This whole war thing freaks me out. The fact that he might have these weapons and could use them, freaks me out. What if we don't catch him in time?

Come on guys, put my fears to rest. What's gonna happen?

Going to dinner. Be back later.

I am not afraid of war, what I am afraid of is this Country being paralyized by those who do not have our best interest in mind. Coward European countries, terrorist states, dictatorships, and then the appeasers in this country ( anti-war protesters, some democrats, and other groups).

The biggest fear I have is in-action... allowing our enemies time to continue to build up weapons, and time to be used against us.

We need bold leadership ( Churchill style) , bold plans, and devestating firepower to destroy direct threats to this nation and her interests. Pussyfooting around is only going to cost more innocent lives in the long run ( not only American lives).

If we had fought WWII like this, we would all be speaking German.

Waiting for my sister to get here.. always late. Anyone been to 3030 Ocean, that new resturaunt in the Marriot Ocean Harbor?

back to war...

When it comes to any challenge I'm not afraid of people with intellect. Insanity scares me the most because I don't know how to confront that. Terrorism is fuel by emotional agendas, this is true, so in my mind I see that level of passion boarding insanity.

I wonder if Saddam has a dominant mistress. Most power hungry men seek that extreme balance.

Like it or not, we ARE going to war. the 5th and 6th aircraft carriers are on their way. Bush seems very determined to get the job done right.

I hate war, as most others do. However, I understand there is a time for everything. I would rather go in and kick their ass now than have them surprise us and fuck us later. The least American (or coalition even) lives lost the better. Our best option for that is to go in now and eliminate the threat.

before Sept 11 there were always a n argument:
american lives wouldn't be lost if it5 wasn't for a war.

Sept11 changed this argument 180 degrees.

Therefore, it's now the argument:
how many lives can be saved if we do the preventive strike?

And I say it's the only valid argument at the time.

War doesnt scare me, and I wish all the people out there raising hell about it would get a fucking life, or a job, or something.
They obviously didnt have anyone they knew that died or was in the trade center on 9/11, or they would shut the fuck up and support our astonishing military in their efforts to thwart terrorism.
War has been around since the beginning of time, and it always will,
like it or not, its just the way wars are being fought thats changing.
Now, with that said, I support Bush and war with Iraq, IF, it is to
rid the world of Hussein and terrorism, but if its an ego thing, to
say he was the one that got Hussein, then I dont agree with it.
However, Iraq was directly or indirectly involved in the 9/11 tragedy,
so all bets are off in my book. Nuke the fuckers.
What I hate more than anything is the fact that wars have become political, and everyone is walking around on eggshells worrying about what some other country will do if we react in a hostile manner. Fuck em, if they dont like it, they can suffer our wrath as well.

I can SAY I'm not afraid of war, but considering my son's getting ready to enlist, I'd be lying.

Our generation has never experienced first hand a "war". Yes, there have been wars, but it wasn't like WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, etc. where every other house on the block had someone overseas fighting and EVERYONE knew SOMEONE who had died.

With technology the way it is, I don't think we'll see that kind of military destruction - our guys and gals overseas aren't going to be killed en masse like generations before them.

What DOES scare me is all the crazy followers that are in the States. These people aren't going after the armed military, they're going after the unarmed citizens. The big nuke doesn't bother me as I don't think it could find its way here, but the "suitcase nukes" scare the hell out of me.

Serge how many lives would have been saved if the Allies would have attacked Germany when they opted out of their agreement after WWI and started building their military up?

Or after they took part of Czech?

Yes, but how are they going to get those weapons anywhere near our armed military? Understand that I have limited knowledge of all this, and I'm asking honestly - not as my usually smart ass self

I seriously believe we are looking at another Hitler in Saddam Hussien, and that we will be SORRY if we don't take him out soon. Ultimately, the world will be a much better place.

I would go one step further in Iraq and get rid of Saddam Hussien's sons as well. That family is rotten to the core.

I read the most distrubing book, which is currently out of print, by Latif Yahia, who was kidnapped and forced to serve as Uday's Hussein double and bodyguard.

Uday is Saddam's oldest son....violent, sadistic beyond measure, and insane...and in line to share power with his brother if anything happens to Saddam.

There is a well worth reading recap of some of the highlights of the book at:

http://bulletin.ninemsn.com.au/bulletin/Ed...82?OpenDocument

Dianna, I doubt Saddam has a Dominatrix, and if he does he is a submissive nightmare!! Latif recounts in the book Saddam has the mistresses he tires of driven out to the desert, shot at, run over by tanks, and then buried in cement...sometimes two and three at a time.

You are right in that the US might have served the world better if they stopped germany post WWI....

But the US didn't join in to WWII until later....apparently because of a "provisional neutrality act" that was passed in 1935?? (I'm just now learning about this stuff so please correct me if I'm wrong)

Ultimately, I think diplomacy and tact is as much a part of American democracy as big bombs and preemptive strikes.

