I just read Founding Brothers, I guess I am on an American Revolution kick.

William Burrows, he was just so fucked up yet unmatched in style...

I also have a softspot for Stephen King because I don't view him so much as a horror writer as a great storyteller and his stories have horrific events...of course I'd have to include Clive Barker. "Imagica" is still one of my favorite reads if not one of the hardest reads...his stuff is just so far out there, yet there's a lot of humility and depth in even his most minor of chracters...

A fantastic essayist. I recommend any book of his. An incredibly clear writer and thinker that challenges not only common conceptions but his own arguments. He frequently points out the weaknesses of his own arguments.

Taz, I agree we will have some casualties if/when the ground war begins. There is no doubt, this is not Dessert Storm, or the Baltics.

While we don't have the same goals as the Soviets did, we will encounter some of the same problems they did. To think we won't ship bags home from a ground war is naive. We will be fighting against troops we trained ourselves. Troops which blend into and know the country side. Who's a terrorist or Taliban supporter and who's a civilian? Will our troops be able to think of that 12 year old boy as the enemy? The targets won't all be wearing uniforms and labels in this one either. Any type of ground action will place our troops into the same type of basic environment as Vietnam did along with the same paradox's that were encountered there.

To think we also don't care who winds up in control of that country is also naive. If the new government doesn't have the correct political mix it could throw the whole region into even greater chaos. In order to reach the goals stated by the US, the end of the threats of terrorism, a delicate political balancing act must be maintained for the long term success of that mission.

I have been to St. Petersburg ( Petrograd, Leningrad) and found it to be a beautiful city. I saw palaces, gardens and churches that compaired to anything I have seen anywhere. many of these building have gone through a lot in WWII.

I have not been to Turkey, but at one time the Turks were involved with the Byzyntine Empire, and of course before WWI was a world class power which controled most of the middle east.

Each of these countries have a tremendous history, and you would be wise to learn more abuot it before speaking like a typical ignorant American tourist.

I beleive there is no country better the the USA, but to understand what makes us great you have to understand the realities of what is around you - not what you imagine in your small mind, or what you have read in your local newspaper.

Taz I do not think we will have the same problems as the Russians. We have learned from their mistakes, and unlike Russia we do not want to control the country - we could give a care less about who controls the country, as long as its not the Taliban.

On top of this, our military has far more capabilities then the Russians did, the Russians were also having to fight against troops being trained and supplied by America and other nations. There will be no one sending supplies and weapons to the Taliban. Our goals are limited and defined... we will meet them and move on.

Well, let's see, our military has run out of targets to bomb, there weren't many in the first place. Now we're looking at ground troops, which of course Osama is counting on. This course of action is what he bases the statement, that they defeated the Soviet army and will defeat the US army, forgetting to mention that they had US assistance in that. I think he's counting on US public opinion to change course once the bags start coming home, based on our response to various recent military campaigns. Creating the same type of chaos within our own ranks as we previously witnessed would only further his cause to unite the various Islamic factions behind the appearance of US weakness.

The mistake he may have made is in assuming that the US will have that same reaction once again. It seems, from various polls, that the country is ready to accept the fact that troops will not make it home alive as a consequence of ending the threat of terrorism. While we as a country have always squabbled amongst ourselves, our very nature and the freedoms we enjoy have always caused us to respond to threats as a whole. He placed the fight on a different level by attacking civilians on our own turf and I don't think he took into account the "nobody screws with my family but me" mentality of the US.

I think short-term, we have to be ready for anything in terms of restrictions. For those discussing martial law, FEMA was called into effect by Bush on Sept 13, so we're already in a state of national emergency. If that's what it takes, shortterm, to protect the population, then it needs to be done.

Unfortunately I guareentee that the restrictions that Ashcroft wants WILL NOT be only limited to outsiders here in the USA. I am not a fan of Rep. Bob Barr in the least but in this I am very much inclined to side with him Sawhim on SEVERAL shows where he had corrected the commentators in their assumption that US citizens wouldn't have their rights abridged by the gov't.

There was VERY wide broad based support for not allowing Ashcroft to get what he wanted. That alone should tell you quite a bit about the Ashcroft proposal.
