On the subject of Spywares, Sykkboy I have a cable modem and use Zone Alarm Pro as well, and it's been great. ANY program that tries to access the internet, either incoming or outgoing, it asks my permission first. Excellent product in my opinion, and I highly recommend it to anyone with a dedicated connection like cable or DSL. Once you set it up properly, it will never bother you unless something new tries to access the net (like spyware). It has also caught several scripts that have tried to run automatically on my PC when I visit certain web sites, and prevents it from running / installing on my system. Does a great job at catching hacker attacks as well. No, I'm not a ZA salesman LOL!! Just really happen to have found something to make the net safer for me :-)

we've been best friends since high school, but that's as far as it goes....read some of my back articles in the Chronicles for more info about FuckBucket ;) I converted him into a wrestling fan by forcing him to watch japanese hardcore wrestling tapes with the likes of Huyabusa, Tajiri, Sabu, Kendo Nakita and the Rotten Brother...heheheeh

Yup Ulfie, I use ZoneAlarm as well, blocks most of the spyware programs...

it's also important to note which programs are installed when you download freeware or shareware programs...Kazaa, BearShare and a lot of the P2P software show you what programs are being installed, be sure to uncheck the other boxes and only install the main software...because if/when you uninstall the software, you probably aren't uninstalling all the little programs that came with it...

Spyware is usually installed when you download some sort of free software from the internet. Say you grab some free html editor and install it. It may also install a seperate program that runs in the background without your knowledge and does nothing but track what you are doing on the net. Periodically, the program reports back to a server somewhere and let's it know all about what you have been doing. It basically uploads personal information about you without your consent.

Cookies on the other hand are fairly harmless. You can delete all your cookies and it won't cause you any problems or you surf with cookies turned off.

Frankly, I now run zonealarm as a firewall and anytime something tries to connect to net from my PC without my permission I get an alert and can stop it, figure out what it is and get rid of it. Everyone should be running a firewall ESPECIALLY if you are on a cable modem. You are wide open for all kind of attacks being launched from your machine without you even knowing about it.

BTW download MSIE 6.0 and at this moment 99.9% of all sites placing cookies on your computer won't be able to do that... the cookies will be blocked... (even from Doubleclick, Engage, Burstmedia, Sextracker, Hitbox, almost every affiliate program, etc.) that's until the sites have appropriate private policy (p3p) files published on their servers...

so if you run some kind of software using cookies for tracking uniques or sales or anything, you may want to check http://www.w3.org/P3P/ to make sure your program is working in msie 6.0 which comes with the new version of windows...

Here's my 2 cents on Cookies...

Cookies are extremely useful on the web. They allow for "state based" programming in an otherwise "stateless" environment.

At worst cookies CAN track SOME of your surfing habits, obviously only sites that use a comon service.

Here are some other cookies...

Grocery stores using "Club Cards" to offer discounts. What's the harm in safeway knowing that my toilet paper of choice is Kleenex Cotonelle? Or that I prefer to use right gaurd deodorant? They are tracking my buying habits. Of course I could just not give them my club card, much like I can turn off cookies in any browser.

Is anyone concerned about FedEx tracking your shipping habits? They know to who and from where you get packages.

How about Credit card companies tracking your spending habits then offering you discounts and/or coupons for services they know you use?

What about Caller ID? And the computers on the other end that are able to pull up your account records without taking down all your information?

Anyone ever leave those stickers from Jiffy Lube on their window that tells you when you're supposed to bring back your car for another oil change?

How many people use frequent flyer programs? The airlines are using those to track your flying habits. They know where and when you go and where you've been.

All you gamblers out there that have casino hosts and "players cards" are also using cookies. They track your play, wins, losses, games, times, days, etc... Then they spam your home mailbox with offers and "tournaments" that you might be interested in.

How are any of these any different than cookies on the web? These are all forms of cookies. With almost all of these cookies there are some sort of benefits given to the "cookie holder" on the web, the value is adding "state" to the internet (ie: web). I came up with 7 examples of cookies in our everyday world, I know there are tons of more examples out there..

When people are talking about adware and spyware, I believe they are talking about applications (installed on your computer) that are doing things like globally tracking your habits without your permission, switching out ads and doing other stuff...

I actually ran the spyware software a couple of weeks ago and ending up removing 240 diffrent files from about 30 different sites..doubleclick, gator, and a host of others...it did, by the way, increase the speed of my computer noticably, as software promised.

Serge I ran that ad software as well - I am not sure what those files from sextracker are. I know there were TONS of them on my machine though.

I assumed they were Cookies - however I know that many sites use cookies including Oprano and I did not see them being cleaned up.

So I would say the sextracker is doing something more then normal cookies...

Maybe we can find out.

I couldn't help but notice a post earlier in the day regarding sites places cookies on your site when you visit, as I am sure you are aware, cookies are NOT the files that cause the problems, spy files are actual small applications that transmit info about you and your websurfing activites and corelate the data gleaned to pop ads at you that relate to the information obtained.
