BTW - Hope you had a full tank of gas this morning. Was out a little bit ago and passed several gas stations with looong lines. The gas station employees were raising the prices as I drove by. Filled up not long after it all started and it was $1.40 a gallon, drove by later and it was $1.99. Heard gas was up to $5 a gallon in Tulsa. Wal-mart was packed too..
Listening on the scanner and they are "appropriating" any empty vehicle they find to transport cops and rescure personnel. They just ordered 5 Coca-cola trucks to a relief area. They are sending out search parties to try to find medical personnel that are trying to get into the city. Sounds like things are pretty crazy there. Our bombing here in OKC was bad and relief efforts went on for over 48 hours. Can hardly imagine how long they will go on in NYC.

Wow.. they just reported seeing some "middle-eastern" people jump out of a van in the middle of the street..the cops aren't going near the van. Amazing to listen to..

Some pretty interesting stuff. One cop was telling some other cops to visit all area supermarkets and take whatever first aid supplies and food could be found to give to the injured.
They were just now trying to get to a white van that was floating and on fire near some docks. They were kind of worried..some were saying it was very suspicious. News reports are saying it is calm and orderly there but the cops on the scanner were calling their station saying that whole blocks were in panic.

I have friends & partners living and working in Manhattan and have not been able to reach them.

What is truly disturbing is the flights that were chosen, all bound for California, were FULLY-fueled... very organized, precise and certainly not over yet.

AllFirst Bank had already closed all branches before noon today and may be closed tomorrow. Bank of America is not allowing more than $500 withdrawals at certain locations.

I agree, Peaches. Anyone who's surprised that something like this has happened is just fooling themselves. It was only a matter of time. I'm shocked at the magnitude and organization of it, but not terribly shocked that it happened. It was only a matter of what where & when. My condolences and thoughts go out to the thousands of families that will be hurt by what's happened today.

That said, I'm seriously hoping that we won't see a reduction in our freedoms here. Terrorism isn't about dead bodies, it's about instilling fear. If we see any reduction in our freedom, then they've won. Of course, there are things we could handle more intelligently, such as airport security, but you'll never have perfect security unless you're totally locked down. With freedom comes risk, and I'm willing to take that risk to have the freedom I've always had. I'll have no qualms about stepping onto an airplane whenever I want, or going into tall office buildings, etc. Fuck 'em, they aren't going to intimidate me.

And as for the people responsible, well, I know it's not realistic, just a gut reaction, but I could see making a list of every terrorist organization or individual that's threatened the US in any way in the past, and just start working our way down the list with "the big eraser." Then see how many times something like this happens in the future. But I know that's not going to happen, and may not be the most sensible solution to this problem.

I'm done on the subject, I have work to attend to.

This is ALL surreal. I didn't even know anything until my son called me. I was just blissfully going about my day eating breakfast and reading a magazine.

The US has been extremely slack for years. Jim's example of the airport is repeated 100's, maybe even 1000's of times day. When I worked at the Atlanta Airport I had access to everything - the tarmac, the planes, the international terminal, etc. and there were NEVER any checks run on me. I was a subcontractor for a company that didn't even know my home address or phone number, let alone any way to investigate me.

We allow anyone and everyone access to our country. I find it ironic that they're "Closing the Mexican/US border" ??!! Uh, WHAT border? All of a sudden we're going to stop people from coming into the country? I'll take $1 for every Mexican that gets through "the border" today and then I'll retire..... There are MANY known terrorist members that are living in the US LEGALLY. Our "It can't happen here" mentality has to stop. How many times have there been "crackdowns" at the airports, merely to be quietly lifted in a few weeks or months? Security is a hassle - it takes longer to get into Government buildings and to travel. HOPEFULLY we realize that we have to be aware that there are countries that want us zapped off the map.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone that has friends and family affected by this tragedy. A friend has a son that works in the WTC that she hasn't heard from.

Finding WHO to obliterate will the hard part, but let's pray the US does it before we get hit again :(

I am relieved to hear that one of my best friends who lives in New York is fine. He works in the World Financial Center across the street from the Trade Center, and was actually walking to the office and watched from the ground as the second plane hit the Towers. Amazingly enough he bumped into his brother in law during the mayhem(another good friend of mine) and they are trying to get out of Manhattan and back home....

Please say a prayer for my friend Pete whom I have not been able to contact yet. He is a conductor for the PATH train and works the Hoboken to World Trade Center run. He was pulling into the World Trade Center during the bombing a few years back and managed to escape uninjured. I hope he was that lucky again.