It's all part of the democratic process....

I'm mostly just stressed about the limbo really, the not knowing, will there be war or not. This conflict has the potential to open quite a can of worms, it can destabilize the entire region, removing current regional leaders and replacing with Osamas and Saddams sprinkled liberally. Obviously it's a delicate matter.

GiGi, I agree - diplomacy is important.

War is a important part of diplomacy - it is an extension of it. Infact just the threat of war is diplomacy. If the rest of the world would stop giving Saddam hope, by stalling things, allowing him to play games, supporting him, etc.... we could maybe handle the problem diplomaticly.

Problem is every nation is looking out for their own interest ( which they should do) - and many of these Nations want to keep Saddam for $$ reasons ( oil contracts), stability in the region, or whatever reason... and some are trying to thwart the US to try and prevent the US from being more powerful, and control a very strategic part of the world. ( and of course oil - natural resources)

Hey Voodoopoonannyman

I believe we have to act in our best interests and destroy any person or country that has intentions, aspirations and means to destroy US. (WetWork if necessary)

That said, Hitler didn't worry about what other countries thought about Nazi Germany taking over Poland etc... at the time either. He just did it and though he was immune to an ass whoopin'. He was incorrect!!!

If we act like we are the only ones on this planet and are willing attack others with impunity the rest of the world will get scared of US they will gang up on us and whoop our asses. (or try to anyways Nuclear Destruction of the entire fuckin' planet not withstanding!!!)

That said I believe Saddam has got to go!!!

I really don't see 'stalling' at this point. I see a process where there is investigation, and this process has been given an alloted time to complete. (I believe the day is January 28 or so?) One more week and we 'should' have an answer....war, or no war.

This is an important part of the process and it should not be forced along.

We all know that for Bush, for the most part, it's about oil...terrorism is secondary. No doubt about it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing....$$ is what America was built on...it's just the way it is....

I caught a quick news blurb and it said that 'Bush scolded the UN' for their unsureness. I think he should just leave them alone until Jan. 28. I'm sure they already know exactly what he thinks. IMHO, they WILL agree to a strike. But I think they feel they MUST complete the process before announcing their decision.

BTW, Bush looked VERY tired and worn on the news....

Haha, I chuckled when I read this....and I agree, I think it's very implausible though.

There really has to be some consideration for other countries and what an attack would mean to them. Think about Israel...they would be a prime target for Saddam's 'weapons of mass destruction' if he were provoked.

I think I said this once before....I'm Canadian. Someone said that those who show malice towards the US were just 'Jealous'....I disagree. IMO, I think the worst aspect of being non-US is the FACT that you really have no control over what happens. The US is powerful enough to do whatever they like. (well, almost whatever they like) .....regardless of world opinion...they can thrust us into a war, peace or whatever they feel suits their needs best.....THAT is frustrating....and that can cause some unsettling vibes.

I think that there is some comfort in NOT being American....alot less to deal with, and you're less of a target too....especially if you are an ocean away from the fighting.

I'm quite comfortable with the US being on top....I have lived a certain lifestyle thanks to her development, and support anything that would continue this lifestyle....but there are 'rules'...and they still need to be followed regardless of the situation....if we don't do that....we have lost what we are fighting for in the first place.

I agree completely, if you recall France and Russia stalled before the UN resolution was passed too, obviously they were negotiating for concessions which once received changed these members of the security council's mood dramatically.

Whether or not Saddam has to be removed because he is a maniac tyrant that envisions his destiny as the greater Chalif of The Mother of Civilization, or that it's a family feud with a certain family we love =) the fact is there is a shitload of oil there that someone will administer and *ahem* profit from. Obviously former colonial powers like France want a cut from all this and they didn't like the bone they were thrown. You can jump right on this one french lovers =)

STOP WATCHING CNN!!!!

the rest of the world isn't waiting with baited breath to be saved by america, most of the countries who WON'T support the usa are doing so because they believe AMERICA STARTED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE and are sick of being called on to do as america says!

australia, canada, and a handful of other insignificant countries do as we are told, the countries who have a strong hold on the UN are sick of being bullied by america.

with all that said, its too late now to consider who started it. hurry up and finish it!!!! SOMEONE IS GOING TO!

I will choose a country based on government conspiracy and lies over one built on violence, hate and no rights.

I really don't see 'stalling' at this point. I see a process where there is investigation, and this process has been given an alloted time to complete. (I believe the day is January 28 or so?) One more week and we 'should' have an answer....war, or no war.

This is an important part of the process and it should not be forced along.

