Anyway .. the thing about being good teacher .. it's hard to explain .. it's not about what you know ..
though that helps.

It's about being incredibly flexible as to what is going to happen that day. It's about analyzing what the class needs on the fly and making sure that withing 55 minutes they get what they need that day.

One day .. Break the class into groups .. one group finishes fast, break that group up .. and have each student from the fast group help the students in the slower groups. Then take someone from the class and put them on the board. Have THEM teach something to the class. Have them work out a problem and explain it. Ask them to generalize the case. Motivate the best students to be brighter. Motivate the slowest to WANT to be the best and make sure no one in the middle gets lost in the shuffle.

Thinking on your feet .. teach them that what they learn is powerful. That it will get them somewhere in the world. A class ALWAYS wants to know why they need to learn something. Every teacher should KNOW the answer before they go in the first day. When they ask, and they will, when they nod their head in agreement, they are hooked.

Colin, I think there's a problem. I don't know if it was the same at your university, but when I want to school the 'uninspired' students seemed to gravitate toward education, mainly primary level education. A woman going to college and majoring in elementary ed. was said to be going for her 'MRS' degree :)

Some teachers are motivated and brilliant, and are teaching because they have a genuine gift for it, but my feeling is that most of the teachers we have working today are teachers because it was one of the easiest degrees you could get. The real performers went into engineering, law or medicine..

I'll try.

Historically, 'conservative' refers to those who would oppose any change in government or the ethos of the country. Progressive refers to those who adapt to a changing environment.

In practice, conservatism always leads to the stamping out of dissent. Progressives, since they're dealing with new solutions to new problems, are open to dissent and disagreement and operate thru compromise between opposing factions, which is the very bedrock of our system.

Conservatives are always flag and country type of guys, more loyal to the symbols of government than to the actual processes that make our government unique.

Vick,

I really don't know. I'm another of those that points out that maybe there is a problem and doesn't have the solution but hopes that by continuing to point the problem will be solved.

I'm not even sure I would say that there IS a problem. I mean, someone DOES have to work at McDonald's. The occasional error in my change does not really upset me THAT much. We seem to have more mathematicians than a country needs already.

US Society seems to get by just fine even though plenty of US citizens can't point out a map of Mexico or Canada.

If we're going to try something .. I think .. mostly, we need to experiment and see what happens. We need to get people open to the idea of an education experiment. Let's try evaluating teachers by standardized tests and see what happens. It might take a while before everything evens out. It might not even work. Who knows? Why are we so stuck on the status quo?

Parents? Obviously an important factor but realistically some parents aren't equipped to handle the education of their children beyond a certain point.

This is what I learned from one year of teaching. Any student, no matter what background, what their parents are like, what they perceive their ability is, whatever .. can work at "A" level and understanding with proper teaching.

I subbed half a year (daily) and then took over a class for half a year. I was a daily sub for one school in particular in Orlando.
Someone's always absent.

I learned more about teaching while subbing than while just running the one class. A kid with a "18" average in algebra can score a "100" on a test with only two classes of instruction.

It's difficult to explain how to do this.

More in a minute ...

Dig, here is where we fundamentally disagree. My vision of conservatism is self reliance. My view of liberalism is of government curing all ills. My view on schools is that parents need to do more while the liberal view seems to be the government needs to do more. It's a difference in philosophies not a battle of good vs. evil.

First, I'd like to thatnk Mike for my T-shirts. My boyfriend confiscated the Bin Laden shirt, which is fine since you sent me a small. (that wouldn't make it over one boob.) But the Oprano shirt fits great. Thanks a bunch.

In regards to school vouchers. Allow me to give a parent's perspective. My daughter, who is now 22, has Ausbergers Syndrome, a form of high functioning autism. Throughout school she had been classified as learning disabled. I had her in private school until 3rd grade, when I could no longer afford it and she was then in public school special ed until she graduated high school. I spent those years fighting with the public school system, in and out of court, to get the school district to pay for her private schooling. Unfortunately, the school district will only do this if the teachers admit that they can not teach the student. Since the schools receive twice as much money per special ed students as they do for mainstream, they will never admit this. With the support of the parents of children with learning disabilities group I continued to fight right up until they graduated her from high school with the mental ability of an 8 year old. This was pretty much standard for all the parents in the group. I would have given anything for a voucher to send her to a private school that would have given her the education she needed.

