I can't knock a college education. It might not be for everyone, it might not give you what you want, but I've seen it change people's lives. As with everything, you get out of it what you put into it not what it gives you.
I think the average 18 year old would be better off attending college than working. Both is always an option. I attended school full time, worked full time, played in a band, and took care of my daughter.
Now we are in 2001 - can you make some predictions for 2003??

Geeky .. this is also me. @ 1996.
I am a high school dropout. I I am also a graduate of Yale University. I have never received a high school diploma nor have I taken a GED examination.
I had to endure much more than most Yalies to earn that diploma. In order to survive my senior year at Yale I had to go through a mid-semester divorce and having my daughter taken from me. I spent much of that year getting drunk, stoned, and dropping acid. Somehow I also managed to receive a few research grants and run a computerized model of the solar system for 250 million years, one of the longest such computations ever done.
I am sure that in high school I appeared to be nothing more than an average student. It is doubtful that any of my teachers remember me. Once, when I was back home for the summer after my junior year at Yale, I ran into someone whom I hadn't seen since high school woodshop class. He asked what I was doing and I told him that I was going to
college and that I was a physics major. His reply? "You didn't seem like the type." Another time this girl I vaguely remembered walked up to me in a mall and asked me if I was the guy who sat in her history class always writing music. Yep. That was me.
I did not grow up with the idea that I might go to college someday. I thought that only rich kids went to college. Contrast this with one of my friends from college whose parents were upset because she decided to go to Yale instead of Harvard. I'm not sure what's worse; growing up with the idea that you have to be rich to go to college or growing up feeling you HAVE to go to college. They both have their difficulties.
So how can one drop out of high school and get into Yale? In brief, you start at a community college, work real hard, and transfer. Of course it's a lot more complicated
than that. I'll cover the details some other time.
People often tell me that they don't have the potential to go to an Ivy League School. Potential? I don't get it. I've had this same argument so many times it sickens me. Most people seem to think you are either born with the ability to do something or you can forget about it. "Mechanically inclined... Mathematically inclined." Makes me wanna puke. There just ain't no goddamn gene that decides whether you'll be able to install a light switch or not. If one understands the proper paradigm for learning something they'll be able to do it. It's just that the paradigm for learning mathematics and say, history are different. If you're having trouble learning calculus you need to change your method - find out how people who are succesful at mathematics go about it. Many of them will tell you something but it won't be true. Introspection is a difficult business. People like to make their thought processes seem more esoteric than they actually are.
Success in life has nothing to do with this mythical potential. When you apply to a college or for a job only a very small portion of you is reflected in the application. College admissions offices know your grades and standardized scores, have a writing sample, and the opinion of a few high school teachers. They make an admissions decision based upon very limited criteria - criteria which one has a great deal of control over.
It's thought by many people that standardized tests measure the ability of an individual to achieve in that particular area. This is far from the truth. The only thing that
they measure is what the test-taker has already learned. To prepare for the SAT, I bought one of those Barron's Books that have 10 practice tests in them. I took all 10 tests
twice each over a period of two weeks or so. When I began my scores were around 1100. When I finished they were about 1300. My actual SAT result? 1310.
Every area of a college application can be attacked in this same way. Admissions officers are looking for specific things in the essay, for example. You score points for
creativity, community contributions, and drive among other things. Want proof? Call your local college and ask to interview an admissions officer. If you write about something you're intense about you're bound to score big. Save the world factor? Easy. If you can write HTML start an organization that teaches senior citizens how to start their own homepage. Start a chess club. Start a poetry-reading club. Start a group that matches high school students with community business leaders. Steal someone else's idea. Keep records. Take pictures. Put it on the WEB. Make it an essay.
The title of this essay is "Ignoring the System." It could just as easily have been entitled "Ignoring the Rest of the World" or something like that. What I mean by The System is the system of thought which is forced upon us from childhood. The relentless pressure of society upon each and every one of us to conform. "Be one of us" the voices say. I remember when I was younger that my father always placed a high value on a high school education. We are force-fed this idea from the media constantly. Look at all the high school dropouts. Isn't it horrible. Well, no. Let them find their own way in the world. I don't find saying that such a horrible thing because I know they're not being taught anything in school and their time is being wasted anyhow. But that's the next essay.

