The state of porn

Like many of us in the industry, I get a lot of free porn when I go to shows. Either someone is looking for a distributor or the production company pimps themselves by putting their vids as schwag in the bags or any old number of things.

You know what I am talking about - you've all got a stack of DVDs from these companies in your house, so I don't feel a need to name any names. just suffice to say, at the last two shows I've ended up with ten videos from a single production company.

At any rate, I've been doing a lot of travelling lately, and when I get home, I like to spend a little quality time with my honey - as we all do, I am sure. And I thought "Hey! Why not watch one of these videos and get a lil' sumthin'sumthin' goin'?"

And so I plucked a video from my stack o' show schwag and stuffed it in the DVD player.

It was wretched, y'all.

I put in a movie to get turned ON, and all I wanted to do was cry. I was trying to figure out what was wrong with her eye. Was she uncomfortable? What was happening with her hair? Was it supposed to be caught... like that? And why did she look unhappy? Is "misery" the new "sexy?" I couldn't figure it out. So I hit fast-forward to see if it got better.

Y'all, it didn't.

After trying to watch this abortion set to celluloid (conversation in my house sounded a lot like this: "OK, so fast forward? yeh? And... Again. Hmm. Still sucks. Next? Oh, I give up. Wanna watch something that doesn't suck?"), I gave up and put in something from a studio that always has decent content.

So here's my question to y'all: So you think there's a genuine interest in porn where the chicks are all cow-eyed at the camera and looks miserable, or is it just that as consumers, we take what we're given?

And I could not agree with you more. It seems like the more and more sites that I review the more disheartening it is to see what they offer their members. I ask myself time and again "How does this shit sell.... like ever!"

But yet it seems to be that way. And here is what amazes me, there are several very good programs out there with very well known sites that used to set the standard for well done net content that have started to BUY garbage. It is like their attitude is 'I've made my money.. time to put this shit on auto-pilot' it is one of the main reasons why i look to smaller companies to make me my cash.

Different porn appeals to different people. I had a girl pick up a DVD at the show and ask me and a bunch of other people if I'd watch it and my immedaite reply was "if I was in the mood for that type of porn yeah, I'd watch it." and most everyone agreed with my statement.

You and your boyfriend may not have been their target market. Maybe it was an amateur style DVD and you were looking for more slick style studio stuff or vice versa. Different porn sells to different people.

There are SOOOO many different styles of porn that sell and, of course, some are better sellers than others. It's the way it is and thank goodness for that because the day one porn fits all is the day this biz dies. Fortunately that day will never come because there are always different sexual tastes out there to cater too.

It's like the solo girl market. It drives me NUTS when people say they have to only look a certain way. That is pure and utter bullshit. That's only the case if you want to specialize in a certain look. There is nothing wrong with that at all but it's not the ONLY wazy to go. ALL types of girls will sell as a solo act and obviously some will sell better than others but just because they don't fit into that one type of category of a woman doesn't mean you can't sell them. They may have a smaller market but that doesn't mean they can't be sold if marketed and presented properly.

I think as a whole people started taking what they could get becasue there sure as fuck wasnt a lot of variety early on.

I think you see this when a genre becomes popular now with little to choose from. Heres an example... fetish wasnt that big a few years ago so you get stuck with some really homely looking women tied up in black painted room to give the dungeon effect.

Thats ok ... but for fuck sakes . . . dont put your damn garage door opener in the scene!!! If you want to see an example go watch anything produced by "The Evil" Rick Savage. Ho hum...

I had a whole conversation Friday night with a bunch of folks about "porn for women" (yeh, I commented on the dead thread too) and I argue that "porn for women" is "porn that doesn't suck." It's that simple. I like amatuer - I am a huge Abby Winters fan - and I get down on slick production (Ninn Worx makes me smile) too, so it's not even a matter of that. It's simply that all the talent sucked monkeys for spooge.

I'm not looking for "porn for women" - which is kinda my point, darlin'. Saying "porn for women" is further ghettoization of female sexuality, and it's garbage. It's also completely unnecessary, since I am happy watching Red Light or Vivid and just about anything in between. 'Cos hey! Guess what? Chicks have as many varied interests as men do when it comes to sex.

The primary difference I see is that women are less willing to put up with crap quality and will decide to get their kicks elsewhere. That's why women buy less porn than men - because we don't want to pay $50 for a DVD that is very likely going to blow when we can buy kickass boots for the same amount of money and grab an issue of Cheri.

For starters I like to pick up a lot of swag for all my non-porn friends. Truth be told i don't look at most of the DVDs. Once in awhile there will be something I wish to add to my collection, but there is a reason why a lot of porn is the way it is... consumer demand. You could look at it like a chicken and egg thing... does the supply dictate the demand or does the demand dictate the supply?

Either way... i think we can all agree that a majority of consumers are scary and you don't even need to be a model!

Liz, IMO, porn companies realize they can make more money producing garbage than they can producing high quality stuff. Take that Pirates movie for example. They had a huge budget and spent a ton of money on quality stars and fancy realistic sets. But, the video only had moderate success and I'm sure after expenses, they made far less profit than they would have if they'd just cranked out another run-of-the-mill porn movie and kept the overhead to a minimum.

Supply and demand will control the market. When enough people get tired of the crappy stuff and stop buying it, or start only buying the good stuff, the companies producing the crappy stuff will have to step up their game again.
