Gore is a politician. He picked Lieberman as his running mate in 2000 for some of the same reasons that Bush picked Chenyburton.
The fact that he endorses someone else four years later has nothing to do with either Lieberman's competency to be President nor his so-called loyalties.

I'm not a fan of Dean. I'm not particularly a fan of Gore, although I would have prefered Gore to Bush. If I end up in a voting booth facing the choice between Dean and Bush, I may just write in a vote for the same guy I as when my choice was McGovern v Nixon - because even dead, Harry Truman could do a better job than either of them.

Quite honestly I think it came down to policy. Gore never saw eye to eye with Lieberman because lieberman was a rare Democrat. Fiscally liberal (somewhat) but socially VERY conservative.
He is VERY religious. And not pro business enough to get away with that stance.
I am positive Gore new a president like Lieberman would be almost no different then Bush. Especially in his foreign relations policy.
