hahah gord what a catchy come back you have there.

Please remember I have NOTHING to do with day to day operations. I do not even know 3/4 of the employees we have at the office. Also remember InterCosmos.com is just more then http://directnic.com DirectNIC is just ONE of our products.

gord - are you still scamming people out of their hard earned money for .SEX domains?? Did you see the post that Robin Nixon made?? You are taking money from misleading people, selling snake oil - which in my OPINION makes you a THIEF!!

While I have not heard many negatives things about DNS, and I have never said DNS sucked ( I jsut said directnic is much larger and does more business, is ICANN approved, etc....) Steal peoples money, for phantom, vapor domain names is wrong!

Trying to sue people to get attenion for yourself, with a baseless lawsuit for .SEX is even a bigger joke.

Come back to reality Gord - stick to TLDS.

Oh and you are always welcome here at oprano.com to say what ever you want...

So the traffic to generate new members must come from somewhere
*****

It comes from there own network of free sites, tgp's, link lists, etc.

Seriously, what's more cost effective, hire peeps to create the traffic generating sites, pay set wages, let them go after sites are built, keep revenue vein for yourself? Or pay webmasters to do the same thing on a continual basis? I'll take the first option.

Lee I understand what you're saying but .....
The free site affiliates feed the programs providing the traffic (be it members or visitors) for the share market to occur

Egro "If large sponsors gave up their webmaster affliate programs they would still eat fish the rest of their life-- " may not hold true
At some time the members will leave and must be replaced with new members
So the traffic to generate new members must come from somewhere

and regardless of how you want to wrap it, market share is very real (and will always be)
x amount of consumers in market
y amount are your customers
y/x = your market share

With new user growth slowing market share and reach become more important

If large sponsors gave up their webmaster affliate programs they would still eat fish the rest of their life--

Why?

B2B - share market

Its offensive how much money one sponsor sends another sponsor every month :-) Webmasters need to stop the sponsor abuse and stop creating liability because one day sponsors will close their programs all together and swap spit based on their existing infrastructure.

Will affliates be an outdated word in 5 years?

New business Model: Share market

Lee Noga

--------

So you truly believe that Marketshare is an old business model?

"Share Market"... perhaps.

"Saturate Market" is what has happened and will continue to happen. Then, what good is it to share a market that is worth-less* (*not "worthless").

If a new player wants to enter the game, we can not stop them and should not. But should we openly invite them and keep announcing how lucrative this industry is. The media whores that spent so much time telling the world that "online porn" is so lucrative, saturated the playing field. They only have themselves to blame. Wouldn't it be wiser to tell people this industry sucks, that there's no diamonds left in the mines, instead of creating more competition.

If you don't start telling people this industry isn't worth it, soon it will be.

It is better to operate "in stealth mode" and grow your business. You can hide for as long as you want. But human nature leads most people to brag about their conquests, most people need the approval of their peers, and that will be their downfall.

Give someone a fish, they eat for today. Teach them how to fish, they eat whenever they want...

...and they will keep eating

...and may even eat your fish someday

...and may even eat all the fish

...and even though you may not starve, you will have LESS fish to eat.

Your choice.

Hey .. now why am I not surprised.. a place for Mike to preach to his own choir .. :))

Webfather.. domain speculators chew up bandwidth . tie up resources so bad that they choke the registry every am between 4:30 and 8

Sorry you don't agree but its a business decision . if I need to block out 250 abusers for the sake of the stability of the system for the tens of thousands of other clients .. then so be it. I should have cleared this decision with you first??

We break new sales records _everyday_ .. so I guess our dinosaur approach model is working. Hows the value of your domain holdings holding up?? :))

Mike .. you continually never cease to amaze me. Well at least you have your own forum now in which to beat on your chest (such as it is).

haha ..You will NEVER be in the league of Domain Name Systems. There's first class, no class and then there's Mike.

So which is it Mike ?? 65 or 50 employees ... *laughing* .. can't even get the numbers right between posts? Do they go shoot content in the lulls in the customer service calls?

Its called efficiency arse.. if we can do more with less ..then we have a competitive edge over you . (and you really have no clue as to what our company comprises of, your posts continually prove it).. .If you knew anything about this business.. you'd know that an Icann accreditation is a noose around your companies neck. I won't spill the beans but I wouldn't hold too much stock in your accreditation card.

You'd also know that most (if not all ) registrars are downsizing due to increased competetion and diminishing returns. Contrary to that trend we are expanding.

and Mike to set the record straight .. I don't have a problem with your company (I could care less about it, it doesn't comprise anything remotely resembling competition to me) ..

But you however , we need. Your mouth is our biggest sales tool. Keep up the good work.

:))

(now.. lets time the comeback)

On the magicians and tricks thing;

[generalisation coming up]
For people who pride themselves on helping newbies break into this industry, it's sort of contradicting yourself if you say you shouldn't share info and tricks, I'm not saying you should share all, but hm, still.
[end generalisation]

I for one have a ferkin heapload of ideas, ready to be put to market - the only thing lacking is the $ to get it off the ground. I think that's a problem for a lot of smaller folks in the bizz, so far I've managed to run all my things on a shoe-string budget and keep it together with lot of bailing wire and duct tape. Let's not forget spit.

*shrug* Ofcourse, at my age, it's a bit strange to walk into a bank or any other sort of place and get yourself a helping of $ to fund your stuff, so maybe I'm just ranting :D

MikeAI,

I was just generalising though, not singling out people :)

I dunno, I still see a lot of shady sites out there, at least, things that I personally think are shady - thankfully everyone on this board knows how to play the game, but there are way way way too many newbies or plain out punk bitches out there who screw around with shit on a major scale. No good.

