another point to consider, with scientists (einstein), baseballers (babe ruth) , activists (martin leuther king - i have a dream!!), nuns (mother theresa) - anyone who has a place in history as a 'brilliant' achiever - they have all passed on - and several hundred years have passed to allow us to ... not exagerate, but to perhaps magnifify their place in history.
I wonder, in 500 years, who will be the 'greats' of the world from this time ...

I think the 5 man pitching rotation is more responsible for the power surges...but for higher batting averages, it's a more grueling travel schedule now. There are baseball teams in all time zones and they constantly travel back and forth and I'm sure that has to take some toll...plus, before Ruth started making home runs fashionable, you had the deadball era where guys like Homerun Baker led the league with 13 homeruns. When Ruth started hitting homers, it brought in higher attendances, so they juiced the ball up a bit. So before then, hitters had to get by on hitting cleanly over hitting for power. Also, seeing the same pitcher a lot more times during a season may have helped better hitters hit .400+, now teams play shorter series against each other...
I'm sure there are other factors too...The reason Tony Gwynn often flirted with .400 but couldn't quite make it was his lack of speed...for someone to hit .400, they'd have to get some infield singles in there.
Is anyone else really loving the baseball season this year? Sure, the Braves aren't the team they were, but all the different records that are being broken/challenged..Sammy Sosa, only man to hit 60+ homers 4 times, Ricky Henderson 1 away from the all time runs scored record and 3 hits away from 3000...two legends that are pure class retiring: Cal Rikpen and Tony Gwynn, Ripken's all-star homer to win the game...McGwire hitting below .200 yet still on track for 30 homers...a team like the Mariners who everyone dimissed after A-Rod left with the best record in baseball thanks to two guys who speak almost no english, Bret Boone having a career year (where were those numbers when he was with the Braves? ;))...
Wed, 03 Oct - 03:04:56 216.67.211.69 Post #: 21866
mutt... do you think overall quality of pitching was better in 1894 than it is now?
not true. you could look at the cumulative effects of a 5 man rotation, the number of pitchers who got a shot do to an expanded rotation, and therefore the overal quality of the pitchingg seen by todays batters..yadda yadda but that is not quantifiable.
what is quantifiable is the nature of the game. Faster pitches with more action on them, pitchers not pulling nearly as many complete games, meaning frehs arms from inning 7 up on average, maybe?
as for a 4 man rotation, isnt there some kind of rule prohibiting that? but that is only during the regular season...
longer season i can understand hurting batting averages......tho we don't see guys hitting .400 in August very often......one year I remember John Olerud hitting over.400 late in August, George Brett in September, Rod Carew maybe and some others.
But the 5 man pitching rotation I don't buy. Pitching is so bad now that most teams are lucky to have TWO quality pitchers. Rested or not they still suck! I am old enough to remember some amazing 4 man pitching rotations, Baltimore always seemed to have 4 No.1 starter guys at one time.
They should be able to pitch on 4 days rest. I don't know why some team doesn't try it.
mutt
mutt..that is interesting, but you can attribute lack of .400 hitters primarily to expanded seasons.. adding 20 or thirty games to a season can kill a hitters average, as well as push a 5 man rotation, meaning better, more rested pitchers, and more variety of pitches seen.
Colin is right. I didn't realise there were that many .400 hitters in the early days of professional baseball. When Ted Williams hit .400, last guy to do it, in 1941, it hadn't been done in about 15 years. And now it's over 60 years.
And another thing is that these old timers made alot of contact but damn they were weak. When Babe Ruth came along he would hit more home runs than entire teams. They year he hit 60 the next closest guy had 17. The juiced up Bonds and McGwire's can hit 70,80,90 or 150 and they won't come close to Ruth's achievments.

