It now appears that within a year, civilians will be able to choose if they want to get vacinated for smallpox. I think this is a good idea, let individuals make their own decisions.

I for one will get mine, what about you?

I haven't decided yet. I want to read up on the pros and cons a bit more. I had it done when I was little, but apparently that's no longer "there". Makes me wonder if kids getting vaccinated now will need to do it again.

My understanding is that the effective life of a vaccination is about 20 years. I had it in the 50s and 60s as a kid, and 70s while in the service. I'll probably get it again if it becomes available ... my "significant other" is what they are defining as front-line medical personnel and will be getting it shortly.

I got the vaccination twice, Mike -- once in 1990 and once in 1994. It's kind of nasty, because you have a semi-open sore on your upper arm/shoulder about the size of a quarter for almost a week, and you have to be careful not to touch it or rub anything against it.

I'm not getting it again. Why'd I get it twice? Because Army records-keeping is a bureaucracy.

I think I might have gotten it when I was a baby, but that was 30 years ago so I think I would do it again. I prefer to get it from a new batch.

From what I've read, they won't be available to the general public until 2004. I'll wait and make my decision then - that will give them 1+ years to see what effects, if any, it's having on others

Hah! In that case since I was born in Romania , President Ceausescu and antourage will have been tracking me all these years. But where are they now? Executed military style in a cold stone courtyard years ago. It all works out in the end. The universe has a way of balancing things out

I'll gladly go to jail before I'll subject myself or anyone I care about to being injected with not only a live virus, but poison (mercury) to boot. I've been doing a lot of research on the subject lately, because I'm filing a formal waiver with the school district refusing to have my daughter vaccinated again for Hepatitis B, which they've made a condition for students entering the 7th grade.

The people who benefit most from vaccination are the manufacturers, and to add insult to injury (literally), when their product harms or even kills someone, they're not even held accountable. There's something terribly wrong with this picture!

The number of people suffering from autoimmune related disorders has risen astronomically, yet the medical community and pharmaceutical companies continue to hand out antibiotics and immunosuppresant drugs (like Prednisone) for everything from the sniffles to hemmorhoids -- and we're supposed to believe that one has nothing to do with the other? I'm not buying it.

My daughter was diagnosed with a rather rare autoimmune disorder just before she turned three, and they said the disease had been active for at least a year already. No one has ever even suggested that the slew of immunizations she received might have thrown her immune system into such a tizzy that it attacked her own body... but I'm not entirely convinced that's not what happened. Unfortunately, we're long past the 3-year statute of limitations imposed upon filing a claim with the National Vaccine Injury Program. I don't care so much about the financial aspects of such a claim (though it might be nice to know that I wouldn't have to worry about staying a corporate slave in order to remain insured and defray the costs of the physical therapy she needs for the rest of her life) as much as having SOMETHING to point to as the cause of her condition.

It could have been worse; she could have become autistic, paralyzed or even died. If I had known then what I know now, I'd never have agreed to her being vaccinated, considering the genetic predisposition toward immune system malfunctions in my family. Back then I still believed the hype that doctors knew best and had their patients' best interests at heart. 11 years and thousands of hours' worth of research later, I know better.

Don't fall prey to the hype... even if somehow smallpox were introduced into the population, it would never reach the epidemic proportions of the past due to advances in sanitation and technology. However, once they start mass vaccination, I guarantee we'll start seeing people drop dead from the disease, because their immune systems will not be able to fight it properly. And how many people will be seriously injured or killed not from the disease itself, but by some other agent in the vaccine to which they have an adverse reaction?

It scares the shit out of me that so many Americans are willing to just blindly trust the government with their very lives, and the health and lives of their children without first examining not only the very real potential dangers to their health, but the motivation of those who stand to profit from creating a need for their products.

Just say NO to vaccination!