Now that I'm done bitching (hey Serge? Are there any awards like 'best bitchin of the week'?) I'll just go on with something else;

What do you all think about the so-called 'support' services that are offered these days? We're talking portal-like news shit, interesting little add-on stuff for your members areas, etc.? Good? Bad? Just plain out not worth the cash? Or what?

:D

One man cannot come up with everything on his own, I don't believe that. You need to brainstorm and share a little to spark creativity and keep stimulating your mind. Not all, but some of these newbies coming up have some excellent ideas. Many times they'll hit on something they don't even realize yet, but its valuable and useful.

Some observations on life:

It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

No one is listening until you make a mistake.

Always remember you're unique. Just like everyone else.

Never test the depth of the water with both feet.

It is far more impressive when others discover your good qualities
without your help.

If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of car payments.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat & drink beer all day.

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

A closed mouth gathers no foot.

Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your mouth is moving.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Never miss a good chance to shut up.

Time for dinner. ;)

Just a note regarding that whole quality thing. Last night I was watching TV, and some program came on about jobs and stress, and all the bad mojo associated with it.

They interviewed a guy who was in quality control/quality assurance of a big company, and he got overworked.

Quote: "I'd be dead and buried now if I'd be running QA on a porn site"

Wake up 'n smell the collective coffee - if people are making fun of the _lack_ of quality in this industry, that should be a pretty big indication that something needs to be done eh?

Ofcourse, I'm talking to a brick wall here because I ain't a big player :)

But okay, that's got nothing to do with this issue (totally separate story :P) - but hey, try for quality instead of quantity is my new motto.

However, it irks me when people post generalities that are not accurate.

If gord flips out because you say we are bigger, then he is a fool. facts are facts. opinions on the other hand is a differnt thing.

The LACK of focus on quality and SERVICE is WHY the industry suffers today! When I was in the corporte world I had a plaque on my wall that said

Mikeai,

well you know directnic and domain name systems are both good size domain registers. We only register like a few hundred per month, which is quite small, but it's a value added service you know:))

ThrobX ,

Newbie day is going to be headed up by RawAlex and Myself. As you know, this is nothing but business to the two of us and we are only going to have people there speaking that believe the same way. This will not be a candy coated day of kissing newbie ass, we are not sponsors, we don/t have to kiss ass.

Should be interesting to see how many Newbies go back to their Kmart jobs after this day is over.

SunTzu, re: the battleground. War is profitable. The money flows and is increasing. Newbie webmasters send traffic, they buy hosting, they buy content, they buy domain names, they provide eyes so the resource site webmasters can charge $20k+ to advertisers. They are hungry and their efforts and dollars are responsible for the growth of the business as well.

Soo.. since there are some good 'newbies out there, let's give them the straight dope, not just the hype; and some general advice and guidence to help make them part of the solution and not part of the problem. I think the people involved in 'newbie day are going to have a good time with it, as well as make an impression on the 'Newbies. Boot Camp is probably a good title.

gord from domainnamessytems.com is fond of braggin how many customers and domains he gets transfered from http://directnic.com I thought this was a bold statement, so I had Sig the CEO of http://directnic.com run a search and ths is what he sent me:

"He [gord and DNS] does not even show up on the radar of registrars for us. I can't find him [gord/dns] when looking at the stats that we maintain of domains transferred to and from specific registrars."

Of course since we have hundreds of thousands of domains going through our system, I guess 15-30 domains a month is a lot of business for some people and companies.

Like most things in life, it is all relative.

Very true, but I find that a lot of today's newbies are just trying to supplement family income. This business is attractive to them due to the working conditions. While this does most likely make them a day late and a dollar short to ever hitting the monetary heights of yesteryear, some are just happy with a few hundred extra a month.

Taz,

You figured out my secret, I do have a direct line to Miss Cleo. That's where the $1,274 I've made in the AVS business has gone! And she don pon never been wrong, mon! I feeling irie with Miss Cleo.

Seriously, I'm not saying that people should quit their jobs if they're starting out. But if they're serious about doing something on their own, WHATEVER it is, they can afford to burn a few vacation days. I remember burning some vacation days back long long ago when I was working for someone else, just to spend the day at the library doing research. If you WANT to do it, you'll do it.

Otherwise, they're wannabes, and I hope the boot camp day is serious about drilling into their heads that this isn't a get rich quick industry, you gotta work your ass off and then some if you're just getting in.

And Fay, please have them push the concept that this is a BUSINESS just like selling hammers or painting houses. If you don't have business skills, you aren't going to succeed. This is no longer the time of the "right place, right time, no skills Einstein!"

(hey, that kinda rhymes)

Do sponsors want to do business with WANNAbes or with GONNAbes? ;D

Damn it - that is what they say. I am not sure that is what they do though. Maybe JohnIP can shed some light.

I, myself, am not sold on todays 'newbie. But the exhibitors & sponsors say they want to attract them. So, ya gotta do, what ya gotta do. However, THIS newbie day will probably be like none before. It will be Boot Camp - there will be no candy coated bullshit. If they survive - hopefully they will be a 'newbie worth handing over to our exhibitors.

If I had my way - we would have a gathering of serious people with varying viewpoints, who want to network and do business together. But, somehow 1,000 serious people is not as good as 2,000 bodies.
