Sad thing is, there's a little truth to that only because if you dont fuck your customers, someone will try to do it for you unless you are COMPLETELY self contained.

I haven't tried it lately, but for instance, as of last time I tried it (been a couple or three years or more), if you sign up a completely unique email address to your own program using an iPSP, you can expect to see it get spammed within a few months.

Trade traffic with anyone? Anyone at all? You can bet either them or someone they link to is gonna fuck around with your surfer or member.

Try to find 5 completely clean honest ethical sponsors who treat your surfers as a "customer". I dare you. So if you're selling exit traffic, you're likely fucking somebody whether you know it or not.
