A much talked about topic in recently and many webmasters are wondering if and when .xxx willl be available... Bob Parson, president and founder of GoDaddy.com and a speaker of the Domain Roundtable has confirmed it's acceptance in his blog.

.XXX has been approved.

A few days ago, ICANN -- the quasi-government corporation that oversees the internet’s naming and numbering system, approved the .XXX top level domain. .XXX will operate much like .COM does now -- meaning it will be a domain name people can type into their browsers to take them to a website -- but similar to the way .GOV is reserved for governmental organizations, .XXX will be reserved for pornographic or adult content websites.

Current expectations are that .XXX will be available for purchase and use by year’s end.

What are your thoughts on it?

My thoughts, it's just another domain extention and people are making a bigger deal out of it than it really is

As long as I can keep my .com's and I'm never herded into the .xxx against my will then I see no real harm.

I still think the price of them is fucked up though...

I don't think that would be feasible, .COM is too international.

It would be pointless too because who is going to ban adult sites from country domains where this legislation wouldn't exist? I'm sure you could still run an adult site from .NL, .DK, .SE, .CZ, .RU etc. ;-)

And even then one could still run anything they want just from an IP address ;-)

The only thing that will happen is that people who run adult sites on a .XXX domain will be blocked out by countries that for example already block out SEX.COM.

I said it on GFY, and I'll say it here.

Rick Schwartz put it the best. So much money has been put into the branding of .com, that it's the only domain tld worth getting.

The xxx suffix will just be blocked by some countries and most mail filters.

I cannot see a single advantage in owning one.

Only if you're lucky enough to get a good type-in, I'm sure www.porn.xxx would be quite lucrative to own ;-)

From Parsons:

Quote:
.XXX is not a perfect solution.
Is .XXX a complete solution to eliminating accidental access to adult sites, or for parents and others to completely control access to these sites, or to filter their incoming email? The answer to this question would be an absolute no.

Adult website operators will not voluntarily let go of their .COM names.
The reason .XXX is not a perfect solution, is because most of the adult content sites currently use .COM extensions. You can be sure that adult site operators will most certainly snap up their .XXX equivalents (i.e., the owners of girls.com will purchase girls.xxx – or at least attempt to do so). However, they will be very reluctant to let go of their .COM domain names. This will detract from the effectiveness of .XXX.

It’s going to take awhile for .XXX to really work.
Still, the significance of .XXX names will grow in importance as new adult sites register their names to .XXX, and existing adult sites migrate away from .COM (and .other top level domains) to use .XXX exclusively. I suspect that it will take some sort of government intervention to require adult sites to use only .XXX extensions. It’s anybody’s guess when and if the government will take such action here.

It’s going to take action by private industry and the government to resolve the matter entirely.
Another solution might be for browser manufacturers to only allow users to access adult websites when a .XXX domain name is used. In other words, attempts to access websites containing adult content with web site addresses that use other top level domain extensions such as .COM or .NET, simply wouldn’t resolve. I suspect that we will need a combination of government and private solutions to solve the adult content issues to most everyone's satisfaction.

My crystal ball says they'll make a lottery for words that multiple people want to own and that they'll charge a small registration fee even if you don't get the domain you want.

I bet there's good money in that for whoever gets to collect it ;-)

That or there will be some auctioning going on, or some group of words will be kept/assigned to those invovled with the TLD.

Mindy... thanks for that link. I see that GoDaddy is excited and gearing to make a sh*tload of money with .XXX too....

Here's my 2 cents on .XXX

PROS

-- .XXX opens small avenues in protecting children... small. Such as parental services for email filters and browser add-ons.

-- .XXX identifies the domain as sexually explicit... if you don't want to see it... don't go to it. No complaints here.

-- .XXX will offer incredible type-in traffic from single word domains... (I forsee trademark legal disputes and expensive domain sales...) Let's see who has the fastest fingers... or the most inside connections.

CONS

-- .XXX allows the very possibility of unfair segregation of the adult industry to their right of free speech. Search engines, ISPs, traffic redirection, etc... which can easily block access. It clearly brands us for future acts against us.

-- .XXX hides behind the "protection of children" campaign... an intelligent conspiracy in disguise. (So does the new U.S.C. 2257 Amendments but we live here... so we need to comply to do business, whether it's fair or not.)

-- .XXX will offer more porn on the web. Not necessarily viewed as a bad thing for many adult webmasters... however doesn't help the campaign for "protection of children" which was what it was meant to do in the first place. Children will eventually look for porn, it's our duties as parents to be responsible on raising them - .XXX will only show them how to get it easier.

-- .XXX will be expensive to grease the palms of greedy individuals who have everything to gain by it. There is NO true interests in protecting children... if there were, I can think of a million other ways of doing this.

-- .XXX cannot be managed to assure that the websites are truly adult in nature.... what if someone registers religion.xxx or christianity.xxx even young.xxx More confusion, more uproar, more traffic whores, more nonsense.

-- .XXX creates the real possibility of forcing new adult site registrations to fall under this TLD... banning new .COM adult sites. Once again... branding us.

***************************

The problem is that although .XXX 'seemingly' makes sense with the 'perception' of helping to protect children from pornographic material will ONLY in fact allow dishonest and unfair lawmakers a strong leverage on controlling what happens to the industry's rights of speech and change the livelyhood of all adult webmasters.

I am generally a positive thinker and I normally look for the productive angle to everything... however I only see more CONS then PROS with this new TLD addition.

Like or not... it looks like it will be available soon and I know webmasters will be scrounging to get the best names possible maybe not realizing that it could possibly be bait to reel them in for the kill.

Only time will tell on how .XXX will affect our industry. The battle to protect our rights and freedom of speech will go on...

I simply know that I prefer not to live in FEAR (False Expectations Appear Real).... it will keep me from being as productive as I can be for today. Hoopla on topics like these can be a whirlwind of fear I wish not fall into.

Instead... I prepare today to live for tomorrow.

It's the weekend... so I will be going out to a party and having a couple of drinks... Who's with me?

Now here's an idea .. setup a fake domain registration company stating that you can pre-order xxx domains .. take a 10 dollar no refundable fee with the clause saying "we cant guarantee you will get the name, but we will keep the money anyway" lol

I wonder how many people will get skimmed on this one ..

One way they are pushing it is if we don't go with .xxx, then we are not responsible webmasters and are not thinking of the children. Just because we keep a .com and not a .xxx does not make us irresponsible. I am just afriad they are trying to push us into this so we are separated from the rest of the world. No different from making blacks use a separate restroom or not giving gays their rights. I think it is just another form of discrimination and why charge more because it is "adult". One step leads to another.......
