If you had no money...
or rather, just enough money to be classified as "lower middle class"...
Would you be happy? I can say with the utmost honesty that I would be very happy. Since I found this whole internet thing, I've learned that money brings some freedom for sure, and it also brings problems you never thought of before. But what really makes me happy are things like sunrises, morning dew, my son's smiling face, my wife's soft skin, my dog chasing a ball, the leaves changing colours, etc. etc.

Re: If you had no money...
I've been poor, really poor. Living out of my car with a drug problem.
I've been very well off. Moneywise, in the grand scheme of things, I am happy being well off, and being considered upper middle class. Material things aside, there is no price tag to falling asleep with my kids watching movies, seeing my fiancee after being apart for a time, or just the joy of hitting the ten ring after zeroing out my scope. (Edit - Upper Middle Class) |

Rich or poor I'm always a happy soul. But I like being Upper Middle Class. Dimmer switches ,My son's smiling face when he rides his custom bicycle , My wife's soft skin draped in Armani , my daughter wondering which shoes from her rack of LV and gucci to wear , the gardener mowing off the moorning dew , the housekeeper fetching the ball for the dog , the other gardener picking up those "Fucking cunting leaves" off my lawn before I kill him and two family members. ;-))) |

This thread is fine, it's just the way Chris formulated the question that's wrong...
Let's start over: How miserable would you be if you were broke again? |

Re: If you had no money...
I don't know why, but this thread remided me of something Fat Freddy once said:
Dope will get you through times with no money better than money will get you through times of no dope.

Re: If you had no money...
The other thing that I'm currently debating with a snide Frenchman privately...
I believe class is not just "money " related. I believe it is dependent on length of time you've had money, the level of your education ( formal and otherwise) and many other factors. |

Re: If you had no money...
I've never been anything but poor... Trying "rich" on for size for a few decades would be interesting.

Re: If you had no money...
I just want to be financially able to keep my ex-wives in a style comfortable enough so that they don't feel the temptation to move back in with me.
Or am I asking too much? |

Re: If you had no money...
Chris...I can answer your question with validation. We came to California, put nearly $500 of medication a month on my husband's thick collection of credit cards and went bankrupt. My husband has worked two full time minimum wage jobs and a time to keep us indoors. He once worked for a company the got arrested by the FCC, FBI and a whole lot of other letters. He had to sign documents to get his coffee mug back. (The company owner went to prison and to this day I have no idea what for.)
We've been scary poor. Our kids got their "new school clothes" from the thrift shop. The first time that happened, I cried through the entire thing. My husband gently pointed out what a great time the kids were having. There's a thousand stories. But...the question was: were we happy? Yes, we were. Other parents would complain about their kids, saying "oh, you know what it's like: they have to have the latest designer jeans..." I could - and did - say "no, I don't know what that's like." Being raised poor meant my kids weren't greedy for things. They got something much more important. They got *time.* I got a phone call once from one of my kids when she had long been out on her own. She'd just purchased "the absolute BEST pair of shoes I've ever owned in my LIFE!!!" She was so jazzed about these shoes. She'd purchased them from a neighbor's yard sale...for 25 cents. Does this mean I'd rather be poor than rich? No, of course not. I'd much rather be rich...and intend to be so some day. Money means security to me, not "things." I want the safe feeling money will bring. I want to own my own home to grow old in. I want my husband to have a big screen TV. I want to buy books when they first come out, rather than waiting for when they go to paperback. I am glad that the values were set during the "poverty years," though. It will prevent anything stupid from happening during the "not poor" years. |

Re: If you had no money...
Great post Morgan. In many ways I can relate as well.
I'm not sure how my original post was percieved. I guess I was just trying to say that I do appreciate the little things in life that most of us might take for granted.

Re: If you had no money...
I have no money now, compared to alot of people.
However, I don't live in fear of the utilities being turned off either. I've done that. I really think the only way having just a tad more money has changed me is that I now as less stressed so I can give attention to the smaller things. Perhaps a personal fault, but I was less likely to stop and admire the rays of a setting sun if I was freaked wondering if the car was getting re'pod that day.

I've had lots (and lots and lots) more money than I have today, and been far more miserable. I don't ever want to get back down as far as I was, say, twelve years ago. The odd thing is, I know more happy "lower middle income" people than I do "upper middle income" folks. The "class" of a person has absolutely fucking nothing to do with the amount of money they have, or how long they've had it.

I've heard two great definitions of class that I remember: "Class is grace under pressure." My mother said you could always tell whether or not a person had "class" by how they treated people in a service position. I worked exactly *one* night as a bartender then walked over and poured coffee in the coffee shop of the hotel I worked for. That one night gave me an education I've never forgotten. Hence, I'm the nicest, funniest, easiest person in the world to wait on and a big tipper. The waitress who got the biggest tip was the favorite at one of our locals who stalked up to my husband, looked him up and down and snarled "what the hell do you want NOW?" Loved it, loved it!!!!! |
