In Australia, we don't have the same value placed on our flag as america does - yay its a flag ... but it isn't used as a symbol of freedom in the same way that yours is. I have always found it ironic that those who proclaim themselves to be proud defenders of the Constitution, Democracy and Freedom of Speech and everything the US stands for (symbolism) are usually the most intollerant, unreceptive and hostile towards those who express themselves, in accordance to those same beliefs.
I repeat what I said earlier ... the only appropriate moderator for a disucssion of great geopolitical issues between Buff and Joe would have to have the style, wit, intelligence - and, dare I say, substance - of grogan.

ya know, even joking about that i feel wierd ... while our culture doesn't teach us to respect our flag, (we've tried to replace it about 20 times in my lifetime to get that bloody union jack off LOL) I respect the people who have represented my country & that flag. I appreciate the right of Americans to not have their flag disrespected, but you have to remember its USA'S beloved flag - no one else is going to feel the same patriotic way about it as americans do, and those that hate what America stands for will hate the flag.

As CJ said, our flag is just a flag, we don't place a such emphasis on it as others may......
Us Aussies are also a pretty laid back bunch (bordering on apathic actually), we are split between remaining a monarchy or becoming a republic. When we have referedums here to change things in the constitution, most Aussies really don't give a fuck, and historically, referendum questions are more likely than not to come back in the negative.
On the flag.. well, many of our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers fought and died under that flag in the last 100 years in the 3 big wars (and the wars that were not really wars for some reason), and I am one of the many who see that as a good enough reason NOT to change.
But we live under the southern cross, NOT the Union Jack.
In real legal terms, England has had SFA impact on us since the Australia Act was passed in 1986, removing the last legal ties through our court system.
Australia is the land of freedom, no question.
Now all we need is a Bill of Rights and we would be set.
