The first one cost more than the second because that client wanted something really artsy, but all of our work is custom and quoted on a per project basis.

well, here is the thing, if you are as expensive you say, which I don't mind because I usually pay anywhere from $150-300 depending on the quality and time that goes in, I would think you would need to be creating eerything from "scratch" and not modifying an existing theme to achieve your goal
I personally don't mind you doing that, hell, I do it all the time, but don't charge tons of money for it when you didn't create anything but the graphics
and FYI, don't advertise that your blog themes are all css, when this is plain as day

sorry man, I don't mean to shit on you, but I just get sick of designers modifying existing themes and then saying they have to charge a lot of money cause of the time involved.....you aren't the first, and probably won't be the last

LOL, whatever man. There are only so many general layouts for a blog and after that everyone is copying whoever the first person to do that layout was. The design of a blog has very little to do with the underlying template, but we do everything from templates to full turnkey blogs with all plugins and ads in place. If the client wants a layout that has never been done before, we will do one from scratch, otherwise we'd be idiots not to start with a basic existing template.
As for css, I don't know what your problems is, but we obviously used css on that blog. The fact that html was used for certain elements is neither here nor there, it was a sample of our design work, not to prove to you that we can handle css.
But based on your prices, like I said, you can't afford us, so it's all a moot point. I never claim that our design prices have anything to do with the time involved in modifying or creating a template from scratch, our prices are based on the quality of our designs.
Next time a designer shows you a sample of their work, you really don't need to critique it. Either contact them for a quote or ignore the post.

css blog theme - http://www.bestbabesblog.com/ - the only thing not css are the posts, and that is due to the rss being pulled
but let me get this straight, you are charging over $300 per theme for code that you copy and pasted and did new graphics for?

next time a designer posts his work and claims it is one thing and it is not, I will call them out also, because when I ask for a css custom theme and a designer shows me tables and copied code from a free theme, well, that just ain't right

We don't design "themes" and I don't base my prices on the time it takes to create a "theme", I charge clients for the time it takes to design the logo and the graphics for a blog. Just about every WP blog on the Net is a modification of an existing theme. Those themes were created by programmers, not designers and are free for anyone to use and modify.
We are a design company, not a programming company. If you hire me to design a brochure, we don't make the paper and invent the printing press, you are hiring us to design something that looks good and will sell your product or service effectively. If you hire us to design a blog template, we do as much work as is required to achieve the product the client is looking for.
We don't take advantage of anyone.

Jace, I owe you an apology. I obviously didn't read your initial post correctly and I see now that you specifically said you were looking for someone to design "themes" and "100% css".
As we've established, I do not design "themes", we design blogs. And although we use css and are very proficient at it, we do not typically design anything using 100% css.
I followed Forest's lead and just took the opportunity to present our blog design services, even though that's not what you were looking for.

no, that would be like saying to an artist, "don't charge a lot of money for a painting when all you did was finish what the previous artist did"
as anyone that spends all day in blogs knows, the most difficult part of a blog theme is the css coding, the graphics can be done in a few hours...and I can show you PLENTY of blog themes that I have had done that have graphics just as good, if not better, than what you showed above, for half the price....BUT the reason why a blog theme gets pricey is because converting that theme to css is a total fucking chore, I know blog guys that can spend 2 days on getting the css perfect, which is why they cost as much as they do
now, when you take an existing theme, create new graphics for it, and then charge more for someone who does it all from scratch, well, that is laughable to anyone who knows better
but like you said, you are a graphics company, and not a "programming" company....even though you be hard pressed to find many design companies these days that weren't also proficient in css, because css is completely about design elements

sorry I got all feisty with you man, I just got 20 emails this morning showing me total crap work....one guy even showed me a free theme as his portfolio....free theme quality...LOL
