Heya Damnman,
Had a nice phone conversation with Shannon today. Sounds like you guys have some exciting stuff coming out. Good luck with it.
That letter for some reason touches me more than the others I've received today as it was very heartfelt (not that the others weren't so I'm not dimishing the impact of them) but here's someone in Germany showing an appreciate and expression of condolence...
I must also say, it's amazing the number of emails today from companies expressing condolences is touching and shows that behind these corporations are actual people who feel just as the rest of us do...

Webfather, my opinion is that america needs to get back to work and get back to doing what america does best: Being free and maintaining a solidarity not found anywhere else.
Getting the airports open - getting SOME flights to go from point to point will reclaim the skies. They need to be secure - and they need to be opened.
I think Fay has the right idea - stick out your chin and get back to it.

I got this email from unknown persons from Germany.
It describes the feelings of at least a few of the German people.
It was in German and English, I post only the English.
Ladies and gentlemen,
after a time of the silence, after the inconceivable has
entered, we look for a way, a reaction; and find no
possibility, which is actually appropriate.
Please excuse our bad English.
We do not speak your language unfortunately very well, however
we feel and suffer with your nation, with the sacrifices and
the relative of this inconceivable crime.
We are simple persons, who live in Germany, however is it us a
need, you, the United States of America, your citizens, the
person affected and relative, your people, to express our
sympathy.
His ugly grimace and it showed the blast dared, to explain
freedom, right and order the war.
Now it is time for answers.
Our answers are the prayers for your nation, your citizens and
the free world.
More is not in our force.
But we would like to strengthen and encourage you and your
large nation therein, which to hunt blasts and to cancel by
the countenance of this earth.
We pray for you, that you find the power, to find with all
decisiveness the blast and to punish mercilessly.
This war was explained not only your nation, but each
individual person, in freedom, right, order and civilization.
So we find also ourselves in the state of war. On your side.
Our prayers accompany you and your nation.

Koko, not so much Vegas itself as the Hoover Dam....a plane crashing into the dam puts Vegas under water...
Toolz, also remember though that Las Vegas has a large Air Force base there too as well as the Nevada Testing Site (even though it's now shut down)...so it is a highly thought about target I'm sure...
but I'm sure the international aspect carries weight as a reason not to attack...

This is one of the few times I have to respectfully disagree with you
I think Fay has to go tomorrow (Sharpie, please understand I am in no way trying to speak for you)
To show no matter what, our way of life will not be changed
WF, you're most likely correct (and trying to save Fay a headache) and the flight will be problematic if at all
But we have to hold our heads up and go on
My family has a Disney trip planned for 10 days from now
Don't know how we will go and have the "Disney" experience
But we have to
Even my 2 month old son has a job right now
That's to bring smiles to everyone through these trying and troublesome times

Webfather, I will certainly be calling before I leave home. I really don't have a week to lose. (This is not a pleasure trip) I would not even consider it, if there were a lot of complications to the flight.
Indy has passed the new standards & is open, waiting for other airports to open so they can start moving. (possibly around midnight?) The flight is nonstop & does originate in Indy. (The plane is there.) If Vegas opens - it will probably go...sometime. I hope you are not clairvoint :-)

Wow, just drove ovr to Bullhead City (a smallish redneck type town) and flags flying everywhere, fast food resteraunts, stores, and even alongside the road at every lightpole...a flag everywhere...you can't buy flags in the stores as they are running out...amazing...I just wish we held this kind of patriotism every day rather than just after a tragedy such as yesertdays...maybe not a flag every 10 feet, but this sense of country pride...if only it could be everyday...maybe this will actually start that trend...
Also, the bloodbanks here are booked until at least September 17th, but since I'm a rare bloodtype, they may be able to get me in sooner, but even then, I'm looking at another 2-3 days....folks, remember, these blood banks need your donations ALL THE TIME, not just in moments of tragedy such as these...if anything good comes from this tragedy it'll be an awareness of the how much freedom we actually do have and the need for donation of not only blood, but clothing, blankets and food.

