Back in the good old days of text based AV sites <sigh> Mondays and Tuesdays used to be my best days. I figured it was all the workerbees using the company computer to look at porn. Now that most of my hits come from AOL, the weekends are better, especially Fri and Sat nights - new and/or drunk and/or new home users ;)

something else to be taken into consideration is what page is counted as "the hit"?
some programs count first page, others second and so on...so that can be a factor...
how about sites that open a blur console that doesn't work in Netscape? or better yet, sites that crash in Netscape? how are those counted? so many factors...
also, how targeted are the licks? are they blind "Click Here" links or targeted? for example, with targeted traffic we do in the 1:100-125, but with "generic" links/traffic, we're probably closer to 1:1000-1250 range... SykkBoyniches you didn't even know you had traffic for

You just want the error to reduce towards 0 as the number of signups increases. Most webmasters would be happier to subtract one I think.

Mr.Cash been slow here, right when things started picking up, this anthrax shit kicked in and seems to have slowed things down again.
Anyone see this retard council person from Berkely on Oreilly? hahaha
She wants to use international law to go into afghanistan and apprehend the terrorists without violence. hahahahaha
As I stated earlier "This is isn't particularly rigorous but validates most data." This means, here is a quick method for those that want an order of magnitude estimate.
We can discuss the Poisson Distribution instead if you wish. Since the distance between signups (clicks) will be distributed exponentially, the Poisson Distribution is the correct model for distribution of signups.
The uncertainty in those distributions is SQRT (AVG) and that's pretty simple in and of itself.
So if you get 7/7000, the standard deviation is SQRT 7, which is +/- 2.7 (24% error)
If you get 3/7000, the SD is 1.7.
So, 3+/- 1.7 (50% error)
If you get 2/300, the SD is 1.4
So, 2 +/- 1.4 (70% error)
My method is actually quite accurate. If you think about it, it makes sense that it works pretty good. Why? Because the error depends on the number of signups more than the number of clicks. Amazing? Nope. Just makes sense.
Comparing the quick subtract 1 and divide with the results from the accurate definition will give you comparably similar results for a wide range of experiments. Also .. the error reduces to 0 accurately as signups increases. This is just what should happen. Make a big graph with the two and you'll see you'll hardly ever go wrong.

Ongoing makes sense and will eventually yield the desired information from all sides of this point...or plane to be more mathmetically correct in my speaking...
Fat Baby and others I agree on the sampling issue...and whether its a "Colin Factor" or some other method you use the more data you have the better you can manage decisions and I say that with xxxess.com winning this round in the fetish mesurments...One thing however that is very telling from a small sampling in this case is the Hit counts. Its a pretty good bet that if their shaving your hits...their shaving eleswhere too;))

Tue, 16 Oct - 18:46:59 212.3.0.34 Post #: 25359
Where the hits are coming from are as important as anything else in determining how many it takes to get an accurate sample.
If you have to send it 10k tgp clicks to get a join then you'd need way more than 10k to get a real idea.
On the other hand if you send in 100 type in or se hits to get the average join, sending 10k would be well more than you needed for a sample.
Colin: Agreed, but following the original example perhaps the probability of a "lucky" sign-up occurs every out of three per 4500 which would change that "just subtract one" part of the equation. To establish that pattern would require way more numbers in my opinion... Far-LHomegrown has been working the numbers for 20 years!

2 in 300 would be a swing from 1:150 to 1:300. From the point of view of the 300, this is 50% change. This is not good data either.
This should be from point of view of the 150 to stay consistent. So 100% swing is REAL bad.

This isn't particularly rigorous but validates most data.
Using this method .. 1 in anything will always give bad data .. which should be the case.
2 in 300 would be a swing from 1:150 to 1:300. From the point of view of the 300, this is 50% change. This is not good data either.
7 in 7000 is 1:1000. Subtract one and you have 1:1166. 15% change. Not bad.
3 in 7000 is 1:2333. Subtract one and you have 1:3500. 50% change. Bad.
Keep trying examples and this really makes sense for most things you try.

This is from an old "Ask Colin" .. not archived yet. Depends on number of hits AND ratio. 10 in 10,000 is pretty good data. 1 in 10,0000 is not. Use this trick:
----------------------------
Another mistake people commonly make is not using enough data. If a particular sponsor has converted 4500 of your visitors into 3 signups for a 1:1500 ratio, you really haven't learned that much. A little trick I sometimes use is to subtract one signup and see how much difference it makes. I think of this as "removing a lucky signup." If you had 4500 visitors and 2 signups, that would be 1:2250. That's a 50% difference (2250/1500). You need more data! If you send 10,000 visitors to a sponsor and get 10 signups, that is 1:1000. Subtract
one signup for 10,000 visitors and 9 signups, you have 1:1111. That's about a 10% difference. Not perfect but much better than the 50% example above.
There is a Thursday night football game this week so you might want to get your picks in early
I had a very lucky week - But damn it the only loss was my beloved Ravens - that's what you get when you go with your heart and not your head
Was wondering about the Statistician
Must have updated their stats
Was looking Sunday and they showed an ARS site (Ebony Pink?) as the top per click earner around .049 CPC through 15,000 or so hits.
Wondered why some sites has 15,000 or more clicks to test and some had as low as 4,000
What do you think an accurate sample would take?
20,000+ clicks over a week period?
More? Over what time period?
I heard once that you need at least 10k hits to form a good opinion of a sponsor. Does that sound about right? Bulkman

hehehe... I remember arguing abit with people backon Netpond about the value of domains. People would laugh about the, admittedly ridiculous, amounts that were being asked for on some domains. I would argue that as long as there is ONE person who is willing to pay that price then that was it's value to that one person. Kinda similar with the resource sites. As long as someoneis willing to pay X amount of dollarsfor acertainbanner spacethat's what it's worth. Might not be what it's REALLY worth but then it's not unheard of to see people pay above the real value for things that they want.

Not some nebulous out of your ass #..or ask you to buy into the "finger in the air" methodology of media buying....
-----
Almost all of the advertising we do is with companies who allow us to give feedback on the price we are paying. Yes, the price in the beginning is usually one pulled out of an ass - the choice to do business with companies at this point is easy.
I would love nothing more than to see a resource standard! So far there have been resource after resource, open up and instantly have a $$ value placed on their 'predicted traffic'. The numbers usually appear to have been taken from the last carbon copy site and pages are packed with 'advertise your link here!'
Mainstream advertising may have 'guidelines' for cost and methods of calculating that - but most of those are pulled out of asses just like webmaster resource costs!!
"We have a distribution of 10 000 magazines, therefore 10 000 eyes will see your ad now give me $xxxx"
THAT STANDARD IS CRAP! You very rarely get value out of what you pay for and yet the 'standard' tells companies to keep on advertising just in case competitor steals their ad space!!
Mainstream doesn't have their shit together that much more than the good resource sites do - they just have their bullshit down to a finer art!
I don't think we will ever see a standard until sponsors stop advertising and force it to happen - who wants to be first to remove their ads?!!