----------------------
he has been successfully stalling for 12 years. he is stalling now.

he submitted a weapons declaration which was supposed to have accounted for all weapons and/or their destruction which he was supposed to have done as a requirement of the ceasefire agreement he signed after he invaded Kuwait. The declaration he submitted recently was the same information that he submitted the first time and did not add any clarity to issues like massive stock piles of weapons which were not accounted for and biological and chemical weapons programs which continued even during the original UN inspections.

The inspectors themselves have been very clear recently in stating repeatedly that the current weapons declaration he submitted did not answer any questions that have been asked repeatedly for the last decade... such as info on nuclear programs, chemical and biological programs and stockpiles of weapons that are still not accounted for.... though the current declaration was supposed to be the one to answer all questions.

now they are finding weapons and documents which were not declared. its nothing new. on one hand he says "here is everything we have, we are cooperating 100%" ... then they say "oh,.. well yeah, we forgot about those". Can we assume that they forgot about all the missing equipment and weapons and documents still unacounted for and that its just ok to "forget" at this point? i mean "forgetting" is not really "defiance" right? its just an unfortuneate oversight from someone who really wants to help and the world should show patience and understanding?

The primary purpose of the weapons inspectors is to account for, verify and to destroy illegal weapons. Iraqs responsibility to the UN and UN Security Council is to cooperate unconditionally. They have NEVER done that in 12 years.

The inspectors do not conclude anything on the 28th January. they are merely submitting a report to the UN. the inspectors have said that comprehensive inspections to their satisfaction could take up to 1 year. Why should Saddam Hussein have one more year? He had 12. if he can be proven to be in non-compliance today... what should he be given? 12 more years?

Since the President is scheduled to give a State of the Union Address on Jan 28th, i think we can assume that is going to be D-Day for Saddam. Either that or in some way they are going to really turn up the heat.

and maybe i just dont get it.

can someone please explain to this ignorant kid from Alaska how the US/Bush will profit from or "control oil" as a result of overthrowing Saddam Hussein or invading Iraq to do so?

What are people suggesting? that the US will take over their economy, their markets, the eports, their oil fields?

i have not heard anyone explain this one aside from made vague remarks that "its all about oil".

If its "all about oil" would we have not been better served for the last decade by having sanctions lifted? Iraq is a significant world oil producer and the UN has been restricting their ability to export oil. We were the largest buyer. Was this beneficial to the US for the last 12 years to not have access to that oil on the market?

Is it beneficial to the US now to mobilize a military force and drive oil prices up for everyone at the mere threat of war?

can ANYONE make a convincing arguement as to how exactly the US will "control" oil in the region as a result of overthrowing Saddam Hussein? I really dont understand this statement. Do we "control oil" anywhere else? or do the producers and the markets?

War is normal in the history of nations. The fact that wars are fought mostly "over there" and not here in the US is -well - it is a pretty fortunate combination of circumstance and timing. Saddam is a threat but not of the Hitlerian type. He may aspire to be a Hitler but he certainly does not have the military capability of WW II Germany nor does he have the military staff that Hitler put together. I am not afraid of Saddam in the sense that his capability of delivering a blow to the US mainland is near nil.

Might he have a few chemical weapons sitting around waiting to unleash on US troops or maybe Israel? Yes. Maybe a few but in the context of a war and compared to the history of war, I don't think it is significant at all.

Australian newspaper clippings, 1990-1991 (Gulf War)

I put this scrap book together as a high school project, every week i'd cut out a few articles from the paper about the gulf war, focusing on the propaganda element as compared to the WWII 'marketing' of hitler.
(i want to be in the advertising industry, before the internet was an option)

we all *remember* what happened but the details are always lost ... i found this scrapbook in an old box the other day and was reading through it and felt strangely like i was reading a newspaper of TODAY. same names, same characters (only the son is fighting for his fathers honor this time round)

The stock portfolio mentioned on the bottom of this page wasn't a bad tip

Delta Gold was 46 cents and peaked at over $5.00
Futuris was 28 cents and it went to over $2.50

So why didn't someone start the process a long time ago then? Why did Bush choose now, post 9/11? The 'process' could have been started a long time ago. This is no reason to negate the process.

Not convinced of 'MASSIVE' stock piles.....but stock piles none the less...agreed. The world agreed to inspections. Let them find things and give them time to report. Why push it before it's time? We've waited 12 years....what's 1 more week?

Quote:

So, let them finish their jobs then hmm?

Quote:

That's probably very true. HOWEVER, the UN is VERY aware of Bush's position and will most likely announce a decision of some kind January 28th or shortly thereafter. No one is saying give him another year.

Quote:

Well, see, it's like this....it would mean that would be one more foothold for the US in that part of the world.....a part of the world where Israel is their only ally and only a handful of others are 'warm' to the US. It's not just about Iraq's oil...it's about a stronger position in the entire region...and why is that important? Oil.

And that's just the way I see it....

