It used to be considered somewhat shameful if you discovered a convict in your family's genealogy, but even that has taken a major reversal in the last 20 years or so. Now it's almost a matter of pride if your family tree contains a convict ancestor. :)

Fortunately, having pride in having a convict ancestor doesn't spill over into any desire to replicate said ancestor's behaviour...not for most of us anyway. :)
