BAGHDAD, Iraq — President Bush (search) made a surprise Thanksgiving visit to American troops in Baghdad Thursday, flying secretly to violence-scarred Iraq to thank U.S. forces for serving there. It was the first trip ever by an American president to Iraq -- a mission tense with concern about his safety.
"You are defending the American people from danger and we are grateful," Bush told some 600 soldiers who were stunned and delighted by his appearance.
The president's plane -- its lights darkened and windows closed to minimize chances of making it a target -- landed under a crescent moon at Baghdad International Airport (search).
Bush flew in on the plane he most often uses, and White House officials went to extraordinary lengths to keep the trip a secret, fearing its disclosure would prompt terrorist attempts to kill him.
The news of Bush's trip was not released until he was in the air on the way back to the United States. "If this breaks while we're in the air we're turning around," White House communications director Dan Bartlett told reporters on the flight to Baghdad.
Security fears were heightened by an attack last Saturday in which a missile struck a DHL cargo plane, forcing it to make an emergency landing at the airport with its wing aflame.
Bush spent only about two hours on the ground, limiting his visit to the airport dinner with U.S. forces. The troops had been told that the VIP guests would be L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator in Iraq, and Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commander of coalition forces in Iraq.
In a ruse staged in the name of security, the White House had put out word that Bush would be spending Thanksgiving at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, with his wife, Laura, his parents and other family members. Even the dinner menu was announced.
Instead, Bush slipped away from his home without notice Wednesday evening and flew to Washington to pick up aides and a handful of reporters sworn to secrecy. Plans called for the trip to be abandoned if word had leaked out in advance.
Within the White House only a handful of senior aides knew about the trip, officials said.
Security fears were underscored by regular attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq. More than five dozen U.S. troops were killed by hostile fire in November, more than any other month since the end of major combat in Iraq on May 1. Early this week, a U.S. military official, Col. William Darley, said attacks peaked at more than 40 per day about two weeks ago and have since dropped to about 30 per day.
The violence persisted Thursday as the president was en route here.
Insurgents fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the Italian mission in Baghdad, damaging the building but causing no injuries, the U.S. military said. Also, a U.S. military convoy came under attack on the main highway west of Baghdad near the town of Abu Ghraib (search), witnesses said. And in the northern city of Mosul, unidentified gunmen shot dead an Iraqi police sergeant, said Brig. Gen. Muwaffaq Mohammed.
Since operations began, nearly 300 U.S. service members have died of hostile action, including 183 since May 1 when Bush declared an end to major fighting.
Bush's father visited U.S. troops at a desert outpost in Saudi Arabia on Thanksgiving Day 1990, in the runup to the Gulf War. "We won't pull punches. We are not here on some exercise. And we're not walking away until our mission is done, until the invader is out of Kuwait," he told the troops. At one p oint, he climbed into a bunker to chat with troops.
Bush's father shared lunch with U.S. troops 65 miles from Kuwait, occupied at the time by Saddam Hussein's forces. George H.W. Bush had been the first U.S. president to visit a front-line area since President Nixon went to Vietnam in 1969.

Ahhh and the true beauty of this is that he totally stole Hitlary's thunder...
She went all the way to Afghanistan for a photo op of having dinner with the troops on Thanksgiving and barely got mentioned if at all on most newscasts.
Serves her right, as she displayed utter disdain for the military while Bill was in office and is now trying to set herself up for a future run at the Presidency. The whole thing looked completely staged, you could see she was totally uncomfortable and out of place.
Meanwhile, Bush, if nothing else, certainly seems genuine when he's dealing with the troops and people in general. He jumps behind the serving line and starts serving up potatoes and corn to the grunts and seems quite at home. Hitlary looked like she would've liked to have been sitting on a towel so as not to get any of the dust off the bench she had her ass on onto her dress.

Cheney sent Shrub over there as bait, just hoping someone would kack him. He's all but unre-electable, kinda like the 2003 version of the open convertible, next to a grassy knoll.