I disagree with the threat assesment of Saddam, I think the Hitler analogy is very sound: Saddam has not only threatened to annex neighboring states but has gone on through military force and attempted to get this done (Iran, Kuwait) His initial goals and many other Iraqi leaders' aspirations as early as 1949 was a greater TransJordanian Iraq coalition that reaches all the way to the West Bank. This is likely why Jordan is such good friend to US.

When you stop and think what it was that contributed to the stopping of the Hitler war machine, if you're american you will pat yourself on the back, but the lack of oil and 'materiel' was a critical factor. Such materials exist in plenty supply and will continue to be delivered to Iraq by anxious governments as the global oil supply shrinks and Iraq positions itself as the #2 supplier of crude by 2030.

Yes we can research alternative sources of energy but right now it really takes these fuels to run the existing war machines of ALL nations. This will continue to be so for the next couple of decades. Even after discovery or improvement of alternative energy sources it will still take decades to convert an already reluctant industry to these new discoveries. Things don't happen overnight in corporate industry. This should explain why oil si so important.

About the Bush/oil connection, you know at every election they talk about the campaign funds, last election Bush received the biggest in history I think. These people are capitalists, they don't donate to charity. You can bet your paycheck they expect returns, concessions, etc. There are many cups reaching for the global punch bowl. I any case Iraq and Kuwait share an oil well. A very large one in southern Iraq. Apparently Kuwait technology (Western investments including Bush family representation) is able to pump out more of this oil than the Iraqis can so this was key reason for the Kuwaiti invasion. There's your connection.

We really need to look beyond the Jan28 speech, the next elections or whatever and put things in perspective how they might/will unfold over the next few decades.

I agree with the second quoted paragraph that these finds of these warheads are relatively insignificant. Especially if you consider the no matter what, a self fullfilling prophecy has been created and Saddam will never forget how close he came, nor would he ever be allowed to live happily on a beach in Libya. That's fantasy, there would be dozens of assasins lining up. He knows it!

Ok that's enough of this, time for work!

To reiterate: Saddam may be Hitlerian in his intentions but he is certainly not in his capabilities. Hitler annexed Austria and then tore through Poland and Czech. in days. Hitler shocked the world with his swift takeover of France.

Saddam fought with Iran for 10 years and was bombed into submission by the US in just 40 days and 40 nights.

Not only does Saddam not have the needed military might, he does not have the exceptional military leadership that Hitler did. I repeat and think it is pretty clear when I said Saddam "may aspire to be a Hitler but he certainly does not have the military capability of WW II Germany nor does he have the military staff that Hitler put together. "

If you disagree, I am very interested in why. I can't imagine you believe Saddam's capabilities to be on par with the war machine of WW II Germany.

No they are not right now, but that's why I suggested we look 10, 20, 30 years ahead (with an ageing insane paranoid Saddam in power) you would be surprised the kind of weapons and equipment oil money can buy you FAST when you monopolize a resource like oil.

Personally I think the current administration is looking at this scenario and they realize that their investments will go kaputt if they don't take advantage of the fact that US Armed Forces kick butt NOW and they are mobilized NOW. Many people are not aware of the $$$ and effort it takes just to mobilize an army and move it half way across the world. This kind of effort does not repeat overnight.

Ultimately I hope for a coup, the man is a tyrant and the country would benefit even with puppet regime but I really worry about what happens AFTER. There will be all kinds of instability with Iraq possibly fracturing along ethnic lines and neighboring armies intervening. This could snowball into a mess fanatics like Al-Queda would only benefit from. Despite this if I was in the White House that's what my strategy would be =) After all the contract with the Saudis and other gulf nations is to protect them from threats like Osama and Saddam. You just can't be a soldier without a war

I have all kinds of friends and relatives in or on their way over there, so the prospect of the loss of someone close to me concerns me greatly.

* I wonder if the American people really know how long we're in for. I fear - and I could be wrong, but it's my fear - that this is not going to be 40 days and 40 nights of bombing followed by a "war" that lasts less time and inflicts fewer US casualties than the Tet offensive. Beyond that, we'll have major forces in the region for YEARS. The whole Kurd/Suni/Shite conflict is not going to be settled in a few months of occupation. I also expect that alQaida and others will lash out at the U.S. and its allies

* I was watching Buchannan and Press on MS-RNC this morning, and they had a talking head from the Republican party on. I came away from the interview thinking of The Guns of August . It almost seems as if the U.S. is putting into motion a scenario where we "HAVE" to go to war at a certain time simply because the plans call for it. I find that disturbing.

* I'm not sure what annoys me more - the professional leftists dragging out all the trite "stop the war machine" slogans from the past, or the "No Nothings" making the claims that those demonstrating for peace this weekend are "giving aid to Saddam." Equally moronic, I suppose, and equally annoying.
