In Retrospect with regards to the adult industry.. what do you wish you had done that you did not do?

I'll be the first to jump out and say... I wish I had played merchant account games pre 2002. Most of the people who did made many many millions.

I wish I went to Montreal and prevent Yishai and MoJo jumping in bed...

I wish I kept my mouth shut about my business with Pushrod...

I wish I opened up a board in 2000 right after my retirement....

my 3 major mistakes...

I would have bought short one word domains and started a paysite 5-7 years ago.

I wish I had a clue what I was doing. I'm really upset withmyself with losing years doing worthless tasks.

Life is a bitch, I better make up the lost time.

same here

also, trying to go mainstream and public and in doing so miss the point where those who started when I did went on to become huge

not taking the business serious enough when I did start

sending too much traffic to bustyamateurs and relying on that solid recurring income and not really getting active in sending it to other programs...we all know how that turned out ;-)

spending waaaaaaaaay too much on a mailing operation in the philippines and my partner forgetting to make "security payments" to the right people

that whole housefire detroying nearly everything I had thing

amongst the many...but the new me doesn't dwell on past mistakes, it charges ahead and takes the world by the balls...

a. how do you know what Im worth?

b. I don't know what quiet or Labret are worth

As you know this business isn't the same as it was 5 years ago. Im just trying to move forward and grow like everyone else.

We see webmasters and companys dropping out every day due to the changes in our industry.

With my company I didn't cut corners. Im incorporated in Canada and in the USA. I use a quality hosting company and paid my visa fees and use quality cc processing. Epoch, CCBill and Ibill.

Like other in this business... I sat back, got burnt out, whatever you want to call it. But Im hungry again and moving forward. The one thing I wish I did was hit the boards earlier. I didn't take advantage of the networking opportunities until just recently. Since I have been on the boards I have met some great people and learn something new every day. If you don't learn something new every day then your not paying attention.

I agree they can suck up a day fast. I admit that I get wrapped up in them sometimes but some of the contacts I have made through them has been worth it. Because of the boards I found out about the Toronto Summit and will be going to Vegas in Jan. The seminars I attended were great and the ability to speak to some of the top people in the industry is well worth it.

As Serge said in a previous post, Oprano is more of a business board. Great... I will treat it as such.... post accordingly and save the fucking around for gfy.

Hard to argue with my biggest lament being too cheap to spend the $100 each (and then $70) on domains when they were there for the picking...

Difficult to imagine a better return on any possible investment...

In retrospect....

would have invested everything I had into Microsoft in 1979 and pulled it out in February 2000......

(also would have sent traffic to Crescent from 96 or so until 2000)

I would have sold my soul to the devil. I would have spammed out the mofo, and run "scams" like babenet, etc. Also, would have done some serious spyware early on. I could be retired by now.

This is a good thread. Hindsight is indeed 20/20

I would have definately grabbed more domains. Something that was plentiful back in 1996. I used to make fun of Webfather.

I would have worked harder back in the day. Money was easy, so I spent a lot of time goofing off, and playing games.

I would have been wiser with investments. I have blown a lot of money on some stupid projects. ( Of course I have made some great ones as well, batting about .400 )

I would have probably saved more money as well.

But overall, I cannot complain. I have been very blessed.

I wish I started collecting domains when Rick did.

It hurts just thinking about how nonchalant I was about it.

It makes me think of how it must have been back in the early days of the US/Canada immigration push from Europe when land was being given out for free.

I was thinking back today and I remembered that in '98 when hubby and I were thinking about getting into porn webmastering, we actually DID sign up to an affiliate program.
It was one of those "it will be YOUR paysite, you build your own front end or just use one of ours" things. And I actually got 2 people to join/sign up under me (Sare - it was Jace and BigTwistee, hehehe). I can't even remember what company it was (I just remember everything having a black background) and of course I never received a check. I only got credit for one join, too.

I wonder if I could go back through my old OLD email archives and hunt that down. Hrmm.

Anyhow after the second join didn't show up still after 3 days I figured it was a scam and didn't do anything else with it, or any other porn.

Yup, same here, believe it or not in the early 90's domains were actually free. I kick my own ass daily for not grabbing tons of them.

Of course back then it was a pain in the ass to find a place to park them too or anyone who even remotely understood DNS.

My first one was free, but I paid something like $40 a month for dial up UUCP email transfer and that only included one domain. ISPs of the day tilted their head and looked at you funny if you wanted two.

What really is ashame I remember when Network Solutions was charging $70 or so to register a domain. Looking at today's prices boy did we get fleeced.

Then again $70 isn't a lot for some of the domains that were sitting around at the time unregistered yet.

i always hear people bringing up domains and early days.
yes most of the great domains were reged before 99

BUT 2 of the biggest domainers are making their money from domains they reged after 2000. Excluding top 100 overall domains, i would say more money has been made from domains reged after 2000 than before.
