Vick, go easy on him...he doesn't know any better,
his life expereinces are very limited....I am looking forward to his trip "in the world",
should bring us back "new and improved" Labret
As far as the first part of my post, let me state it more clearly. I do not think you will find any studies that will back up your statement that "The inability to control that sort of reaction is a sign of lack of intelligence.
As someone who deals with intelligent people on a daily basis, I can tell you that kneejerking and lashing out during a debate is considered poor form in the extreme. In fact, in most cases, if you can be the one who caused the other person to lose their cool so to speak while maintaining your own, it is considered a victory of sorts.
Losing control over your ability to control yourself in the face of adversity is not an admirable trait. Society generally respects a level head. You will never see George Bush calling anyone a "dumb fuck".
Quote:
For you to assume that my mentioning of groups of higher intelligence means "academia" is naive at best and arrogant as all hell at worst.
Oh, you were referring to those roaming hordes of highschool educated geniuses?
Quote:
However, I believe that if you check, you might find some studies that will back up my assertion that you will find a higher propensity towards aqn emotional response from a higher intelligence group then a lower intelligence group.
I am not saying you wont get a reaction from people who are considered of higher intelligence, but it sure as hell will be different. Billy Bob and Scooter witnessing a flag burning will have a different response then someone with a phd in behavioral psychology.
Ill just wait for whatever you dredge up from google before I continue.
Also, to lump all of academia into one group is absurd. Comparing people doing graduate work in art history to people doing graduate work in forestry and genetics, you are dealing with two very different crowds.
To stereotype or lump every American into one group is not equally absurd?

I can imagine it must be quite complex.
I do not know what I find more tragic. That you find this an intelligent conversation or the inability to find humor in profanity.
I think George Carlin is a genius, and his use of profanity to color his speach is artful. I simply do not share your view on profanity.
a - still dancing
b - thank you
c - This is a somewhat intelligent conversation, it is going on currently between at least 3 (maybe someday 4) people with minds I have admiration and respect for
d - I also find Carlin a genius and incredibly humorous. But your using profanity as name calling is light years away from the work Carlin does

[Labret] - you have some form of intelligence but you seem to be lacking in practical application of your chosen field of study as evidenced by your statements
If you think all homo sapiens are alike because we share the common traits of eat, sleep, and shit you've really missed a lot and contradicted yourself
now I really have some tasks to attend to, I'll check back as time allows

We are not homo sapien. We are homo sapien sapien. One sapien denotes archaic forms. No surprise you put yourself in that category.
I find your belief in diversity to be quaint and charming.

That is one thing I will say you are correct about and I was wrong
But it was very nit picky
I agree with the sentiment expressed here, can't wait until you leave the US again
For being 32 and spending years taking an education (education is not given in most circumstances you must make it) you still have some very angry young man concepts

Growing up, we called this "ranking"... One upping an opponent until they got pissed off and resorted to either personalized profanity or violence.
Same game, different stage.

I bet you I can find a clip of him saying something close.
I can find tapes of Nixon losing it on a regular basis, Clinton, Johnson.. Many of the politicians of our time had a terribly short fuse... They had handlers to keep the public from seeing that side...
It may not be an admirable trait, but that does not mean it is not common. Why do so many of the "intelligentsa" work behind closed doors, with their only contact with the outside being their published writings. Because they do not know how to deal with people, they are scared of the outside world, they have paranoia running at levels well above the rest of the folks.

No, I was referring to the many people who are not part of academia.. The doctors, the lawyers, the engineers, the system designers, the programmers, the mailmen, the garbage men and the many other people in this world who may be of higher than normal intelligence but who choose to go out into the scarey world and live it rather than sit behind the scenes and study it.

Not necessarilly. Depends on the people. I have known many very intelligent people who held very closeminded opinions. I have also known many blue collar "normal" intelligence level folks who were extremely open minded. That has nothing to do with intelligence per se. There are many extremely intelligent people who believe in God and Jesus and a spiritual afterlife, whether that belief would seem logical to me or not. The belief systems of a person often shape many of their outwardly shown viewpoints of the world.

is this not a valid question? I await a reply Labret.

So you qualify us Fat Lazy Americans when given the oppurtunity. Don't you think the others who are discussing all this with you may feel that their sweeping generalizations would be qualified as well? I mean in the heat of debate it is normal to generalize to some extent to make a point. Pointing out the generalizations of others begs your own to be brought to the forefront as well.

Not a problem. Careful what you ask for however, what you hear you will not like. You want to see the monkies freak the fuck out, get me started on my support for Al Queda.
Years of bad foreign policy come home to roost. It was a nice wake up call. A beautiful mix of theology and politics resulting in a historic display of resistance.
What? You mean some people do not want to be a fat fucking ignorant American capitalist xtian? Surely you jest.

I for one, LOVE this exercize in futility!
It's been a while

Pleased to meet you.
Snob? I am a short pale pudgy tattoo'd geek, you would never be able to tell the horror that lurks beneath. I am not a snob, a snob would ignore you stupid bastards.

9/11 couldn't happen at the best possible time..wake up call during the strong President...who showed the world,
next time thing like that is going to happen on the American soil,
the middle east will be turned into the radio active desert.

How is this an exercise in futility if I get what I want from it?
I am not here to win hearts and minds. If I wanted friends I would go to YNOT and drink virtual coffee.
this si exercize in futility because your mind is in the tank...NOTHING but the trip abroad and learning the life can penetrate it.
you know that you can't change the views of the world, I know nobody can change your views, and how would YOU call it?
I beleive that "exercize in futility" sounds better than "impression sale"
;-))))
I will always react to America Bashing and Flag Burning
I firmly believe in America, as a great nation we are not without challenges. Any situation can be improved
As I have stated it is much easier to point the finger than work to correct the challenges
It is the weak who only complain and do nothing to improve the situation, causes and conditions of which they complain
and my reaction to [Labret] avatar is what started this (somewhat) interesting conversation
I don't consider myself a flag waving knee jerk, I am a patriotic American
Very grateful for the opportunities being an American affords. Also I am extremely grateful to all those who have gone before to enable these liberties and opportunities I enjoy

Use a nuke on whom exactly? Nuking the middle east for the actions of some Queda affiliates based out of Malaysia (or wherever) makes as much sense as nuking Ohio.

As a student of sociology your response here baffles me.
It is not simply the physical presence of your parents that prevent feelings of abandonment, but also emotional attachment.
Your father could be attending to all of his responsibilities and duties as a father and husband, but still leave you feeling as if he doesn't care a thing about you.
Your mother could stay home and care for you night and day, making sure you have food to eat and clean clothes to wear, but still make you feel as if you're unwanted.
Just because your parents are still together and you see them often doesn't mean that there is no chance of abandonment issues. Actually, your views of marriage and family speak loudly of your unhappiness with your childhood and deep-seated issues of abandonment and neglect.

i disagreed with so many of your points in that single post i just chose one that could be responded to in a very short couple of sentences.
unlike you i don't get paid to argue, so i'll just exit the conversation now and leave you and your buddies to crank up the impression count.
