oops I fucked up the title, I mean how many paysite members can 1 good server handle?
I'm opening a new site and I only have 1 server, do you think tha's enough to handle 100 members? 1000? I dont have my server specs but just figure that it's an average server with average specs. Do you think 1 is enough for a new site? Last edited by newb at Nov 11 2003, 06:04 PM |

That's impossible to answer.
First off, it depends upon the nature of your content. Just pictures wont burn too much bandwidth. Throw in some large videos and you'll approach capcity much faster. Or run some webcam shows or something so you're doing live streaming and inviting all your members to stop by at the exact same time to see the show, and you'll find you need a lot more capacity. And further more the server itself is pretty much irrelevant now as even the slowest box installed these days is a darned fast piece of hardware. The pipe attached to it is going to be the limiting factor. More importantly, and please dont take this as a slam as I really intend it as candid advice....based on the questions you've been asking, you're probably not ready to run a paysite just yet. You may wanna get your feet wet with something more simple first. I used to suggest starting with premium AVS sites before trying to run a real paysite, but the AVS operators have been squeezed so hard by Visa's rules that they're rapidly becoming worthless... |

You are putting the cart before the horse. Garner traffic first. Send it to an affiliate. One of the advertisers here is a good idea. Once you have built up a traffic base , you can earn the money from sponsors to fund your paysite. |

Until you have traffic coming in, one server box should serve you just fine... But HP and Nick offer good advice... Lotsa Newbies in this biz have gone out quick trying to do too much too fast... Grow your traffic, let it pay for bigger/more servers...... Get your site up, get traffic coming, get paying members... Then worry about if it is big or fast enough.... Just imho of course....

Traffic is money in the bank.
Paysites are just one method of making a withdrawal.... |

if your getting them from me I would suggest 1 server per member h34r:
j/k, your host should be able to help you manage your servers.

it all boils down to usage. number of members is meaningless - add boxes as required due to usage...

Start off with one box, then grow from there. Your ISP will tell you when you are starting to overload the server - then add as you need.