With the exception of Communism, which is a progressive idea almost always carried out by conservative methodology, this theory has yet to be disproven.

How do we accurately measure teacher performance?
By students results on standardized tests? (can hear the screaming about that already)
How much their students improve learning skills while under their tutelage?
Rating by teacher's peers or supervisors?
By student's grades? (not too good as the teacher gives the grades)

I would have to do a little reading to give a definitive answer on that, but my best guess would be the administration b4 the defection of the southern Democrats to the republican party.

They bolted over racial politics, brought a very nasty element to the GOP which basically formed the party as it exists today.

Ulfie, my $25 billion point was only an illustration of Dig's hypocrisy (although we are working on becoming friends anyway). Dig says the Republican Party has never had any good viewpoints. They are totally worthless as a political party. I say he is nuts. Even the craziest people have worthy ideas.

I think, given his political stance, that he liked Bush' $25 billion education proposal .. especially the part where "The largest portion of the money would go to a reading program and to a college grant program for low-income students."

Sounds like a very traditionally Democratic proposal to me.

btw, I will also fully admit that private schools put out better students because the PARENTS are forking out a lot of dough therefore they are going to take a much more active roll in their kids education.

I am also against vouchers because I don't want the feds involved with private schools. Grove City College is a perfect example here. They don't take a dime in government money and they are free to set their admission policies any way they want. That's something the voucher crowd needs to keep in mind.

Ulfie,

You don't burst mine. What state are you in? PA? Average starting salary: 29k. I'm not worried about average salary, it's average starting salary that matters.

Higher starting salaries will attract better quality teachers. My school friends all took quant-jock jobs on Wall Street making $45k/ first year. Up to $100k/3rd year.

Contrast that with average US starting teacher salary of $22k.

If public school could have paid me $45k first year and $100k/ 3rd, I would have stayed a teacher. The world would have been a better place. :)

The question is how do you attract the best and brightest to teach? What can we learn from early 20th century Hungary and German Gymnasium? Germany had their brightest researchers teaching in Gymnasium.

Colin, wasn't accusing anyone here of that. That's the way politicians work though. They sign some grand bill and say "We just increased education spending by $25 billion." When in reality there is absolutely no plan for what to do with the money. The local school district gets it and they end up using it for such worthwhile purposes as building new scoreboards for the football team or puting new carpet in the teachers lounge. That was my point. Private schools don't have that luxary of getting random bonuses when some politician wants some votes therefore they spend money wisely.

I love the argument that we should just dump more money into public schools and that will make them better. The private high school I graduated spends about $3k/student on each kids education. That's less than half of what the public schools here spend. The results, the public high school that I would have went to sent 32% of their students on to higher education. The private school I went to sent 100% of their students of to college. Schools like Harvard, Yale, Bucknell (my alma mater), Lehigh, CMU, etc.

My point is that throwing more money into a rathole isn't going to improve the situation. You want to improve schools:
1) base teacher pay on performance.
2) eliminate tenure
3) require teachers to be recertified

Of course, these things will never happen because of the unions but that would be an immediate step in the right direction to improve schools that costs absolutely nothing.

Man our public schools need help, they don't need money taken AWAY from them right now.

And Dig, your claim is that Republicans use these tactics and Democrats don't? 100 million Republicans. 100 million Democrats. Why do you think the Republicans are all cheaters?

You asked "Can anyone tell me the last time that a conservative political party was right on ANY major issue?"

I answered that "Bush proposed to increase federal spending on education by an additional $25 billion over the next five years. The largest portion of the money would go to a reading program and to a college grant program for low-income students."

Then you say "Well, they used tactics to sabotage their own bill"

First you asked the question. I answer. Then you change the rules of the game. You cheated! Your hypocrisy knows no bounds. if you are representative of Democarats, I don't need to know anymore!

