Firstly, to call tactical nukes a "nuke" is to draw up visions of H bombs, and that's not accurate. What they do is use the strength of the bunker against itself. It'll pancake the structure (sound familiar?) and either kill those inside or flush them into the open, where the bombs and/or troops can handle them.

Tactical nukes would also sharply decrease the civilian casualty count.

As for the Saudis, they're not financing bin Laden in the least. In fact, he was long ago disowned by the whole family. That said, they're still hardly democratic, and some of their number participate in genital mutilation of infant girls (as do all of the Taleban), but no, they don't send him money.

Most of the Muslim countries are 80% behind us, they simply can't say so for fear of their own fundamentalist aspect turning against them.

"isms" are always the problem -- be it communism, fundamentalism, liberalism, conservatism. Whenever you hand in your right to change your mind and part company with an "ism", imho, you become the monster against which we're fighting.

As for rights of citizens and non-citizens, we surely have to do whatever is necessary to safeguard our citizens first. Some abstract fundamental of open Americanism won't mean squat if we're all piles of carbon in its wake. That said, we can't let our own reactionaries start taking over and closing ranks against people just because they're from a different culture originally. I think any rational person has to embrace the *rational* application of racial profiling while we're in a war footing, but there's also a need for reason in such circumstances.

A bit off topic, but: A few weeks ago I was sitting in traffic court with my son (his ticket - not mine <s>). First of all, they have an entire different court room for spanish speaking defendants. OK - since there were about 30 out of the total of around 50, this made some sense. Then they were going through the phase where you plead your case. A young fellow - 20's - plead "Guilty". The judge asked him if he realized that pleading guilty would put him in jail and he'd lose his license. The kid nodded, but had an odd look on his face. The judge asked again if he understood. Again the kid said yes. The judge asked him if he spoke English and he said "Not really" and the judge asked him what his language was and it was Indonesian. More small banter back and forth. Finally, the judge told the kid to tell him he wanted a continuance and told the kid to get an attorney and come back. I kept wondering just how that same scenario would have been played out if it were MY kid in an Indonesian court.......I'm betting it would be a LOT different.

I am not saying we should mistreat non-citizens, but there ability for due process, and other Consitutional rights should be limited by the Federal Gov't, at least in critical times like we are in now.

1. There are 7.5 MILLION Afghans in danger of starving right now. Bush had 32,000 rations dropped. This is about as much food as can feed one refugee camp in one day. If Bush wants to overthrow the Taliban he will have drop enough food for millions to survive.

2. The 911 attack illustrates the folly of "Missile Defense". The idea is that some "rogue nation" will launch a missile at the US. However, the US will know wherever the missile is launched; i.e., it cannot be done anonymously. So, what's more likely, a crazed nation-state that desires suicide launching a missile attack at the US? Or, some crazed lunatics decide to commit the same kind of random, nearly anonymous terrorism we've seen before? (BTW, Russian Prez Vladimir Putin has been warning Bush for years about the dangers of domestic terrorism versus the kind that Missile Defense supposedly protects us Yanks from. These warnings, like many others, were ignored.)

3. Finally, there is absolutely no reason for the US to be continuing the economic sanctions over Iraq. They are strengthening, not weakening Saddam Hussein's reign on power. They have killed a million Iraqi civilians including half a million children. They are medieval; the most severe post-war sanctions in human history. Throw in the likelihood that they are manufacturing the kind of hatred that results in grown men deciding that it is worth killing themselves in order to commit terrible crimes to fight what they perceive to be the Great Satan it seems like a good idea for us to discontinue them. In my opinion we may be at war with Iraq soon. However, it isn't wise for us to be continuing our war with Iraqi civilians. The sanctions don't make sense militarily or morally.

However, I will say that I noticed an interesting trend in the media the last few weeks.

About 10 days ago, before anyone spoke about anyone having antrax in Florida, there were big discussions and time spent in newspapers and on TV discussing chemical weapons. Look what has happened.

This weekend, I noticed alot of discussion regarding tactical nukes and their uses (especially the one that makes a shockwave that can collapse caves and underground bunkers).

Say what you will about a free press, I think the administration is using the news media to soften the public up to accepting that these things will happen. I am sure that they used the media in the Anthrax situation to get people "over it" before it happened, to avoid panic. I think the discussion of tactical nukes is throwing up a trial balloon to see how the public reacts - and if the reaction isn't negative, then they will pull them out and use them as they see fit.

Todd I am not advocatin nuking anyone now, but I would be willing to in clear sistuations as I noted before. No attila the hun. What would we face in the future? I have NO doubts that if Bin laden, Saddam, or any other terrorist had nukes they would have been used already.

Now to Truman, we knew Nuclear weapons worked, we tested them on our own soil before we did on the Japaneese. We used it to save American lives, when on small islands like Iwo Jima we had hundreds of thousansd of casualties - and saw the Japs fought till the death.

Truman also wanted to show a sign to the Russiand as well, there are many reasons that they were deployed, and I think are justified.

I heard stories from men who fought in Europe, and who fought the island campaigns in the pacific when they heard about the use of Nukes they thanked God.

Hirsoshima and Nagasaki being bombed saved 500,000+ American lives... and probably saved millions of Japanesse lives. The sooner one can end a war, we have an obligation to do so.

Funny Colin, I have never been a liberal... of course there are no parties that completely represent all of my views. I think that is part of the problem with modern politics.

Conservative is hardly a description for me, at least in the modern sense. In the classical sense I might be considered Conservative, but I doubt many people understand what this means.

My views are like a majority of Americans... Conservative on fiscal and economic issues, more laize faire market economics. I tend to be more of a libertarian when it comes to social issues. Which I think gov't should stay out of peoples personal lives, AS well as their checkbooks.

And on foreign policy I beleive in Real Politick, which is that the Nation needs protect its interests around the world.

I have been watching the news conference at the white house. Reporters are so stupid, they keep asking questions dealing with operation of our military, of course he is not going to give away specific information now. Then they get frustrated, and repackage the same question and are suprised when the get the same NO answers.