Bush's visit to Iraq was a carefully coordinated and planned media event, and nothing more for God's sake.
If you have problems believing that, I'll be counting you one by one as I try to get some sleep tonight.
i dont get some of you people.
what did you think it was? a wrong turn by a drunken pilot? of course its politics.

No doubt that this was a photo op!
But it still took balls, it is still a combat zone. A DHL airplane was hit with a shoulder fired missle a few weeks ago.
First President to make it to Iraw ever. First President to visit a combat zone since Eisenhower!
It was carefully planned and managed, I saw the whole video - I was personally moved when the soldiers first saw the President!
I do not expect any else from you PD - you are blinded by your hatred for real leaders. And Evil Chris, you are Canadian, you come from a nation that has not fired a shot in anger in 50 years. ( Yeah I know you had a dozen troops fighting in Afganistan....) Did you prime minister go visit them?

It's fine Mike. You and I will forever be at odds where politics and the military are concerned. You have that superpower mentality that makes you believe that all other countries, especially the ones who don't support every single US policy, are inferior.
Canada is a fine country to live in, many times rated the best place in the world to live in by the United Nations Development Programme. But the truth is you do not know very much (at all) about your neighbour to the north. The rest of the world knows very much about you by contrast.

To me, this was either the stupidest thing Bush could ever have done, or its just a fine example of how well we can make a movie..
Bold and patriotic as it seems, i wonder....
First of all, for security and other reasons, the LEADER of a country never does anything as stupid as put themselves in harms way. the SS would never allow this.. it just doesnt make sense...
The only example of the big cheese going off to the front lines is Star Trek. The captain and the bridge crew beam down to planets, in harms way, etc, yada yada, yada.. That is called HOLLYWOOD. Its a movie, NOT reality. America is REALLY good at making movies, as we all know...
Now, i wonder... Was it staged as part of the Bush campaign to start getting his numbers up for the up coming election??
REMEMBER, the Bush camp has MILLIONS of dollars.. enough to do whatever is necessary to boost public opinion.. I think we did this back in the 60s as well.. (remember vietnam and all the disinformation that went on?)
Im not totally sure we really went to the moon either. We cant even keep the shuttle safely in orbit.. The moon is a heck of a lot further... and its alot more complicated to actually get there, as opposed to just floating around in earths orbit...
Anyway, my point is..
I put NOTHING past the abilities of this administration.. It only takes millions of dollars to produce a perfect disinformation campaign, and they have it.
For all i know, that visit by bush took place right here in the good ol USA.. It just makes more sense..
makes ya go hmmmmm?? even just a little bit??
Im not saying i beleive all this...... I just wonder...
Originally posted by Evil Chris@Nov 28 2003, 02:53 PM I said what PD said.... only different.
Have a nice cruise Mike.
I have no doubt Canada is a fine place to live. But you Canadians have been able to not have to worry about spending billions for Nationa Security, or other world affairs because your NEIGHBOR to the South takes care of it for you.
During the cold war, you guys loved being under the US nuclear umbrella.
The problem now is that many Canadiens, as well as their friends in Western Europe do not see the threat of islamic fundemantlism - they think the US is the "rough nation".
I could go on and on.... but we all know where we stand. Luckily the President is George Bush.
PD, you would be at home in Canada or France.... I will buy you a one way ticket!
Oh and as far as preaching to the choir - sometimes it is good to get the choir pumped!! Not everyone is Judas....

Did you have lunch with Bush go to over this?
The claim that Bush is more anti-porn then democrats is a joke. More prosecutions happen under Clinton.
The reality is NO POLITICIAN is a public fan of our industry. Wake up to reality. All politicians are scum who would sell out anyone to get votes and public support.
I am looking forward to a Bush re-election so we can finish the job we started in the middle east. If Bush wins, I would not want to be Assad in Syria....

