Interesting thread.

Not sure what to add. Every time it seems all has been said, more is added.

Basically I agree, it's a medium and growing board, and where it goes will be a combination of management and the posters in general.

As for the past, present and future ... yeah, some will like the way it goes, some won't. Those who didn't, don't, won't are free to go elsewhere or stay and bitch. (We don't mind.)

But yes, where it goes will be a dynamic combination of the community at large. One can be a part of it and help form that destiny or not.

But I will laugh my head off at the one's who leave, come back later on and then bitch a blue streak when they had their chance and it has passed.

Since the connotation of "hired gun" is unpleasant, no, I must definitely would not like to be referred to that way. It's also silly. Who the hell would hire *me* to play "hired gun"? (I may be being to literal here.)

I post a lot because I like to. I've always posted a lot. Anybody who's memory goes back as far as 1997 can attest to that. I'm a writer, for heaven's sake. That's what posting is. Writing. My mod status is basically "thanks for being such a verbose person."

(Nick might have said "damned big mouth," but he didn't. I couldn't have argued with him if he had, though.)

I didn't realize that those three little letters compelled me to take a stand on the "direction" of anything. I'm glad, because I would have said "uh...thanks...no, I don't do 'directions.'"

It's always been my own personal opinion, based on the obvious, that a board finds it's own direction. OK...I have to stop that here. What the hell *is* a "direction," anyway? It sounds suspiciously like "we all have to be of the same headset and post the same way," which is something I'm thorougly against. I'm nice because I'm actually nice. It's not a board persona. I named the carrot smilie "Kirby" because of the alliteration involved, "Kirby" is my brother's childhood nickname, and I'm just quirky like that. People may find it annoying or childish or whatever...but like I give a flying fuck. (With me, being "nice" is a choice, not a sign of weakness. Nobody so far has elected to piss with me about it, but if someone had, it wouldn't have changed a damned thing. I'm not going to withdraw into a shell and sulk over it. I can piss with the best of them, however, the thrill of that pretty much sailed in the 90's.)

So...to end this, a dance.

To be totally honest, I was out of the business for a long time and I have absolutely no idea what some of these discussions are about, either. I use the phrase "Born Again Newbie" to cover situations like this.

Thank you very much for your kind words and I wish you the same. If and when I do err, I will at least have enough humility and honesty to stand up and admit it. Sorry to break the turn into the niceness farm the thread's taken, but want to make a few observations. Take 'em or leave 'em.

I hope the board does not go to pay to post. The discussion here is usually intelligent and above-par, even when just joking around. Paying folks to post brings in the stupidity crowd who fill the board with useless babble. (Not saying there's isn't a good share of useless babble here, but it's a different level of babble - hard to explain.)

The mention of a "hired gun" made me think not of paid mods steering conversations, but mods being encouraged to make and use fake names to troll the boards and get people reacting to dumbass statements. A huge pasttime over at GFY and encouraged at certain other places. (Or at least was at one point.) I hope this isn't the case either, as it drives away the veterans and intelligent posters and again, draws the stupidity crowd.

That being said, I know that both of these methods increase pageviews, which drives the advertising, which is the bottom line for the board. It's a fine line between quantity and quality - I hope in all of the changes you guys are planning, you're leaning on the side of quality. I'd hate to see this board become what Netpond has become, and y'all know how much I love Netpond and Meat and Aga. Well, what Netpond's board used to be, anyway.

Just try not to kill the quality while going for the increase in pageviews, eh? That's all we as members can hope for.

What will live with me from this place is priceless - some of the best memories and friendships I will ever hope to have, that will last me through my lifetime. All the rest is just bullshit to fill the time.

Uh oh, I agree with Carrie.

It is the nature of this industry to take short cuts, even with each other. In the case of building a board, there's a temptation to want to inflate posts and traffic. This is really what I meant by "hired help"....a better term might be "incented posters".

Bottom line, whenever you're doing something where people are posting for the sake of adding posts, the quality is gonna go down. Post quality is at it's highest when people only post when they actually have something to say. There's probably a happy medium somewhere inbetween.

But the good news is that if you start paying for posts, I'm sure MasterP will come back.

I've kind of avoided this thread because I've come to admire Newton and his mind and we've even talked some business and of course have a long history with CJ and felt weird.

CJ is one of the people I admire most in this industry and one of my favorite people in general. I don't always agree with her but know she always does things as she feels she must and doesn't back down.

CJ, I've been threatening to make it out that way for 7 years now and am really close to making it finally happen. So, make sure to have plenty of green tea and sexy women with hot aussie accents on standby.

Sorry to break the turn into the niceness farm the thread's taken, but want to make a few observations. Take 'em or leave 'em. I hope the board does not go to pay to post. The discussion here is usually intelligent and above-par, even when just joking around. Paying folks to post brings in the stupidity crowd who fill the board with useless babble. (Not saying there's isn't a good share of useless babble here, but it's a different level of babble - hard to explain.) The mention of a "hired gun" made me think not of paid mods steering conversations, but mods being encouraged to make and use fake names to troll the boards and get people reacting to dumbass statements. A huge pasttime over at GFY and encouraged at certain other places. (Or at least was at one point.) I hope this isn't the case either, as it drives away the veterans and intelligent posters and again, draws the stupidity crowd. That being said, I know that both of these methods increase pageviews, which drives the advertising, which is the bottom line for the board. It's a fine line between quantity and quality - I hope in all of the changes you guys are planning, you're leaning on the side of quality. I'd hate to see this board become what Netpond has become, and y'all know how much I love Netpond and Meat and Aga. Well, what Netpond's board used to be, anyway. Just try not to kill the quality while going for the increase in pageviews, eh? That's all we as members can hope for. And no matter how many times I tried to re-write this, I just couldn't get my point across well enough and explain what I'm trying to convey - so if you get pissed at anything I've said, please know that I didn't mean for it to piss anyone off. Just disappointed at what a place I used to love has become and don't want to see it happen again over here. Hoping it won't.

EVERYONE IS TOO FUCKING FAR AWAY!!! Otherwise, you could all drop by and join us on our deck, enjoying the ocean, good friends, good food, good times ..... it puts a whole new perspective on what's important. What will live with me from this place is priceless - some of the best memories and friendships I will ever hope to have, that will last me through my lifetime. I've kind of avoided this thread because I've come to admire Newton and his mind and we've even talked some business and of course have a long history with CJ and felt weird. CJ is one of the people I admire most in this industry and one of my favorite people in general. I don't always agree with her but know she always does things as she feels she must and doesn't back down.
