Default Newbie......

What is a newbie? It seems everyone here seems to have their own idea. We are all newbies at something. Even within this business. Is newbie a pejorative?

A newbie is someone who started off after you did.

If you've never received at least a 4 figure check in this business, you're a newb.....

I used to say that about 5 figure checks, but if i did that now, i'd likely eliminate 90% of those coming onboard in last 3-4 years.

By this time next year, I might say "3 figure"...heh.

Oh, so a check for $100.50 doesn't count as a five figure check? That explains a lot.

I've made about 144 bucks in the adult "web master" industry within the past 3 years, so am I considered a newbie?
I don't think $$$ should be used as a main determining factor here guys

Yeah, but you have other stuff going that you don't consider to be "webmastering" that should be brought into the equation

My guess is hes doing as well as 90% of the Zoo.

This is a long time game now my friends. And you have to work on it hard every day.

Your misunderstanding me Toby,
$$$ is important. I just didn't want this thread to end up following the $$$ trail as the final factor of what qualifies a newbie. thats all man.
I just know how you people are, and when $$$ becomes part of the conversation/equation, then you all will just run and stick to that as a major importance of determining what a newbie is. And I just want other things said and considered.

At the end of the day, it is all about money. That is why we are here. If you have been trying to make a living for two years and can't make bank, you are a newbie. Period. JMHO
If, on the other hand, you launch a product that makes you rich in six months, you sure as shit ain't no newbie. Length of service has nothing to do with it. Success does.
Money talks and bullshit strolls around the corner whistling Dixie.

I would equate that more with success rather than newbieism.

If you have been doing this (or trying to do this shit) for 5 or 6 years and are not making it you are not a newbie. You are not successful but you are not a newbie. Some might consider you to be a failure perhaps but not a newbie.

The most successful newbie in history has got to be JK Rowley. Not one bling loudmouthed motherfucker that has ever posted on any adult board or run any adult business could touch dat. I still say its the money. Six years of failure, is still newbi-ism IMHO

Just for sarettah sake here, rhetorical. I'd like you to clarify something in your newbie question. When you ask about newbies? are these newbies in the web master adult side of the industry that you want to clarify about? or newbies just in general relating toward any adult industry aspect of promotion?
I mean example like maybe Joe Shmoe builds & sells sex toys thru the internet,
he makes mucho, mucho $$$ at it, But for the life of him, he can't make the background of his web page #000000. So? is he still a newbie, or what?

And Spaz...If you try to stick the word "diversify" in here, I'll bitch slap you silly dude

I'm not sure how you can keep money out of the equation. If someone has been an adult webmaster for 10 years but has never figured it out and has only made a few thousand bucks over that time, they're still a newbie, plain and simple. They're not new to the business but they still don't know what they need to know to be successful.

That would be like saying that I'm a "chef" just because I can cook a little. If I opened a restaurant it would be a dismal failure, but if I was able to keep it running for 10 years even though it never made a profit, would I be a "chef" or just some idiot that can cook a little?

What he said. I guess what I was on about is the fact that so many people who are doomed to be dismal failures but pontificate like playas, have gotta be newbies IMHO.
So, you give a new "newbie" a leg up and it pays off in spades if he/she succeeds, but listening to the advice of an "experienced" newbie is folly. I see so many bounce around before they crash and burn. Some flame out like the Challenger (don't mention the s word) but they were always newbies with nothing to add but added it with great confidence and panache. I think you need to sort out the shit from the Shinola when you listen to opinions. Especially on a business board.

great points, and I totally agree

up until about 2 years ago I was a poor, broke webmaster, but I had been doing this for 2 years already....after 2 years I considered myself a newbie...and shit, I still consider myself a newbie in a lot of areas of adult, but overall I have surpassed newbiedom and then some these days...it just took me a while to find my place, but I am very glad I did, I work with some of the best people in online adult and I am a part of some of the most innovative products that have launched recently

Let me state to the immigrate blunt burning yuppie...

...There is no freaking burn out or any fade away, and for that matter there is no fucking newbie either. its funny when one can slap 1/2 a mill $$$ in someones face, and they're no longer a fucking "newbie". But if he joins a board with his pathetic little porn web links sites and pretty html pictures with flash banners they're just a wasted newbie to run off.

if thats all this thread boils down do, with the final answer AGAIN being $$$. Then why the fuck ask in the first place?

"immigrate blunt burning yuppie..."

Now, I know you wrestle with the English language. I believe you refer to the sixth grade as your senior year, but dude....wtf is that? Here is where your lack of education embarrasses you. Did you mean a: immigrant or b:ingrate. Depending on what you answer, the entire meaning of your post changes. Isn't basic education free in the United States? I am beginning to think that it got canned by some Republican government twenty years ago. But hey, we have Julius, so what can I say? Come back, big boy.

I'm the one who started the money as a measure of a newbie thing. I originally typed it being a bit of a smartass and just not wanting to do something traditional like trying to put a time frame around newbie-ism.

But as I thought about it, it actually made a lot of sense to me seriously. Yes, it would also be a measure of success, but in this business money does also equate to both knowledge and experience. And beyond that aptitude for innovation, work ethic and any other nmber of factors.

We're all in this business because of the money. There is no honor in being in porn, this isn't a job you do out of passion or desire for public service or any other higher calling. Kids (well other than GonZo's if he had any) dont grow up going "I WANNA BE A PORN LORD!".

The majority of people are largely drawn here for one of two reasons:

1) Business people and entrenpeneurs are drawn to it as a source of easy money, at least compared to many other options. For each person it comes down to risk versus rewards and they'll come and go based on their own tolerances.

