From what I understood, the problem with dialers was because it downloaded in the background and disconnected the surfer from his dial up, only to dial a foreign country who billed at exhorbitant rates. When we got our son's phone bill for over $400., we found the source was Madagascar. We tore his computer apart looking for anything that told him he was being re routed.

The FTC received alot of complaints about folks not being warned or given an option, which, in their minds, was fraudulent behaviour.

Sure!
Not knocking 3rd pp's (I use several of them myself).
But in recent years the majority of paysites/proggy's have moved to just a few 3rd pp's... negative databases have grown tenfold.... refunds/credits have increased drastically (in the processors efforts to maintain their accts).... fraud filters have tightened...throughput has dropped, etc. I would question anybody's motive for launching a new proggy under these conditions. BUT, if one were willing to take a chance at captilizing on these market conditions... maintaining your own merchant account, handling your own customer service and using fraud controls to fit YOUR needs, is the only way to seperate from the crowd! :)

If you had bothered to read the whole thread on the issue you would see where I said "CHECKS,ACH, 900, AND DIALERS DO NOT TAKE AWAY FROM CREDIT CARD SALES"

I do need to worry about fraud on my system, bandwidth, content cost of users that get to use my stuff for free for 7-10 days. Paying the webmasters on a per sign up basis, doesn't always include refunds and revokes, just the sign ups... THAT COSTS A PROGRAM MONEY!

Worrying is what I get paid for, looking at all the angles is what I get paid for.

I'm unclear as to what the answer was to my question:

How many of the revokes are NSF?
How many are incorrect routing/account #?
How many are returned ie chargedback?

Any insight on the the states is just best not to do adult online checks in? Or the best ones to do business in?

Trust in the fact that one of our main concerns was the amount of traffic that we could generate. We may not be able to send webmasters 20,000 hits a day but I can Gaurantee you that the traffic will convert better than 1: 5000
the ratio you can from some TGP's out there now.

C'mon MissD, being the billing guru that you are.... you know that CC's will always be the #1 payment option for SURFERS! And you should also know that paysites need to offer as many different pay options as they can to sift every last penny out of their traffic.... Checks just happen to provide the MOST $$$'s for the LEAST risk! ;-)))

1. Not everybody is comfortable putting in their checking account information, see the part above where I said checks, 900, and dialers don�t take away from credit cards. I don't see this as an issue that affects the method.
2. Its still 7 to 10 days for a check to clear, all that time the surfer has access, leaves the same taste in my mouth as free trails.

Settlements occur every 8th day from pre-auth in our WTS system. Returned items on these auths are returned in as fast as 2 days and as late as 7 days. WTS reports & accounts for returns when they come in, which is generally much faster than our competitors. There are rules for how long it can take a receiving bank to report a return, but they are guidelines of NACHA who is just now trying to tackle the implications of Internet initiated transactions. The important point is that we DO NOT charge or asses fees on money that is not collected! And we DO collect mo money.... ;-)

3. Currently there is no federal statue in the US that says anyone who has a checking account is considered a legal adult (there is for credit cards), I�m sure there are local laws BUT�

Also its still really easy to fraud out a online check - what % are no money in the account and % are frauds in revokes?

Again you needn't be so concerned about fraud on checks! Our merchants DO NOT pay cb fees, return fees, or refund fees whatsoever! And if you run a webmaster proggy, we can show you how to pay out on COLLECTED signups, so where's YOUR risk with fraud??? Let us worry about that... ;-)))
NSF's represent approximately 15-20% of all returned items. Revocations are 1-2%.

When i say IT won't work... I mean the conept of trying to create your own domain extension... Heck... i could create a dns server that would respond to www.sex.fuckhooper but unless icann approves the .fuckhooper domain and the MAJOR registrars and the entire shared registry adopt that same standard you are stuck with a domain that about 3 people can see. The REASON that gord makes people download the software to view .xxx domains is because NOBODY is willing to acknowledge the domain extension... My hats off to him if he can manage to get 75% of the internet to download his software... but til then you have more chance of a return by stuffing money up your ass than buying a .xxx or .sex domain.
That's just the business standpoint.

From a philosophical standpoint, .xxx and .sex are ideas that the industry as a whole should be against. It gives the ability for the government to force usa porn webmasters into a nice little box... and once we're in a box it's much easier to shut us up! Think of it as a concentration camp for web sites!

Actually that was a pretty wierd day. I had a plan of a new type of TGP and worked it out then announced it on the boards. Funny thing is, DK had a similiar idea and actually posted about it just maybe 2 minutes before I did. We put our heads together and came up with some terms to go by. Back then we called it the NATGP and we had alot of folks involved, I remember Sykkboy and a bunch of others had sites involved. It had a good run for about 6 months, then it seems submissions just slowly died off.
I hope it all works out better this time.

Currently on-line checks are the smallest portion of my total billing, what does WTS do to increase sales via on line checks (ACH)? (I admit that
due to the % of refunds they are the least promoted)

WTS does not charge any processing fees unless funds are collected. Thus, the return %'s become a mute point. Because we've been at it for so long, we've been able to dial in the right combination of fraud filters, without losing through-put... resulting in significantly better COLLECTION ratios! ;-) For years we've encourage merchants to place the check option in a prominent place and ahead of credit cards, even discounting checks to credit cards, resulting in a DRASTIC tip in signup percentages (cc vs ach)! Once you've done the math for yourself on your OWN sites, you will see why many are still doing this!

I think some of it is the "pay attention" scenario... I think most people pay closer attention to their CC statements than to their bank statements (17%+ interest rates hurt!). Also, unless consumers have online banking, they don't see the debit's until your statements show up each month in the mail. ;-) Some of it is the expiration date on CC's and many other reasons that have been mentioned. On average, checks simply recur LONGER! On average, I would "guesstimate" that 65% of settled trials convert to recurring and even a higher % converts monthly thereafter. Retention fluctuates wildly from site to site (due to content, members area, etc), but I'll give you the low-end.....4+ months per.

Can you give a rough estimation of the % of returned checks using WTS?

It varies depending on each merchant, but adult is usually around 20-30% of Initial Pre-Auth's. The largest contributors are NSF's, invalid accounts and closed accounts. If we get the return back on business day 2, we immediately cancel/scrub the account and delete passwords. If after 8 days there is no return, we settle the transaction. Consumers also have 60 days to revoke the authorization (unlike CC's :), which we report as "late returns". These transactions are small percentage -- about 1-2%.

I see on your site WTS has an in-house collections department designed to specifically recover bad checks written by consumers, can you please let us know a little more about that?

Basically, if a consumer authorizes a transaction that is returned for NSF, we take collection actions similar to a local store merchant. Collections are made on behalf of our merchants, post in their settled accounts and paid out. ;-)))

I think it would be very profitable to bring out a program right now IF you already had a good webmaster base & some original ideas...but this would be the WORST time for anybody to come into this biz new....

really strange thing I parted ways with one of my best traffic suppliers early May and still maintained growth until mid-late June

Still hold reserved expectations for late Q3 to resume growth (but I wouldn't bet on it ;-) )

growth/action plan coming together implement then when adult market is a little stronger
