Good points JR, and I would also add the emotional toll the shooter would go through if shooting someone.
A friend of mine shot an intruder in his honme and even though the courts declared it self-defense, to this very day (about 12 years now) he still struggles with the thought he took a human life. He had nightmares for quite some time after that. That's something else to consider when pulling that trigger... SykkBoymore deranged stuff yet to come

you know Serge, it was one of those situations where if i would ask any person what they would do... they would all answer the same "of course i would shoot him!"
it is just not that easy. if i did not know him, i probably would have shot him without any problems. Even the police asked me why i did not shoot him, since i was backed against a wall and he was coming at me with a knife.
the point was, i should have never pulled the gun out because it almost got ME killed. the only reason i did not take the knife from him sooner was once i had the gun in my hand, i knew i could never let it go without the risk of him getting ahold of it. i created a bad situation.
it was a bad thing. i would NEVER recommend anyone to have a gun unless you know for a fact you are ready to kill someone? and quite simply, without already having the experience of killing someone, you will never know until that moment comes.

_____________________________
i was living with a girl when her recently ex boyfriend broke into the house at 3am and decided to "talk"
she went to talk to him, he started knocking her around. she ran upstairs and ran into her room and locked the door. i came out of my room as he was trying to open her door. I put my arm on his shoulder and said "Sean, c'mon, lets all calm down and go downstairs and talk calmly and work this out"
it was dark, i could not see anything. but i felt the knife as he pushed it into my stomach and said "fuck you, i am gonna kill you too (too, implying that he was going to kill her)"
he was high on coke, depressed and in one of those "if she wont have me... no one will have her" kind of moods.
i immediatly backed away and apologized and at the same time, he opened the door to her room. i had a .357 within arms reach in the hall closet... but not loaded. I grabbed the gun and began loading it and he walked back out of the room and saw me. He just looked at me blankly and said "you dont have the balls to do it... now your dead"
i calmly said "Sean, you have really crossed the line, you need to leave right now... or i am going to shoot you". i was back against the wall and in a corner.
He just looked at me coldly and said "fuck you, pull the trigger" as he lunged at me with the knife. Even in that situation, i could not pull the trigger... just put my thumb in front of the hammer and pulled the trigger and hit him over the head, knocking him out.
as i sat there for a second trying to come to my senses and understand if was a dream or really happening, he woke up immediately and tried to stab me. i grabbed the hand with the knife and was trying to subdue him and we ended up on the floor. he was trying to get the gun and trying to stab me at the same time. that was one of the most difficult moments in my life... I had him locked up, but he would not stop and it was just a matter of time before he got loose from my hold.
i had to decide if i was going to let him possibly get the gun, stab me... or i was going to just shoot him.
i begged him to stop before i was forced to kill him. he just kept telling me he was going to kill me.
in the end, i still could not shoot him. i hit him over the head with enough force that it bent the barrel on a Smith and Wesson .357 with a 5 1/4" barrell. again, he was unconscious. I took the knife and threw it... but what could i do with the gun? if he got it, he would try to shoot me. As soon as he opened his eyes, i clocked him again over the head. i repeated this process for several minutes until the police arrived.
I am 5 10" 190, and have a black belt in Go Ju Ryu Karate, have boxed and studied other styles of karate over the years. i am not a pussy and there was a time when i loved to fight. But i learned at that point that i was not a killer, though my initial reaction was to grab the gun and shoot him.
i learned that pulling out a weapon without having the determination to use it without hesitation... was not smart, it was suicide.
the problem guns is that there is only one truth... you may think you are tough, but unless you have killed someone already and know what that feels like, you will never know how you will react until that final moment of truth.
my advice to anyone as an experienced street fighter and past owner of a martial arts school is simple. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE ANY WEAPON THAT YOU DO NOT WANT USED ON YOU.
my advice to women is simple. do nothing. meeting agression, with agression will seal your fate. just scream. do not be in the wrong place at the wrong time. you cannot avoid a couple facts of life:
1) the laws of physics. your attacker is stronger, he is bigger. he is more powerful. there is a reason why almost any fighting or contact sport in the world is divided into weight classes.
2)kicking him in the balls is going to piss him off. you cannot meet agression with agression without expecting to be overpowered. it is a mistake.
leave the weapons at home. dont be a hero. dont be brave. do not think you are tougher, faster or better prepared than your attacker. chances are, you are not.
ignoring that simple advice, kills more people than anything.
i hate "self defense" classes. especially for woman. it is a scam. there are no short cuts... no secret holds, throws or strikes or kicks. fighting is a skill. like any skill it takes years to master. some may never master it, some may never even be able to get over the feeling of actually hitting a person.
having a false sense of security by going to Thai Bo twice a week will get you hurt or killed just as fast as pulling out a weapon you are not ready, or not trained to use.