2) People who for whatever reason do not fit in with the normal work force. There are lots of these with lots of different stories. Some are "artistic" and just dont like the constraints of 9-5. Some just flat out do not have the discipline to go to a normal job every day. Many others may have various demons in their past that make them virtually unemployable. And then there are those who are have a similar psychology to the average criminal or con man. They consider people who work hard to be chumps....they come in attracted to the quick buck and will scam in this industry. It's a gold mine for these types.

Now before everyone flames me, there are certainly exceptions to this. Like any other industry some people just land here by circumstance. They are open minded enough to not be hung up on the stigma of "porn", and a job opportunity or other scenario came along that sucked them in and they've been here every day since doing a job just like they would if they were going to work at some traditional brick and mortar job. But I daresay most of these didn't PLAN to be here.

Great post. I don't fit, but most do. However, I never planned to be here. I had an opportunity to get into this business years ago, but walked away because I still had some mountains to climb. I did everything I wanted to do and way more than I ever dreamed of. This came along at a time when I was thinking of packing it in anyway and the money was so enormous, that I got hooked. The rest is history.

It takes a lot for me to put someone on ignore, but your sheer stupidity has driven me too it. I think it might only be the third time I have ever done this. But you qualified big time. Totally ignorant and really unprofessional posts. I actually don't need this shit in my life. It is a waste of ink. So poof, you be gone.

Rcourt, no offense, but I don't follow you. You seem to be saying that someone isn't a newbie if they've got time under their belt and money is not a determining factor. That makes no sense, as I've already stated. Five years from now, if you aren't successfully profiting from your adult business ventures but are still posting here on Oprano, I would have to say you were still a newbie.

If you go to the beach and someone teaches you to surf for the first time, you are a newbie and the other surfers will probably make fun of you and laugh at your mistakes, but some of them might take you under their wing and teach you the techinques they know.

Six months from now, if you've surfed every day and applied what the pros had taught you, you might be considered a good surfer. You certainly wouldn't qualify as a great surfer, because greatness could never be achieved in such a short period. At that point you are no longer a newbie, but you're still far from being an expert.

3 years from now, if you've continued to practice and hone your skills and have some natural athletic ability and talent, you may be considered a great surfer and called an expert.

However, if, after 3 years all you can do is sit on the beach and tell newbie surfers how to shoot the curl and cut a wave and sound like an expert, and all those newbies say, "Wow, he really knows his shit," but when you get on the board all you can do is wobble and wave your arms and look like an idiot, you're still a FUCKING NEWBIE!

You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.

Actually, in the jargon of surfing (going way back) that makes you a HoDad, not a newbie. A HoDad s someone who has been around long enough to know what to do but is still very poor at the execution of it. A Newie would be someone that was new to the sport. A newbie that picks it up pretty quickly is still a newbie.

as in: "Hey, that kid is pretty good for a newbie."

But a newbies still tends to make newbie mistakes, picking the wrong wave sometimes, eating it in a pearl dive, whatever.

In this industry, as in all businesses, there are those that will make it as a business owner, those that will attempt it as a business owner and not make it, those that will always be an employee (and that is not meant as an insult, some people are quite happy not having the responsibility of ownership) and thse that hang around on the fringe.

To make money the qualifier of newbieism is wrong (imho) because of the shit you see every day in this industry. You see brand new newbies that can come in looking like they walk the walk and talk the talk, go to a couple of shows, establish themselves on the boards as a bro and then start ripping people off left and right. Are they making money, hell yes, are they still newbies, hell yes and they are making a big newbie mistake is shitting on the community that welcomed them. Unfortunately in this industry, as in many others (look at hollywood especially) you can do that shit and your only punishment is you have to go buy a fucking camera for someone.

I lost my train of thought in the middle of that and instead of editing it in I am going to just put it here:

Continuation of this paragraph:
"In this industry, as in all businesses, there are those that will make it as a business owner, those that will attempt it as a business owner and not make it, those that will always be an employee (and that is not meant as an insult, some people are quite happy not having the responsibility of ownership) and thse that hang around on the fringe."

Just because someone is not a successful owner/operator of their own adult online business does not make them a newbie (even though they ain't bringing in the big bucks). There are many employees in this biz who are respected and looked up to, they will probably never be rich, because employees rarely do get rich, although they may make a decent living at it.

There are people that will keep trying and trying and never become succesful owner/operators. That does not mean that they don't know how to build sites or design or write scripts. Usually (imho) the ingredient that is missing there is not knowing how to sell. Sales is a talent, arguably, it is a talent that can be learned but a talent nonetheless. Some people are natural born salesmen, for many it is an uncomfortable position. If you have some capital to work with or if you find the right partner(s) then lack of salesnamship may be overcome. But some never fnd that right combination and so they never hit the success oute. That does not mean they are newbies. They know what to do, they know how to do it, hell, they may even know when to do it (which is often key to make or break of course) but they have never put the pieces all together successfully.

I'm very successful in my field of the Adult Industry, have been for almost 7 or 8 years now. Allot of my success is due to people like yourself Mighty One, With your professional web mastering skills from your end of the industry.
I realize allot of the newbie term here at The big O is more dedicated to traffic, web mastering and porn movie sponsor. At times you'll find a sticky about a new cam promoting tool or a cartoon webmaster drawing site.
I don't have anything to do with these field of the adult world.
So I'll just keep providing the content, and you just keep promoting it.
And we'll leave the sponsor to continue to be the middleman.
And we'll let it go at that. Deal?

OK, then a newbie is someone that is brand new to the industry. The rest are either pros or hodads and the vast majority are the latter.