"I've been thinking lately of a strange position I find myself in. Even though my income level is pretty high (even for this business) I don't think it matters. I would give up every dollar I've made and am currently making to be
able to maintain 1.) The knowledge I have and 2.) The contacts I've made.
Well, that should be pretty self evident. Don't worry about making a dollar today so much as what you will make in the future.
All of us have the opportunity to secure our financial future over the next few years .. Who will and who won't?
And if you're one of those that won't/didn't .. why not?
.. still working on the "empire" here .. started with $50 just about a year ago and now have 3 full time employees and one part. I'm only know just BEGINNING to figure out how to maximize (??) productivity from workers.
Not "tooting my horn" .. well, maybe a little but only to make a few points ..
1. It's not necessary to work a lot of hours. The biggest increases in income I've had from this are the result of a few minutes work .. one strong idea which takes a few minutes to execute .. a new sponsor .. more sponsors ..
doubling the size of a site, etc. "busy" work can be handled by either computer program or hiring out someone to do it.
Don't have the cash on hand to get computer programs or employees?
Loans, cc cards, friends, family .. spend money now to make more $$ later.
2. Reinvest your money. Hell, I manage my money horribly spending it on all kinds of stupid things that I don't need.
But I reinvest in the right things to keep me floating til the effect of new money wears off .. manpower
(womanpower i guess .. no male employees) .. programs to increase their (and my) effectiveness.
3. Figure out what REALLY works. e.g. What works better .. banners or text links? is it better to spend time on search engine registrations or link trades? Is trading traffic within your own network of sites effective? How do
you measure whether it is? What makes a sponsor banner pull well on one site and not another?
well, i'm running outta gas .. hope someone eats this pill before we all turn into crazy pumpkin driving old maids that smell like black bananas and molasses. Mom says hi.

Would have answered sooner Serge but had some personal stuff to attend to...
Look here... http://www.aclu.org/action/usa107.html I realize privacy is essentially a thing of the past... BUT how, when, where, and why information can be used is still VERY important. Each one of the proposals that they are advocating give the government more power over ORDINAARY Americans and not just terrorists. What do you think will happen once the hysteria settles down and they have these expanded powers with almost NO supervision and they come a knocking on the net? From what Rep. Bob Barr has said it allows all of this stuff for other areas of the law as well on some type of rider to the bill that is supposed to be temporary but almost always becomes permanent. The tools have ALWAYS been there to get the job done. Theoretically if this stuff passes and is expanded they could do warrantless searches with no oversight by the court system at all. Do you trust people with that kind of power? I don't. That goes for any AG, not just Ashcroft. There needs to be oversight to protect citizens from an overzealous government. Checks and balances are there for a reason and to take them away is an invitation for government abuse.

The contract still states that we must be primary. But it sounds like your concern is that we would stop processing your recurring if you switched processors??? We would absolutely not stop processing your recurring if you pointed signups elsewhere, this would only hurt us both.
And, no, we do not stipulate who and who not to use as secondary.

as depressing and scary as this all is that picture of Bert is funny. It doesn't surprise me that Bert would turn out to be an agent of terror, a 'sleeper'. Look at him. Who here knew he was even Muslim? Take a look at his skin ...er felt..coloring. Dark bushy eyebrows.
FBI is investigating now with the help of the Childrens Television Workshop and PBS. "Bert" entered the United States in 1962 on a student visa as "Kahmal Akbarazi", he studied floral arranging at the Toledo School of Floral Design. He dropped out of the program and dropped out of sight. It was believed he had returned to the Sudan. Now we know different.

JMScore,
Ok, so are you saying you guys are no longer putting wording in your contracts regarding selection of secondary processors? I have one from earlier this year that definitely does. If that's gone now, then that's great!
However, you side stepped the whole issue of being primary only.
Does that mean Jettis does not want to be a secondary processor or does it mean if you're not primary you wont process anything at all?
If you do not want to be a secondary, I'm cool with that. However, if I opt to point the join pages at someone else for whatever reason, I do not want to put an existing recurring base at risk.
I'm sure you guys are solid, but way back in 1997 so was a company called Epoch. That's not saying you guys will inevitably fall apart or anything, it's just that the only thing that stays the same in this industry is change. And for me personally, I wont sign a contract that limits my ability to maneuver and roll with the punchs.
1) do we in the US have too much freedom to ever really be safe from terrorist attacks? Do we need a little more control from the gov't like say, the USSR, used to have?
2) how much do we need to do to try to "fix" our "image" in the middle east?

What's to stop the government from selling the information it has to private interests? Don't tell me that you think that government never sells out to corporations.
So, if private corps have all that information, about where you live, work and how much you make, they could use it to keep on tracking you. Has he visited a doctor, dentist, escort service? Then they'll pound on your ass trying to sell you stuff and denying you health care or other forms of insurance.
Not a good idea, imo.
