New Old Tricks in the Porn World

Ahh, the new old tricks in the porn world continue. As someone who works mostly as a porn affiliate, you learn over time that there are all sorts of ways that your traffic can disappear. While I won't name names here, I will post up a couple of funny stories, and I am sure everyone else has a few too. These are all recent for me.

One program has webmaster links on their galleries that are actually a larger graphic (200x200) positioned as the last clickable graphic on the page, and they are mostly their grand name and a small "webmasters". Clicking it takes you to a "enter main site" and "webmasters here" link. Entering the main site, not remarkably, loses all affiliate tracking.

Another program puts up image galleries, and then after a while starts to have random images drop out and go 404. The 404 goes to a page that encourages the surfer forward, while stripping off the affiliate code and replacing it with their own "house" account.

Another program randomly 6 months ago started redirecting mobile surfers out of their hosted galleries and website clicks to their mobile "portal" site. The problem? They stripped out the affiliate code and replaced it with their own house account, effectively cutting webmasters out of all of the mobile traffic.

Anyone else got some fun stories of what is done to make affiliate money disappear?

Oh, I want to add that the program with the mobile redirects? I contacted them more than a month ago, and they fixed it, and suddenly my traffic to them doubled. Remarkably, about 2 days ago, my traffic dropped nearly in half. I check a gallery, and not surprisingly, I am getting redirected to their main mobile portal site with their default 10001 NATS account instead of my own.

It's all shaving. Shaving via mobile is just one of the latest and most popular ways that programs are cheating their affiliates.

I remember talking to the AdultDateLink people several years ago about setting up a white label dating site for me to use for one of my better dating domains. I was to make 50% of the joins. As I always do when working with a new company, I signed up as a customer to see what happens... what they go through and what I get compensated for. I've never seen a site do so many upsells. If I remember right (and they probably still do this now) there was 2 pre checked boxes on the join page, then after you logged in you were hit with a box / offer that looked like it was something you were suppose to click on but it was another up sell that charged your cc if you clicked it. There were cross sales on the cancel page, etc... I calculated that most people who joined for the $30 a month membership were going to be hit with about $150 - $200 in charges from their first month.

So my first question was, do I make 50% of all of that and they said no, I only make 50% of the main site join. SO I would make 50% of $30 ($15) and they would keep the other $150 - $200. Now keep in mind when the guy gets his credit card and see several different $20- $40 charges they going to cancel everything. There was very little chance someone would rebill for more than 1 month unless they were dead or just didn't ever check their statements. Which the site didn't care, they were basically paying $15 PPS and banking about $150 per sale.

If I wouldn't have checked myself and asked I would have never known. You have to thoroughly check out the companies you promote to make sure they are no traffic leaks.

Will, I think between mobile and geo filtering,, I have seen more shit in the last few months than for a long time. Living outside of North America and Europe really does help, I have spotted plenty of sponsors who refuse me service because of location, or worse redirect me to useless shit that doesn't pay me anything as an affiliate.

It's an incredible waste of traffic.

When I was in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. I experimented with joining sites and generally surfing. It was a real pain. Hell, I couldn't even join my own site.....lol. Living in Asia must present a few challenges with geo getting more sophisticated. I used to tap dance on that shit, but it is getting really, really hard nowadays.

I have already caught a number of sites that lump HK in with china, and deny access. A number of tube sites have their head offices here, and to avoid legal hassles, deny access.

Things have gotten very sophisticated, but the site operates have not. It's sort of like a grease monkey 60s garage mechanic trying to work on a 2012 Skyline. He can identify some of the parts, but the technology is beyond them. When it works, great, when it doesn't, they have not clue why it doesn't.

My hat's off to you guys out there still making a living on nothing but affiliate money. I'm of the opinion there's not enough honest sponsors left to make the juice worth the squeeze.

I agree with HP. You have to do a lot more than promote. Its kinda like having a general store in a small town. You have to do a little bit of a lot and carry a good variety to survive.
But then again, I have always been a mom and pop....errrr "boutique" kind of business anyway.

So if I may ask please, Where is the money being made at on the internet porn world today? or is it still just a downhill venture for affiliates or sponsors?

My question was seriously intended Toby.
I reading a few threads especially all the ones about companies/sponsors/content provides/webmasters, and others heading down or going under. GGW for example. And many thread about sponsors and affiliates rip off and scam coding.
Is it all because of poor administration? or maybe these people are no longer making any profit therefore finding themselves forced to cheat and rip off partners, employes and customers. Is there no more money to be made on line? and if there still is, how then?
The records show the internet porn boom stabled off and has possibly dropped out under a few big named impresarios.
Yes i meant legally, i didn't think i needed to express on that.

I've thought about maybe getting back into producing content small time since i'm down here still, but im scared to invest time or money for penny pitiful results.

I couldn't agree with you more, and you'd also be wise to periodically check your existing links to make certain where they are directing, you may find there are changes.

Another thing I noticed last night, using a rev-share link noticed a pop up for $1 trials. If you want to promote sites using trials your programs should have those links specifically available, not as their option.

I don't know everyone here well enough to know what it is you do as a primary, but I'd be hard pressed to name more than two people that I know within' my niche that make a living as an affiliate. The majority of successful sites have done enough internal marketing and promoting to where they don't need affiliates as much. And as has been mentioned, the skimming and shaving has reared it's ugly head more in recent times.
