Not some nebulous out of your ass #..or ask you to buy into the "finger in the air" methodology of media buying....
-----
Almost all of the advertising we do is with companies who allow us to give feedback on the price we are paying. Yes, the price in the beginning is usually one pulled out of an ass - the choice to do business with companies at this point is easy.
I would love nothing more than to see a resource standard! So far there have been resource after resource, open up and instantly have a $$ value placed on their 'predicted traffic'. The numbers usually appear to have been taken from the last carbon copy site and pages are packed with 'advertise your link here!'
Mainstream advertising may have 'guidelines' for cost and methods of calculating that - but most of those are pulled out of asses just like webmaster resource costs!!
"We have a distribution of 10 000 magazines, therefore 10 000 eyes will see your ad now give me $xxxx"
THAT STANDARD IS CRAP! You very rarely get value out of what you pay for and yet the 'standard' tells companies to keep on advertising just in case competitor steals their ad space!!
Mainstream doesn't have their shit together that much more than the good resource sites do - they just have their bullshit down to a finer art!
I don't think we will ever see a standard until sponsors stop advertising and force it to happen - who wants to be first to remove their ads?!!

Okay have to interrupt the resource discussion I created here for a minute to announce this:
Adult Revenue Service (http://www.adultrevenueservice.com) is proud to announce the rollout of ARS Tech 2.5. Tech 2.5 is a full re-work of the entire ARS backend system that handles hit counting and sales counting. After numerous weeks in beta testing we are pleased to roll-out this enhanced system today. Changes and updates include increased capacity and an enhanced upward scalability to better handle the increased loads experienced by the ARS Tech system. We have moved to enterprise-like data warehousing tactics to deliver gigabytes of statistical information to our webmasters in a faster, more flexible format. In addition, enhanced features have been built into ARS Tech 2.5 that will allow new, exciting features that are to be released in the upcoming month with the launch of ARS 3rd Generation. ToolzARS

Newspapers, magazines, tv, radio will give you ratings and circulation numbers.......not much different than web stats. They are no better than adult webmaster sites, mostly bullshit, but if u want your product or service noticed u just do it and cross your fingers somebody responds to your ad.
No newspaper or TV station will guarantee you any kind of productivity.
It ain't rocket science, you can tell what type of webmaster is hanging out at a particular resource site. If it's mostly traffic grunts like GFY, not going to make much sense advertising paysite content there but it makes sense for sponsors or hosting companies.

John,
Brilliant point as well, what exactly are resource sites judged on?
I introduced a pay-per click model which I implemented on the front of ARS. Those advertisers who contacted me thought the rates were outrageous. I reviewed what I pay per click based on the current resource prices and I was FAR under the competition.
My guess is resource sites will continue as long as programs have money to dump at them. Is it beneficial? Nope, but hell I don't see tons of programs looking for any return on their advertising either so why should the resource sites change?
You want a return, come talk to me, is it cheap, hell no, is it worth it, hell yes.

JohnIP, you forgot the most important standard ... TRAFFIC has its value, set at a competitive standard. All adult traffic which is traded has an approximate value but not webmaster traffic ...
But its easier to place values on these particular 'products' - they all have a measurable outcome of income vs costs.
You can measure the cost & value of a gigabyte, surfer click or content pic ... but how do you measure the value of a webmaster and for what period?
Sending a single webmaster is a possible client for a very long time for a very large volume of $$ (after all, that's what we are aiming for) - some webmasters are worth minus $xxxxxxxxxxx and some are worth plus $xxxxxxxxxx. Is there an 'average' value of a webmaster?
The only way to reach a webmaster resource 'standard' would be to measure a 'webmaster' value ... how do we do that?