Do not get me wrong, I do not carry any 22s. I prefer my .40s, 9mm, or .45s but I have read many reports how deadly .22s are. ( especially for killing people effectively and quietly)
If I have to shoot, I want something that is going to ROAR and if it does not hit the bad guy, it will scare the shit out of them. I also like the idea of 15+ rounds...
I always said first 5 shots are to get them to run, if they are still around after that - I am going for the kill. hahaha

Colin and SP, good points on the 15 hits...I believe that's where speed could come in 15 hits that were infield hits and hits where normally the runner would be out.

I remember my dad saying "don't aim at anything you don't intend to shoot" and "don't shoot it unless you're going to eat it or it's going to eat you" To this day, I get the giggles when shooting paper targets, wondering how they'll taste with a bit of salt ;)

Oh yes, I'll shoot! I took a defense class once where they said if you were being raped, try to get access to their eyeballs, press them into their sockets and it would send them into shock. The instructor said "Now, if you're squeamish, you might not be able to do this." LIKE HELL! Someone's raping me and squeamishness gets thrown out the window!
We grew up with guns. My grandfather bought a 2500+ cattle ranch when he "retired" and always had one in his nightstand. No innocent cows were killed ;) I never had one when then kid was young just because he managed to disobey EVERY rule I ever set, and I didn't want him to have access to a loaded gun (IMHO, an unloaded gun is a paperweight). We took gun safety and shooting classes so I'm not afraid of them. I just don't want to be in a position where I say to myself "You know, if I had bought the freaking gun, I wouldn't be being attacked right now!" ;))

Yes, I'm getting a handgun. I thought about getting a shotgun, but Shok and my brother were laughing a bit too much after envisioning me shooting one and then landing on my ass 4 feet behind where I was previously standing. Then I considered a rifle and someone reminded me that the only school shooting where no one was killed was done with a rifle.....I've shot a 357 before and landed on my ass *10 feet* behind where I was standing so that nixes that. I'm more interested in getting something I can handle than sheer power :)

Some thoughts on why noone has been able to bat .400.
The talent of the teams defense is much better than it was in those days. You now have outiflders who run 4.5 40's, and infielders who can snag anything they can reach, and some things they cant.
The difference between .370 and .400 over 500 at bats is only 15 hits over the course of an entire season. Not much.

I'm personally partial to the Glock 17 when it comes to personal protection - I keep one on me at all times... Or the HK USP (40 cal or 9mm). Both can be put to extremes environmentally and still perform well. But if your looking for something that will scare bears in the great outdoors, I'd highly suggest the Mossberg 870 Shotgun (pistol grip, 12 gauge). Easy to operate and makes a great noise!

On the earlier post about the .400 hitter, my explanation wasn't nearly complete.
The .400 hitter disappears because of the skrinking of the variation of BOTH pitchers and batters. Their stats are always relative to each other. There were some REALLY BAD pitchers in those days and Cobb got lots of at-bats against them.
And let's remember that Cobb had PLENTY of at bats in those seasons.
He was at .420 after 146 games. He would have still been at .400 after 16 more!
No word yet if it's linked to terrorism but it sure seems weird. How often do you hear about Greyhound buses being hijacked?

Greyhound Halts Service Nationwide
**********************************
MANCHESTER, Tennessee (CNN) -- Greyhound halted nationwide bus service Wednesday morning after a bus crash in Manchester, Tennessee, that killed four people, a company spokeswoman said.
A passenger told CNN affiliate WTVF that a rider had slit the throat of the driver.
Victims were being airlifted to hospitals in Nashville to the north and Chattanooga to the south. Although Greyhound reported four dead, Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville said 10 people had died.
Spokeswoman Kristen Parsley said the company is capable of contacting
drivers on the road to tell them to halt service.
"Greyhound officials felt we need to do that as a precaution," Parsley said. She said anyone who feared loved ones may have been on the bus, which was traveling from Nashville to Atlanta, Georgia, could call 1-800-884-2744 for information. Carly Rinearson, a passenger on the bus, said in a phone call to WTVF that a man kept asking if he could have her seat near the front of the bus.
Rinearson said when she refused to give up her seat, "He just went up to the bus driver and like slit his throat. And the bus driver turned the wheel and the bus tipped over."
The bus, thought to have been carrying around 35 passengers, was on its side in the median of Interstate 24, according to Parsley. The accident occurred near the intersection of I-14 and state Highway 41 near mile marker 105, police said.

Darn, I hate "legalese"!
Due to Exodus' shaky situation and the fact that I still have two servers with Exodus, I am looking for alternatives. Of course that would also mean cancelling my Exodus contract. Usually there is a 90 day notice, but the contract also says:
==
Term and Termination
8.2 Termination
(b) For cause. Either party will have the right to terminate this agreement if:
[...]
(ii) the other party becomes voluntary petition in bankruptcy or any voluntary proceeding relating to insolvency, receivership, liquidation, or composition for the benefit of creditors;
==
Does anyone know if this applies to Exodus' current situation? Because that would mean I could cancel at any time without notice..
