Nor do either the AVN shows or Fays shows really sponsor their own events at nite -- both of them depend on sponsored parties by outside companies as an additional draw to their moneymaking activities which include charging for both booth space and admission to sponsors and webmasters who may be attending.

While I don't necessarily agree with the manner in which some regional events are run, I think that having a public party that attempts to pull people away from the activities that paying sponsors have planned is tacky.

In the end, attendees will go where they like, and I'm sure as many don't attend nite time events for various reasons as do. Perhaps Forest should have scheduled a party as a late nite event after the planned events were finished and that would have alleviated alot of the problem here but it's his gig

My only point on all this is, If I setup a smaller webmaster gathering in like portland, seattle, etc. Went to all the work getting it ready, had sponsors help out, etc. and then some people went and started parties and promoted it around that time, I might be a little pissed. nothing against forest or anyone else, but I can see both sides on this issue.

I can't speak for Mike, either...but having attended his parties, I've always seen them as very personal get-togethers of friends. Mike basically knows ever person in attendance.

I've never seen Mike post "anybody that wants a limo ride to my party, let me know..." in an attempt to get people there.

Hey everyone!

I have been on the road most of the last month so I haven't been around much, but I was skimming the boards and see this place is really hopping! Congrats Serge and MikeAI!

Let me put in my $.02 about the difference in the partys....it is simply "Invitation Only". All of MikeAI's parties have been by invitation only. There was no open door policy (ask Andy :-). Just like the Oculus/WEG party at the last show (very nicely done, as well). We all have private meetings/dinners/cocktails at all of the shows...but it's different when you try to bulk recruit the visitors away.

Of course, this is just my personal opinion.

The majority of the regional gatherings arent directly looking to make money from the event, otherwise they'd be charging admission to webmasters and all that nonsense.

DJ, also a good point, When AWE first came around, I was thinking, they don't want sponsors to come unless they help sponsor, Thought it was bs at first, then thought about it, and it wasn't that bad of an idea. As voice media does put out alot, etc. So webinc.com ended up sponsoring the events each show. Of course being so busy, out of all the shows, Portland will be the only one we make it too:)) Dig good point also.. My take is, if it's a show like ia2000 or so,shit everyone can have there own party, but mabey a smaller show, it might be better not too look like someone is stepping on the toes of all the ppl who worked so hard to put it together..

event that's all he said. Maybe people are upset because it followed
a post about his teaming up with Interclimax on some things and they think that he's going to exploit the
event.

Are only webmasters who have no services or products of their own to sell invited to the event? Why not be clear about it then?

yeah I see the point if the party coincides with an event party, it may be judicious of forest to schedule his thing when there's nothing else going on at the show but I'll tell you this: I attended MANY meetings in vegas that weren't on the official schedule ;)

Dig, I agree to a point. I always thought it was asinine that the AWE events tried to not have sponsors show up that were not sponsoring the event. I attended the L.A. one and had no problems, but I was not about about to attempt to circumvent the sponsors of the event. Attending the event and talking to webmasters is one thing. Trying to direct them to parties that are not in line with the event planners is rude and pretty damn seedy.

A simple contact of Circes or SusieS would have saved the whole mess rather than trying to plan something on the side to take advantage of their hardwork in gathering sponsors and webmasters.

DJ, seems to me that webmaster conventions are places to do business, that's what they're for... it's not out of line for me to say that I'm going to get with any webmaster at the show who wants to discuss business with me, if I were actually going to attend the event.

what is in bad judgement if not bad taste is party organizers thinking that they can control who meets who and who talks about what at their events. Personally I don't care, I'd rather have people over to the house than meet them in Vegas but that's my .02

I am in total agreement with Diamond Jim, the work that Circes and her staff have done for this show is incredible. Sponsorships were available for a very resonable price and for someone to come in and try to captilize on it at the last minute is indeed bad taste.

Perhaps they just had not thought it through properly, now that it has been pointed out they will correct things.

It's a free country (for the time being), so people are free to do as they wish, but...

I think it shows incredibly bad taste to take advantage of the work put in by individuals arranging an event like this. Whoever is organizing it has no doubt put in time and effort to secure venues and arrange entertainment, as well as advertise and publicize the event. It's pretty seedy to swoop in and attempt to steal webmasters away to a function that is NOT associated with the sponsorship of the event.

Interclimax sounds like they are planning an interesting get-together in Amsterdam. I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate similar treatment...

Well I'll say this.. I certainly have nothing to gain from newbies with tunnel vision. Absolutely nothing.

I myself found Voltar's newbie board about a year and a half ago. Yes, I was one of the newbies, and I don't think that I have tunnel vision. :)

The newbies know that they are other boards out there.. I myself have encouraged them to venture out and network and learn. It's important that they do that.

Voltar has his posting guidelines.. we all have to follow them when posting there. He's *always* had a *very* strict no spam policy, that's nothing new, so it's no big surprise.

We have newbies there that are still struggling to learn basic html, some have no idea how to make a console.. etc.. We teach them the basics so that they will have at least a fighting chance to make it with hard work. And like you posted, we encourage them to try new things and to think for themselves. I couldn't agree with that more.

And certainly, I for one would never want to "clip anyone's wings" :)
