ThrobX,
Sorry, I thought the whole concept of the show was to expose webmasters to the products and services of the show sponsors,my bad.
Not everyone who has serious intentions of staying in this biz can afford to give up their day job right off the bat. I didn't realize you had the direct line to Miss Cleo and already knew who was going to succeed in this business. Care to share since I'm sure you'd save sponsors lots of $$ with that info, talk about target marketing.
Taz This business was born AND IMPROVED on calculated risk and thrives through adaptation!!!

Webfather -
Jenna Jameson!! hahaha
She is a mover and a shaker.. (and a few other things) in the video world.. But did not make an appearance in the Adult Internet world until:
I thought it was a guy from the sites Serge sent his clicks to, Crescent Publishing, that set up Vivid Video to make money on the Net. Wicked Video still has no clue.
Hustler just got a clue. Dunno how many other big name adult video companies there are. Seymore Butts maybe. I think he got tied up long ago with Seth and after getting that fucking over probably doesn't trust Net guys.

Webfather I agree.... Gord takes good care of a few clients ( I am sure he does it personally) But do to his comapnei size he cannot handle hundred of clients like this.
Sharpie,
I think you should mention it and offer it on the site. As I mentioned, some of your target market has to plan around other jobs. By not knowing that alternative package is available they won't bother making plans to attend. If you get them in on a one day this time and they realize what they have missed by not attending the whole show, next time they will plan for whole show.
MikeAI......I have a private domain board with about 250 members. Gord has decided that they are "Too high maintenence" to take care of their problems yet he brags on other boards what great customer service he has.
When he decides to provide no support for 1 or 2 of them it is the same as doing it to all 250. Those 250 talk to another 250 and before you know it ALL domain speculators know to stay away. If is much easier to put out 1 or 2 small fires than put out 500 fires.
Add to that the conflict of interest and before you know it.....poof!

"To attract more newbies offer a one day pass. Lots of them are still working mainstream jobs and have to plan schedules around their workweek."
Sorry Taz, I disagree. Sharpie, remove the one day pass option. If someone wants to get into this business and they can't afford to take a few days off from their job, then they aren't serious about being in this business. That will eliminate additional wannabes and will concentrate the show even further with serious people.
Do sponsors want to do business with WANNAbes or with GONNAbes? ;D
I think Webfather said mover and shaker, NOT mover and spammer! haha
No doubt xspams has achieved some success... but in my opinion this just comes from being a front/spammer for old line programs who don't want to spam on their own for certain reasons ( AOL for instance)
When did Sless come around?? Though he works for a big video company he did help turn their INternet Division around... even if it was by shady means...

Can someone post the link to the greatlakes convention please
--------------------
Bingo.. Taz. That is why we made Sunday - Newbie Day. We will offer one day passes on site, but we didn't feel it was too smart to encourage it at this stage. They really need to attend all 3 days, as each is extremely different in focus.
Maybe, we are wrong and we should start publisizing it. Trying to protect them against themselves - and not encourage them to take the easy way out. They need to do all 3 days if they can. That is why workshops are starting on the weekend, and IF they survive Newbie Day - Monday will be an extremely valuable day to them.
Like Serge said....I was selling a product for $15.50 a foot while my competition was selling for $2 a foot. We both sold the same amount of footage. Who do you think made more money? ;-)))))))
Shhhhhh! Don't give the answer away!

Webdad,
I'm gonna post this question on the

When I was in the corporte world
**********************************
JohnIP.....when you were in the corporate world most of these guys were in diapers. :-))))
They can't do the math and they can't see much further than next months RENT.
I believe the one of the WORST marketing mistakes these guys make is send NEWSLETTERS to CURRENT CUSTOMERS with links to their COMPETITION!! This is just SILLY!!! Send the newsletters to those that may have cancelled.....NOT current customers. And try to sell YOUR product first.
The cost of acquiring a customer is expensive. The cost of pissing off a customer is FREE.
An uneducated surfer will renew for a longer period of time than an educated one. Sometimes they know too much and usually it is the webmaster that educates them.
I think folks in this business need to take an algebra class so they can understand BOTH sides of the equation.
When it comes to marketing.....I can only point to a handful that TRULY understand it.
Like Serge said....I was selling a product for $15.50 a foot while my competition was selling for $2 a foot. We both sold the same amount of footage. Who do you think made more money? ;-)))))))

Sharpie - Too tough to die ;-) (in a good way)
The reason this industry is in the doldrums -
That and for a large portion complacency- where have the innovations been for the last 18 months in our industry?
Still amazes me that anyone can enter this business (in both a good and bad way)
No certification, no training, no license
You have a license to drive a car, fly a plane, broadcast on TV and radio (including ham radio)
to sell real estate
But not to publish and operate a business on the Internet
Nope.... not really interested in the IA2000 style. If you want to see 10,000 Kid Rock wantabees - This is the 7th year for AdultDex.
Cybernet Expo was developed as a networking & learning show. To focus on this, it needs to be targeted. I have no idea how many we lose by having the 21 age limit, but I feel it does get rid of a lot that just come to freeload and party, and protects us and the sponsors from underage liabilities.
Of course, the easiest way to insure success to to kiss a lot of asses, but I just have never learned to pucker very well. I am just too damnned stubborn. Maybe, that is why I am still here. Too stubborn to quit until I am ready to.
"Basically the success of a product has little or nothing to do with its quality."
####################################
Grimmy ...you had me at Hello;))...but lost me with this one;))
The reason this industry is in the doldrums it seems to be in is becasue of this VERY attitude...The CONSTANT focus on taking the money and running. The CONSTANT focus on selling the non-quality widget to the unsuspecting new customer AND NOT focusing on making that sale a repeat sale for EVER!!! The LACK of focus on quality and SERVICE is WHY the industry suffers today! When I was in the corporte world I had a plaque on my wall that said
"Quality of Service-Those activities by a company after it has made the sale to inhance Customer satisfaction and CREATE REPEAT SALES!!"