I agree. Before this the rule was, give in to the hijacker, they just want to take the plane somewhere and land. It was the safest thing for the crew and passengers.
Obviously, after this, that rule is going to HAVE to change to pilots open leave the door sealed no matter what.
Also like the idea of tranquilizer guns and tasers (in lieu of phasers) for Sky Rangers.
As for passenger delays, on the McNeil-minus-Lair Hour tonight some idiot said it could take five hours, and everyone agreed passengers would not fly if that was the case. They also had on the former head of Al El security who said passengers arriving to an airport two hours before a plane is to leave is more than enough time to adequately do checks.

The problem, IMHO, of the new guidelines is that some are too strict to keep in effect for long. They'll start easing up on them due to consumer complaints and when we have our guard down again is when we're the most vulnerable. I personally don't think there's going to be another strike anytime soon with all the increased security across the US. I think that's why they did so many hits all at once - had they spaced them, we (America) would have had time to prepare. Now they're sitting back enjoying the chaos. I would rather see a long term solution such as training the freaking security people. That's by far one of the MAIN leaks we have, at least in Atlanta. For years there have been pathetic horror stories.

Here are the new guidelines for air travel (note the last one):
.
The reopened airports will have several new security procedures in place. According to transportation, airport and airline officials, they include:
Thorough searches of all planes and airports
No curbside check-ins, nor check-ins at hotels and other off-airport sites.
Allowing only passengers to pass through security checkpoints to gates.
A ban on all knives and other cutting instruments, including plastic.
Uniformed police patrolling airports.
Searches of flight crews, service personnel and vendors.
Checks of passengers, using hand-held metal detectors.
Armed sky marshals aboard airplanes.

I like the darts idea...altho phasers would be cool, too. Set to stun, of course.
My hub's Muslim Iranian-American buddy Haile suggests that we tape the voice of a Persian/Arabic mother-in-law and thereby render them paralyzed with terror.
Seriously, Mike's comment about El Al has a lot of merit, although there would need to be a guard presence to protect the passengers, too.
Still, remember, there have been 12 major attempts at terrorists acts against the US...this one succeeded, but the others didn't. Maybe a few extra precautions is all that is needed, though that would be small comfort to those poor souls in the buildings and planes.

They had armed security on planes a long time ago....they were called Sky Marshals. I don't remember when or why they got rid of them. Probably cost too much and we got cocky and lax. Seems like this is the message being sent loud and clear by this tragedy.
You get the security you pay for.

It's clear that we are all going through a wide range of emotions regarding the events that took place yesterday - Anger, Fear, Shock, Grief, etc.
Many of you have expressed a desire to help and we think this is the best way for us to deal with what has taken place.
Therefore, WEGCASH and WebQuest have joined forces and are in the process of putting together a charity auction to support this cause.
The charity auction will take place next week and more details will be released tomorrow regarding time, place, how to donate, etc.
The last time we held a charity auction, the webmaster community stepped up to the plate and we were able to give over $250,000 to childrens charities. We're hoping that once again, the industry will pull together and show strong support for this worthy cause.
Our best wishes and prayers go out to everyone who has been touched by this tragedy.

In order to help the flooded Red Cross website, Amazon.com has set
up a way to make donations through their website. It's secure
payment and they've waived their usual fees.
I was there a few moments ago. The amount donated is over 600,000

currently to only take $1 but every little bit helps, I guess.
Peaches, I don't know how that works, but I distinctly remember one time that I had forgotten to turn my cell off during flight, just a couple months ago...we were 37,000 ft in the air, and I pulled it out to turn it off, and I remember it had a full signal...

Dumb questions (or "musings from the mountain"):
1) Were these planes relatively empty? 266 people on 4 large jets seems like a small number. It makes one wonder if they had access to the manifest and looked for flights that would offer the least amount of resistance.
2) In this age of "identy theft", is there truly any way to track down a passenger on a flight? I know people that have had their names used on driver's licenses and credit cards - seems to me that's all you'd need in order to obtain a plane ticket.
And, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to best looking "senior" I know, JohnIP :)))