Well it doesn’t take much to bait ME on this one;)))
Toolz...I agree with EVERYTHING you say...as usual your very insightful...The real issue to me though with resource sites is a lack of determined and measurable standards ...EVERY OTHER entity in this Biz has it....AND so does every media outlet in the real world...which is really what they are to and extent.
Paysites -measure down to price per click regardless of pay methodology....and are held accountable to that competitive standard by affiliates .
CC Companies-measure by transactions cost...% of sales and conversion performance and are held accountable to competitive standards.
Hosting Companies-Measure by price per gig and cost of service ...and are held to competitive standards.
Content Companies-Measure by price per member and quality of product and service and are held to competitive standards.
Webmaster resources-HAVE NO shared measured standards..present little or NO data to justify the cost of their product ...begrudgingly present potential customers with enough data to make informed buying decisions...AND don’t present ANY active public competitive pricing arguments..Can you imagine if SPONSORS did that!!!..Its doomed to failure because it doesn’t follow a capitalistic model;)
Resource sites need to GET TO WORK..if they wanna survive(That ones for you Serge;)))

Oh no, Serge is baiting me out for the impending resource discussion.
Okay here's my .02 and you're right we have advertised damn near everywhere avail.
#1 Key, TRACK your advertising, use your own methods to track it, not the traffic of a counter on a board. This is insane, if anyone judges the effectiveness of their advertising based on the board's counter they need mental help.
#2. There's essentially two types of webmaster advertising; name recognition/branding and acquisition of new webmasters. Which one are boards most succesful at? Depends on the board/resource site, some can deliver signups, others your just there so people don't forget your name.
Now granted this is probably gonna get buried in b.s. retoric today but I think there's a good point in there somewhere.

Forest you are a fool.
The stats you are referring to are SexCounter's, Nick says the counter was on the fritz AND the most important thing is that you are talking about Oprano's INDEX front page. Do you think all webmasters are morons like you? People of normal intelligence type in this URL to hit this board http://www.oprano.com/msgboard.
And speaking of Oprano's index page, it's a nice deal for advertisers BECAUSE it's all first time visitors who haven't bookmarked this URL yet.
A totally independent non adult company tracks stats for this board.
Netscape. Heard of them?
Now here's a challenge. Ask your buddies on any other board if they will let you install a Netscape counter on their board, pick a day,
I will put up a thousand bucks against the board of your choice if u will do the same.
Should be easy money for you Forest.

Forest what the hell are you talking about?
If you're going to post stats please have the stones to post where they come from so intelligent people can
come to their own conclusion.
Dude stop fumbling around in the dark flailing like a mental patient.
Oprano's stats are stellar and beyond reproach.

DMOZ is what caused me to have content after 2 years in the biz :( I hate making DMOZ sites, but there are bills to be paid.
Serge - I get traffic from AOL, Netscape and Google that pull from the DMOZ directory. Probably some other small ones, but these are the biggest.
OK, I've NEVER done TGP's. But obviously, with the TGP2 revolution, I need to change my wicked ways ;) However, I'm more autistic than artistic (ask any DMOZ editor - they can spot my sites from a mile away ;)). Are there any GOOD gallery maker software programs out there and/or webmasters that will build sites for a decent fee? I have content out the ying-yang, so I'm OK there - but if the internet was ruled by me, all websites would be white with black Times Courier font :))

Serge,
yes it is sad. The world of the people relying on the SEs has changed dramatically with this shift to the DMOZ/AOL world. People who depended on SEs suddenly had to stop analyzing and start making galleries. Remember the good ol' "Click here for.." pages? These days, sooo much content is given away.
I think what you posted earlier is a sign. The webmasters who are going to thrive today, are not going to be holding their eggs in one basket. They may have tgp2 projects and SE projects. They probably will have more than one main sponsor, just in case of shaving/parties/processing, etc.
but the main thing is that the new webmasters who will succeed, will look for new ideas, and may be better able to handle change than old ones.

Serge,
the main usage for DMOZ is to get to the AOL traffic. Since these are supposedly the "freshest", least savvy surfers, and also free to submit to, it grew like mad.

Colin, thanks for the breakout on the #'s - am guessing you are posting that in a few places so if the lightbulb(s) haven't went on yet they will
Toolz, makes perfect sense
What we have said all along, who is going to buy it when it's free in abundance
As always the market will be dictated by what earns the most revenue
TGP1's will fall by the wayside (in time) like dinosaurs as TGP2 is more profitable and TGP1 no longer earns revenue due to supporting all the porn freeloading, bandwidth sucking, no credit card pulling out of pockets leeches