What's funny is this is the reason for the surprise visit. Hillary is still a potential dark horse for the next election.
LBJ made at least one trip to Vietnam. Now, in your blind hatred of anything connected to the Democrats, I can understand why you'd miss it.
Yeah, LBJ made a visit to VietNam.
He did NOT, however, visit anything remotely resembling a war zone, certainly no area where hostile action had occured recently.
During Bush's visit to Iraq, reporters on the plane were cautioned to keep their window covers down, and the plane came in under cover of darkness, with no lights showing...because of RECENT attacks on aircraft with man-portable AA missiles in the immediate area.
So your point is what? Bush's shameless attempt to get some good press by posing with the troops was (a) more dangerous, or (B ) dumber) than Johnson's?

It's nice that the armchair warriors think this visit was "meaningless".
The real warriors however, did not seem to think so at all when they saw their Commander In Chief walk into the room to share a holiday dinner with them, spend time with them, and even serve them food with his own hands. They were screaming themselves hoarse and cheering so hard they were crying.
This visit wasn't for the benefit of the armchair warriors, it was for the benefit of the real warriors. So I think I'll trust their judgement on whether or not this was "meaningless", thank you very much.

Hell, they would have done the same for Hugh Hefner. Probably even more so. Hell, Mike Tyson would have gotten the same response if you wanna be honest.
I'm sure the GI's who were stuck on the tarmac for hours awaiting takeoff to get home to their families really appreciated Bush's last minute visit. I know I would love to be stuck inside an aircraft that could be shot at by a missle aiming raghead at any minute, instead of taking off immediately as needed to avoid being killed, for a symbolic visit from my leader.
I sure would have liked to see him in full desert combat gear this time. Then I could have 2 bush action figures to buy for my nephew this Christmas instead of one.
Carrie, you know this because of the carefully managed footage shown to you on television? Gimme a break. And as far as your armchair warrior remark goes - which branch of the service were you in? Did you serve with MikeAI?
Opinion among the troops on the ground about this boonedoggle will be split pretty much the way they are back here stateside - although there will be more of a tilt to the right, which is only natural in a military origanization. If six hundred got to eat turkey served by the hands of GW under the glare of the Fox television lights, thousands of others got an MRE or leftovers because they were out on heightened security patrols because the poohbah deemed it necessary to visit.
The choir is nodding approvingly.

PD, I am serving in the same branch of service that you're currently serving in - the armchair warriors of america. Hoo Rah.
Which is why I say I'll trust what the real warriors have to think about this - the ones putting their lives on the line over in Bagdhad every day who were actually there.
As for "Fox footage", let me introduce you to a concept called video pool rotation. I'm sure in your spare time between shaking your fist alternately at the television and the monitor, you can do some research on it.

Didja know that this was CNN's "turn", given to Fox? At least, that was the story according to a talking head on MS-NBC.
As far as the "boots on the ground", been doing a bunch of the whole "family and friends" routine since Wednesday night - including four people who have been there, two of whom get to do it again next spring. My unscientific survey shows them split dead even - although the Captain, diplomat that he is, asked me if I wanted his official opinion, or his personal one.
Unlike you, I have not always been an armchair warrior, nor is my knowledge of military life gleened from being around it a little. Want to know how I know that not everyone who is cheering GW in the mess hall was as pumped up as they are "playing on television"?
Somewhere off in the archives of some television station or another is me cheering the arrival of President Nixon.
Hey - a day off as an "extra" beat the holy shit out of spending the day picking up trash and making sure that any area of the base that AF-1 could have possibly flown over was spotless. Being a good little boy and keeping junior officers from losing Crypto gear earned me that.

You dumb fuck! You really want Cheney in? He would REALLY open up a can of whupass!
PD, I also heard the talking head on MSNBC say that. I haven't heard it echoed anywhere else; actually what I've heard is Tony Snow from Fox saying that it *was* Fox's turn and an anchor from CNN (don't remember who it was but she was female) saying that it was Fox's turn.
Methinks the 'talking head' guy is just a sour grapes rabble-rouser.
