8 days isn't possibly long enough.
Snails multiply worse than rabbits. He'd have to stop each night to get his groove on, during which the resulting motion would make him slide an additional 2 feet. The end result is that he'd stay at the bottom of the tree boffing his slimy little brains out and sending hundreds of smaller snails up the tree. (If you've ever had snails in one of your fish tanks, you know I speak the truth!)
