I think everyone is reading too much into it. David Chase decided on the non-ending to let everyone make what they would of it.

it was for me for a long time also, then something happened

I think when they started realizing the show was going to be over they stopped caring about the scripts

the last good scene was when tony was running through the snow when the FBI raided Sack's house, after that the shark had been jumped and they knew it

The last few episodes were quite good. Though there's no way you could run a long term show at that pace, you wouldn't have any characters left alive.

I thought so too... I've been waiting for the Sopranos to get good again ever since Furio did his first collection at the whorehouse, but I am glad I hung in there to see it through.

This season was a big improvement, and I was glad to see what they did to Phil. haha I didn't like the ending at first, but I read an article that put it in perspective. It talked about the diner scene giving you the feeling of how a guy like Tony Soprano lives. Always looking over his shoulder, etc... never knowing what's going to happen next. With what they just did to Phil, that feeling was intensified. Tony didn't know what was going to happen in the next few minutes, and now neither do we. I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me.
