Google's "chrome" browser vs. Microsoft

The Google browser takes direct aim at Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer, which is by far the most widely used program for viewing Internet sites. The two companies already compete in Internet search engines, where Google holds a wide lead. Google has also developed Web-based alternatives to Microsoft's popular Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs.

While many people pay little attention to which browser they use, the choice makes a big difference to software companies. They can use the precious screen real estate to promote their own Web services. Moreover, they can tailor their browsers to ensure compatibility with their other products.

Chrome is going to punk out IE and a lot of the scammers in this business running the same old grift.

IE is already apparently down near about 52%. Chrome is going to take market from both of the big players, so even if they end up with 20% of the browser market (and I suspect more) they will push IE well under 50%, probably as low as 40% of the market.

I think we can look forward to IE8 being a "non-event" browser.

Gonzo, I think you are correct too: the time for the scammers, jammers, and malware pushers may be coming to an end. Firefox is already MUCH better than IE, and Chrome looks to really block things out well, making it pretty hard to use the browser as an attack weapon.

All that matters in all this is that I have yet another F'n browser to verify my websites in! I have never cared in the least what browser people use, it just has no impact on me whatsoever. But I do care that my stuff works properly.

The new Chrome browser looks like it handles everything quite differently than the standard IE/Mozilla way, so I am a bit worried about start up bugs. Overall, it does look like Google is on the right track with all this. They even did a "comic book" explaining the development and the system:

I installed the Beat they have out. So far, it just looks and acts like any other browser. Based on how it handles CSS, I have a feeling the browser engine is just another Mozilla version.

Let's hope they do better with this than they did with the spammers favourite tool, Gmail!

I downloaded it and played for a while. One thing is certain, it is fast to render pages, and appears to have a fairly low system overhead. Loaded to a similar location (same thread) firefox is showing 108,244k and chrome is showing 31,388k (moving slightly, it is active on something rather than passive) That alone is a huge difference

Smaller size and more efficient is definitiely a good thing....