Include buttons, banners, text ... whatever in welcome with linking instruction if you do not already
Benefits the exhibitors to have many eyeballs
For more marketing guess you have to look at what you want the show to be
Do you want to be IA2000 size from 2000?
Or do you prefer it stay more intimate show?
I prefer CybernetExpo for lack of "Kid Rock" wanna be's
Gord now too. But he was probably referring to Mike more than you. Well Mike's gf is almost 12 so it's good that he is so youthful! Thanks Gord!

Well Serge your recent lifestyle changes really seem to have worked miraculously well. Netpond people are saying you have the energy and looks of a 12 year old.
Plus, those of us who've been around and are serious about our business don't need to be marketed to. We'll know when your shows are, and if we don't, we'll ask. You can ignore us.
The newbies are your prime market, there's always fresh blood there. Focus your marketing on the places where they congregate. The smart ones will come, learn, and network. The ones that don't will be left by the wayside as more detritus from our business.

Lee,
What you mentioned below are marketing strategies.. what you previously mentioned , were marketing concepts...
A) Get testimonials from attendees of prior shows attesting to how big a fool you'd have to be NOT to attend. Put those at the top of page one.
B) Change your website buttons from those little arrows to big buttons with the text on them, to make it clearer where to click. I know now, because I've been to the site umpteen zillion times. But the first time, I was like, "where do I click?" :D
Very true, psychology definitely comes into play. You either want the consumer to hit and run, or you want them to stay as long as possible. The more you can get the consumer to do EXACTLY what you want him or her to do, whatever it is, the more success you will have.
OK - Marketing Gurus... how do you think The http://www.cybernetexpo.com should be promoted to attendees? Present business model.
1. Find interesting location (away from Vegas)
2. Involve interesting and successful people in workshops, hoping they offer tidbits that make it worth the price of admission.
3. Make it condusive to easy networking opportunities.
4. Direct mail to past attendees.
5. Posts on popular webmaster boards.
6. Try to get links from exhibitors.
7. Ads in webmaster publications
8. Website with information
9. Hype on the parties (which usually can't be done on a timely basis, because they are usually a last minute thing.
10. Personal emails
1) Problem to be solved? YES. I spent a day and a half looking through disorganized resource sites for a specific kind of content. BIG WASTE OF TIME.
2) Will people buy? In this case, the question is, will content providers advertise? Answer is YES, because the site caters to people who smarter than to waste time and are specifically looking for content. Target market, connected with the content provider via my site. Smart advertising for provider.
Smart Marketing - Get a prescription filled and you will be made to wait 20 mins even if they have no others script to fill so that you walk around and do impulsive buying.
Smart Marketing: Layout of Grocery store, most common needed items are on opposite sides of story forcing you to walk thru land of temptation.

Marketing 101 ;-)
Selling is in essence transference of emotion
I have to get you, my prospect to feel like I do about my product
If I am not excited about my product .... obviously I will not produce as well as someone who is
If all else fails be excited about the revenue you can generate and transfer that excitement to your prospect
Homer Simpson says "Doh!"
which is different from "Duh"
Doh: expressing chagrin or frustration, usually as a result of one's own foolishness
Duh: inviting someone to realize that they have stated the obvious
Sample dialog:
A: Hey, I just figured out 2+2=4
B: Duhhhh...
C: Ha ha
A: Doh!
Just doing my part to up the number of posts today.

Lee,
Marketing trends come and go like bad fashion.
I'm not a firm believer in "Create the NEED and fill it"
Webvan tried to create a need and fill it.
Tivo is trying to do the same, like many other examples...
It's costs to much money to create a need... doesn't mean it doesn't work.. but probably works best with OPM ; )
1. I'll stick to the 500 year marketing principle:
"Find a problem, and Solve it"
2. Secondly i'm a firm believer in, "Focus on the buy side".
I see to many people in the biz world putting all their energy on the sell side, with the proper buying the selling flows...

What did my 40K of school loans get me for my paper on the wall:
The 80's marketing concept was "Product will sell itself"
The 90's marketing concept that is still valid in the millenium:
"Create the NEED and fill it"
Pre-selling the pay site is increasing conversions, the days of banners only are gone, text links with banners or apart from banners is Ok, preselling with recommendations and "why", has excellent "cause and effect" results.
If being first and having the best product was what mattered we would all be using Macintoshes. Microsoft won the marketing war and dominates the market now. There is a lesson in there somewhere.

Grimm: "the idea that a good product will market itself is crap. Lots of good products fail because of bad marketing"
Very true. As was so eloquently stated to me by a newbie sage on another board, "if you build it, they will come." My response, improved by others on this board, "if you build it and market it properly, they will come." "If you build it, they will come" is one of the most moronic movieland sayings ever to infiltrate its way into business.
Here's a lesson from my cat... when he wants me to walk across the room and bend over, so he can jump from the other desk onto my back and then onto the top of a shelf where he likes to sleep, he doesn't sit quietly in the corner. He walks onto my desk, sits in front of my monitor so I can't see, and yells in my face. THAT'S how you get action out of a prospective customer!!!
Dravyk: "On a page of 29 animated banners, the one static banner stands out"
JR: "the person who bangs his fist on the table the loudest gets the most attention... at least in Russia."
When everyone's banging their fist on the table, the way to get attention is to use your shoe to bang louder! Not by using the Dravyk method and sitting quietly. ;D
