me go research it.
So, I am basing my proof on my own personal knowledge of where I use the address and my own personal accuracy...
1 time out of 298 shows that I don't type it wrong very often. And the fact that El Pres named the place that gave me the idea to look.
If you want to see all the times I have posted over there, that can be arranged... I you would like to verify my data, that can be arranged...
It is not absolute proof, there is the off chance that I mistyped it wrong again somewhere else. But, I monitor my submission replies and acceptances (and rejections) very carefully and I have never had one not get back to me at the right address.
I have my mailboxes set to automatically sort into mailboxes according to who they are addressed to. This one stood out because it did not drop into a bucket.
Gotta go lights flickering... will finish when this storm passes.
Back for a bit, I hope.... Just pouring now, but thunder and lightning have let up...
As I was saying...
I have my email set up to auto sort stuff etc and that is whythis email stood out...
On submissions to sites... I dont and have not done that many site submissions.....
Probably about 15 or 20 lists total and only one AVS. I only have 7 or 8 galleries out there. I am not a prolific builder. I am in this to learn what is needed from a software point of view. I had intended to build more, and probably will, so I have made a few content buys alos in which that address would have been used.
I can name all of my sponsors if you want and you can tell me if you do records for them. There arent many.
I can name all of the places I have done content buys from. again there arent many.
For most stuff I use my hatterasdesigns address.
So part of my proof is that I am not so prolific on the boards or in the adult net that I cannot keep track of it.
Like I said... It is not proof positive, but it is enough proof for me to say that what I saw today was a lie..
Originally posted by Opti@Jun 12 2003, 09:47 PM I guess Lee doesn't have an answer to that.. Sorry about chipping you Sarettah.. my bad
Absolutely no prob... and thanx for making me go back and read my original post....
anyway, here is the dataset if anyone wants to puruse for whatever reason.... It is published from excel and excel puts a hell of a lot of crap code in there, but I am too lazy right now to go and trim it out...
Just for the record, spam is 100% legal where I live and do business from. That may change... and if it does we'll abide by whatever the prevailing law is. Just had to pop that in.
