I agree that it's very hard to quantify what's good resource traffic and what's not good resource traffic. It's just as hard for me to quantify that for my sites as it is for ad buyers to quantify it, because it varies from site to site and person to person.

The short answer is always going to be what the market will bear.

The long answer, the one I think you are looking for, is how will the market be determined.

First off, a standard would be nice -- one that all resource sites adhered to and could put statistics determined in the same manner against one another so an evaluation of apples to apples could be done.

Who's going to determine the standard? I'm sure that advertisers and recipients of advertising dollars are going to see things such as measurable standards in very different ways, at least initially.

Would measuring the number of new webmasters, clients, etc that a resource site produced be a good measure? Perhaps so if all webmasters were created equal.

Would measuring the number of eyeballs each resource could deliver daily be a good one? Only if all the brains behind those eyeballs were created equal.

Fortunately there are different demographics from board to board, that's obvious from the posts and it's obvious that not all radio shows have the same listeners from the chat that goes on during.

I think that ideally for the advertisers one standard, be it impressions, clicks, whatever would be an initial comparison. Then the real key would be a demographic breakdown of who's using what -- some programs want newbies to the business, some want those with paysites, some want those with vast quantities of so-so traffic. Being able to match both quantity of reach and quality of reach would be ideal.

Then again we don't live in an ideal world so I guess it's just what the market will bear without any other qualifications as of yet :)

Based on supply & demand, what the market will bear?

Based on traffic to each individual page? (high traffic pages get higher rates, low traffic pages get lower rates)

Based on outgoing clicks? And if so, who's stats get trusted?

Based on conversion? And if so, how can the resource owner really know if the advertiser isn't a partner program, e.g., a content provider?

I'm all ears, and am willing to consider thoughtful suggestions.