Next thing you'll do is tell me that Democrats are better people than Republicans.

Dig, - "I signed up just for the fuck of it already" is that true? As in you have already done a hitch or just signed up recently?

Maybe you can explain this to me
"The problem with vouchers is that it will further concentrate money spent on education in affluent areas, predominantly private schools and public institutions in high income school districts. "

While everyone should have equal access to a good education (truthfully you TAKE an education, one is not given to you) why do you feel the money will end up in affluent school districts when a portion of the funds are earmarked for college grant programs for low-income students

I understand the vouchers are for parents who send or want to send their children to private schools

Colin, that's exactly what I'm talking about.. I'm not referring to a conspiracy. This is a very common, even prevalent tactic in D.C. Want to make a proposal but you don't want it to pass? Attach a poison pill amendment to it and kill it. Then you can say 'hey I did my part for education, it was those damn (insert enemy here) who killed the bill.'

The problem with vouchers is that it will further concentrate money spent on education in affluent areas, predominantly private schools and public institutions in high income school districts.

The last thing we need in this country is an even angrier, LESS educated lower class. That's how revolutions get started and we don't need a revolution.

Vick - if the war was just they wouldn't NEED to draft me. I signed up just for the fuck of it already, I know what it's like to wear the uniform, do you?

If the war was unjust, drafting me would be pointless. I'm not killing anybody who doesn't need killing and that's that.

Dig,

At Yale Commencement 2001, after joking "And to you 'C' students, you too can be president of the United States" ..which I'm sure you heard on the news .. Bush stated that he was grateful for his Yale experience, saying the university is a source of great pride for him. "All universities, at their best, teach that degrees and honors are far from the full measure of life, nor is that measure taken in wealth or in titles," Bush said. "What matters most are the standards you live by, the consideration you show others, and the way you use the gifts you are given."

This I must agree with.

I don't see Evils of the Republican party as any worse than Evils of the Democratic party.

I am neither.

I have been supportive of each administration of my adult life:
Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush.

I don't see an administration as Republican or Democratic. I see a President, The Cabinet, The House, and Congress. A system of checks and balances that in my opinion works as intended.

Colin, I don't have an 'official position' on anything, but in this era the Democrats are indeed the party that most often acts responsibly.

All you really have to do to see who the good guys are is find out which party dislikes academics. If they scorn education and dislike 'uppity' college professors, you can be pretty sure that you have found the organization pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Books: Let's see, programming and technical manuals... lot's of those.

Non fiction: PJ O'Roarke's Eat the Rich, very funny and lighthearted look at the serious business of economics and such. The humor really helps to make the points.

Fiction: Just about anything from C.J Cherryh - I am a sci-fi type, what can I say? I am sometimes amazed by writers that can not only create characters, but create a universe for them. The entire downbelow series is worth the buy.

Colin, I AM biased.

Reagan took out a HUGE volume of short term, high interest loans to fund his pet projects and sent the economy into a tailspin that ultimately derailed George Bush. Not to mention he actively carried on a secret war in Nicaragua, circumventing the will of the American people as expressed thru Congress and our democratic system of decision making.

Did I mention he was senile while still in office?

Oliver North committed TREASON and you guys still love him, you crack me up LOL!! He should have been hung.

luddite in common parlance refers to someone who is PROUDLY ignorant. Like someone who ignores the fact that as United States citizens we have not just the right, but the OBLIGATION to act according to our conscience. If your country sent you to take over Texas, would you go?

To think that Nixon was a good guy and the Hippies were the villains.. man that just speaks to so much willful evilness that I wouldn't even know how to go about enlightening you except to ask that you PLEASE PLEASE read a book. Can anyone tell me the last time that a conservative political party was right on ANY major issue?

Sufferage - Nope
WW II - Nope
Vietnam - Nope
Civil Rights - Nope
Emancipation - Nope

I don't hate any man (still living), but people who identify with Nixon and McCarthy more than Roosevelt, man, I just don't understand your thought processes.