I'm a Bad American-this pretty much sums it up for me. I like big
trucks,
big boats, big houses, and naturally, pretty women.
I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some
midlevel governmental functionary with a bad comb-over who wants to
give it away to crack addicts squirting out babies.
I don't care about appearing compassionate. I think playing with toy
guns doesn't make you a killer. I believe ignoring your kids and
giving them Prozac might.
I think I'm doing better than the homeless.
I don't think being a minority makes you noble or victimized. I have
the right not to be tolerant of others because they are different,
weird or make me mad. This is my life to live, and not necessarily up
to others expectations. I know what SEX is and there are not varying
degrees of it.
I don't celebrate Kwanzaa. But if you want to that's fine; I just
don't feel like everyone else should have to.
I believe that if you are selling me a Dairy Queen shake, a pack of
cigarettes, or hotel room you do it in English. As of matter of fact,
if you are an American citizen you should speak English. My uncles and
forefathers shouldn't have had to die in vain so you can leave the
countries you were born in to come disrespect ours, and make us bend
to your will. Get over it.
I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry butt if you're
running from them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand
the word 'freeze' or 'stop' in English, see the previous line. I don't
use the excuse "it's for the children" as a shield for unpopular
opinions or actions.
I know how to count votes and I feel much safer letting a machine with
no political affiliation do a recount when needed. I know what the
definition of lying is, and it isn't based on the word "is" - ever.
I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you
qualify for any special loan programs, gov't sponsored bank loans,
etc., so you can open a hotel, 7-Eleven, trinket shop, or any thing
else, while the indigenous peoples can't get past a high school
education because they can't afford it. I didn't take the initiative
in inventing the Internet. I thought the Taco Bell dog was funny. I
want them to bring back safe and sane fireworks. I believe no one ever
died because of something Ozzy Osbourne, Ice-T or Marilyn Manson sang,
but that doesn't mean I want to listen to that crap from someone
else's car when I'm stopped at a red light. But I respect your right
to.
I think that being a student doesn't give you any more enlightenment
than working at Blockbuster or Jack In The Box. I don't want to eat or
drink anything with the words light, lite or fat-free on the package.
Our soldiers did not go to some foreign country and risk their lives
in vain and defend our Constitution so that decades later you can tell
me it's a living document ever changing and is open to interpretation.
The guys who wrote it were light years ahead of anyone today, and they
meant what they said - now leave the document alone, or there's going
to be trouble.
I don't hate the rich. I help the poor. I know wrestling is fake. I've
never owned, or was a slave, and a large percentage of our forefathers
weren't wealthy enough to own one either. Please stop blaming me
because some prior white people were idiots - and remember, tons of
white, Indian, Chinese, and other races have been enslaved too - it
was wrong for every one of them.
I believe a self-righteous liberal Democrat with a cause is more
dangerous than a Hell's Angel with an attitude. I want to know exactly
which church is it where the "Reverend" Jessie Jackson preaches; and,
what exactly is his job function.
I own a gun, you can own a gun, and any red blooded American should be
allowed to own a gun, but if you use it in a crime, then you will
serve the time.
I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and
continue to make more. If it makes you mad, then invent the next
operating system that's better and put your name on the building. Ask
your buddy that invented the Internet to help you.
I don't believe in hate crime legislation. Even suggesting it makes me
mad. You're telling me that someone who is a minority, gay, disabled,
another nationality, or otherwise different from the mainstream of
this country has more value as a human being that I do as a white
male. If someone kills anyone, I'd say that it's a hate crime. We
don't need more laws! Let's enforce the ones we already have.
I think turkey bacon, turkey beef, turkey fake anything sucks.
I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child- it takes a
parent with the guts to stand up to the kid and spank his butt and say
"NO!" when it's necessary to do so.
I'll admit that the only movie that ever made me cry was Ole Yeller.
I didn't realize Dr. Seuss was a genius until I had a kid. I will not
be frowned upon or be looked down upon or be made to keep silent
because I have these beliefs and opinions. I thought this country
allowed me that right. I will not conform or compromise just to keep
from hurting somebody's feelings. I'm neither angry nor
disenfranchised, no matter how desperately the mainstream media would
like the world to believe otherwise.
Yes, I guess by some people's definition, I may be a bad American. But
that's tough.

Just a little comment. I think that the same level of genius and skill in science is around. Maybe more so with the better education available now. But I think what is happening now is that the true genius scientists are now "invisible" as they are working on secured projects, either for government or for corporations.
That being said, there's probably also a lot of amazing research being done that's so far above our knowledge that it kind of doesn't get mentioned on cNet... Colin,
that is a good point. The average webmaster these days may not be the most technologically savvy, or most technologically "interested". The Internet has evolved into a way of life for so much of society.
When a sport is in its infancy, then there will be some who are standouts just by skill and knowledge. Then when more people become knowledgeable, the difference becomes talent, or the cliche of "thinking outside the box".
I think that things like tgp2 are new ways of looking at old ideas.

Geeky,
I've been wondering where you've been!
The variation shrinks when there is a right wall (max ability) and the average gets better. This doesn't happen with any increasing population. It only happens when the average is better. I do NOT think today's webmaster is better on average than yesterdays. In fact, I think it's probably the opposite.
.. because the average moves closer to the peek.
Colin Do you TGP2?
Tue, 02 Oct - 19:35:02 24.164.51.72 Post #: 21807
There is also a feature that shows up in baseball too. You have to look at the full range of variation. There used to be a bunch of .400 hitters, now they have disappeared. They were just so much better than their peers. Over the years, as hitters got better on average, the variation shrinks.
Same thing with scientists. There are SO MANY good scientists that the variation has shrunk and individuals don't stand out as well.
Colin Do you TGP2?
Tue, 02 Oct - 19:32:12 24.164.51.72 Post #: 21806
Enforcer, I think there are many reasons for what you mention. Work at the frontiers of science today requires extreme levels of funding and collaboration. I've seen a paper on particle physics with more than 50 names on it! People working alone usually tackle small problems.
Also .. a lot of fundamental things, beautiful theories that describe much of nature can only be desribed once.
Then you have the fact that you have to study for 8-10 years just to get the basics of your field down. 400 years ago you could get all the basics down in a few years.
Universities place so much emphasis on publishing that many scientists choose more tractable problems just to make sure they get more funding.
I think there are scientists that are just as smart today as those in days of old, but with these factors it really dampens the REALLY BIG results.
